Chapter 119: Selena Was Here

The third device was in the linen storage room adjacent to the main kitchen.

Not in a staff bedroom or a personal space, which would have suggested a target focused on the household staff themselves, but in a utility room that served as a thoroughfare between the kitchen and the staff quarters, a space through which the household's daily rhythms moved with the predictable regularity of a corridor that connected two high-traffic areas

Adaura documented it with the same thoroughness she had brought to the first two devices, photographs from four angles, manufacturing signature confirmation, battery type assessment. Same construction generation. Same Petro Vale contractor provenance. The three devices formed a network that had been designed to provide comprehensive coverage of the compound's daily life, operational, personal, and logistical, three layers of intelligence gathering operating simultaneously from three points that together left very little of significance outside their collective range.

The sweep team completed its work at two in the morning and Adaura delivered her preliminary findings in the briefing room with the compressed precision of someone who understood that her clients needed information rather than context at this hour. Three devices. Single network. Single installation source based on the consistency of the technical signatures. Installation window for all three devices, based on the battery cell degradation analysis she could complete in the field, fell within a range of forty-eight to seventy-two hours in the same period.

They had all been installed at the same time.

Damian looked at the installation timeline Adaura had mapped. "Eight months ago," he said.

"Give or take two weeks in either direction," Adaura confirmed.

Nadia looked at the timeline and placed it against her own memory of the past year with the methodical attention of someone cross-referencing two documents for points of correspondence. Eight months ago. She moved through the significant events of that period, the board proceedings, the proxy agreement revelations, the early stages of the governance dispute, and then further back, to what the compound had looked like during that period, who had been present within it, who had moved through its spaces with the kind of familiarity that would have allowed the installation Adaura had described.

"Selena was making regular visits to the mansion eight months ago," Nadia said.

The statement did not require elaboration for anyone in the room. The early weeks of Nadia's marriage to Damian had been characterized by Selena's presence at the compound with a frequency and ease that had communicated, to Nadia's considerable discomfort at the time, that the mansion existed in Selena's mind as a space she retained rights to regardless of who currently occupied it. She had moved through it with the proprietary confidence of someone who knew every room and expected that knowledge to be respected as a form of continued entitlement.

She had also, Nadia now understood, known every room's acoustic properties.

"The sitting room device," Nadia said to Adaura. "The positioning you described as optimal for the room's dimensions. That level of knowledge requires direct familiarity with the space."

"Correct," Adaura confirmed. "The placement is not something achievable through architectural plans or floor drawings. It requires having been in the room and understood how sound moves within it."

Damian looked at the briefing room display with the expression that acknowledged a conclusion he had been moving toward and had now arrived at completely. "She installed them herself," he said. "Or supervised their installation directly."

"During a period when her access to the compound was unrestricted," Nadia added.

The particular cruelty of that timing was not lost on either of them. The early weeks of the marriage had been characterized by a power dynamic in which Selena's comfort within the mansion had been inversely proportional to Nadia's, a dynamic that Nadia had navigated with the careful composure of someone establishing their footing in a space that did not yet fully recognize their right to it. During that same period, Selena had been using her unrestricted access not simply to assert presence but to install an intelligence infrastructure that would give her sustained visibility into the compound's private life long after her direct access was curtailed.

She had not simply been making Nadia uncomfortable. She had been working.

Nadia looked at Damian beside her and felt something move through her chest that was not quite anger, though anger was present within it. It was the particular feeling of understanding that the discomfort she had experienced during those early weeks had been deliberately manufactured as cover for something else, that every visit had served a dual purpose, the visible one of maintaining presence and the invisible one of establishing the network that had been feeding intelligence to Victor's operation for eight months.

"She had an accomplice for the installation," Adaura said, pulling Nadia's attention back to the briefing. "The sitting room device required access that Selena's visit schedule would have supported. The linen storage room device required access during a period when the household staff were present and active, which means the installation would have been visible to anyone in the adjacent kitchen unless someone within the household ensured the area was clear at the relevant time."

Nadia looked at Damian. "She did not work alone inside the compound," she said.

"Someone on the household staff managed the access window," Damian confirmed, his voice carrying the quality of someone who had been hoping this conclusion would not be the one the evidence pointed toward and had known for the past hour that it was.

Adaura set a printed sheet on the table between them. "The installation timing of the linen storage device is more precise than the other two," she said. "The positioning required the installer to work from inside the storage room with the door closed. The household access records for the installation window show three staff members in the kitchen area during that period. One of them signed out of the kitchen inventory system for a period of eighteen minutes during the window, citing a supply check of the linen storage room."

She set a second sheet alongside the first. It contained a name and a staff identification number.

Nadia read it. Then looked at Damian.

The name belonged to someone who had been part of the household since before Nadia's arrival, quiet and competent and entirely unremarkable in the way that people sometimes were when unremarkability was the quality they most needed to project. Someone who had served meals and managed the household's daily logistics and been present in the background of more conversations than either of them could now recall with the comfortable inattention that unquestioned staff presence produced.

Someone who was still here.

Damian looked at the name on the sheet for a long moment. Then he looked at Nadia with the expression of someone who had arrived at the end of a long investigative thread and found, waiting at its conclusion, not the abstraction of an unnamed enemy but the specific face of a person who had been living within their daily life.

"Tonight?" he asked quietly.

Nadia looked at the name again. At the staff ID number. At the eighteen-minute gap in the kitchen access log that had not been remarkable enough to flag until now.

"Tonight," she confirmed.
