Chapter 131: The Second Leak

The second leak was not an accident.

That was the first and most significant difference between the two, and Nadia identified it within the opening minutes of the investigation that she and Damian initiated the moment the monitoring alert resolved into something specific enough to work with. The first leak had carried the signature of carelessness, a person who had not understood the sensitivity of the ambient information they were sharing and who had shared it through a personal connection without appreciating what that connection was connected to. The second carried no such signature. It had been executed with the deliberate precision of someone who knew exactly what they were transmitting, exactly where they were transmitting it, and exactly what the transmission would enable on the receiving end.

Someone had been placed inside the preparation team with the specific purpose of providing Selena with information at the moment the forum became the operative focus of everything surrounding it.

The identification of who took two hours and required the forensic analyst working in parallel with Damian's internal security team, cross-referencing access logs against the specific window during which the transmission had been made and narrowing the field of people with both the access and the opportunity until the field contained a single name. A logistics coordinator who had been brought into the preparation team twelve days earlier to manage the operational details of the forum attendance, scheduling, transport, session registration, the category of administrative work that required access to the practical details of the day without requiring access to the strategic content that surrounded them.

The person had access to Nadia's schedule.

That was the detail that Damian registered first when the identification was confirmed, before the operational implications of the leak itself and before the question of what Selena now knew about the counter-strategy. He looked at the access log showing the logistics coordinator's file activity and his attention went directly to the schedule document rather than to the strategic materials that sat alongside it in the same directory, and Nadia watched his attention go there with the particular quality of someone for whom the strategic implications of the leak were secondary to a different calculation entirely.

"She has my forum day schedule," Nadia said.

"The full version," Damian confirmed. "Including the revised movement plan we implemented after Eze's warning. Every session, every transition, every window in which your location changes."

The implications of that sat in the room between them with the cold precision of something that connected directly to what Eze had told them about Victor's physical plan and what that plan required to execute effectively. Victor's operatives within the service infrastructure needed to know when Nadia would be moving between locations with the reduced immediate security presence that transitions between sessions created. That information had been available to them through whatever surveillance they had been conducting of the venue in advance. Now Selena had it too, which meant whatever she was planning that ran parallel to Victor's physical threat had been calibrated with the same operational specificity.

"Two separate plans," Nadia said. "Coordinated to the same schedule without being coordinated with each other."

"Which makes the schedule itself the vulnerability," Damian said. "Rather than either plan individually."

They had been working toward the same conclusion from different angles of the same problem, which was simply how they thought now, the parallel processing of two minds that had learned each other's approach thoroughly enough to arrive at the same destination through different routes and to find each other already there.

"We change the schedule," Nadia said.

"We change all of it," Damian replied. "Every transition, every session window, every point at which your location is predictable. We rebuild the day from the current confirmed intelligence and we do not commit the revised version to any document that exists within the preparation team's access environment."

"Verbal only," Nadia said.

"To four people," Damian confirmed. "You, me, the external security lead, and the legal team's senior counsel for the moments requiring their direct presence. No administrative documentation. No digital record."

Nadia looked at the access log on the display, at the logistics coordinator's file activity mapped against the transmission timestamp, and felt the particular cold clarity of understanding a threat that had been operating inside the structure they had built to address other threats. The preparation team had been a controlled environment. They had believed it was controlled. The second leak confirmed that every controlled environment had a perimeter and that perimeters, regardless of how carefully they were constructed, had the particular vulnerability of being designed by people who could not fully anticipate every form that a deliberate breach might take.

Then she felt Damian move, and looked up to find him beside her rather than across the room where he had been standing during the analysis. He was looking at the schedule document on the display with the expression she had learned to read as the particular quality of his concern when its object was her specifically rather than the operational situation generally.

He looked at her. "Your first movement of the forum day," he said. "The transition between the opening session and the first breakout. It creates a four-minute window."

"I know," she replied.

"That window does not exist in the revised schedule," he said. It was not presented as a reassurance. It was presented as a fact he needed to state and have confirmed before the morning arrived.

"It does not exist," she confirmed.

He held her gaze for a moment with the directness of the previous night still present between them, the things said in the operations room carrying forward into this moment and making his concern legible in a way it would not have been before those things were said.

"Good," he said quietly.

The logistics coordinator had been quietly removed from the preparation team's access environment within the hour, their departure framed as an administrative reallocation that generated no visible disruption to the surface of the preparation's activity. The transmission to Selena's network could not be recalled. But what Selena had received was a schedule that would not exist by morning.

Outside, the city moved through its night. And inside the compound, two people rebuilt a day from the ground up while the opposition prepared for a version of that day that was no longer going to happen.
