Chapter 28: The Seven Sins
IRIS POV
I empty my gun at the entities.
Every bullet passes through them like smoke.
They don't even flinch.
"Run!" Cross shouts.
We sprint back into the warehouse. Ronan slams the door and locks it.
"That won't hold them," he gasps.
"I know." Cross is already moving to a hidden panel in the floor. She pulls it open. Stairs leading down. "Emergency bunker. Built for this exact scenario. Move!"
We descend into darkness. Cross hits a switch. Lights flicker on revealing a concrete room filled with equipment. Computers. Weapons. Research.
"You've been planning this for years," I realize.
"Five years. Since the Entity first contacted me." She locks the bunker door. Steel. Thick. "This should buy us maybe an hour."
"Then what?"
"Then they break through and we die. Unless we finish the weapon first." She pulls up the blueprints on a computer. "Margaret was close. But there's a piece missing. Something only someone who's resisted the Entity can provide."
"What piece?"
"Your blood."
I freeze. "What?"
"The weapon works by creating a frequency that disrupts soul contracts. But it needs an anchor. Blood from someone the Entity tried to corrupt but failed." She looks at me. "You're the only one who qualifies. You pulled the trigger on that child knowing it might fire. You made impossible choices without signing a contract. You resisted."
"Barely."
"Barely is enough." She holds out a syringe. "I need one vial. That's all."
I look at Ronan. "Is this real? Or is she lying?"
"I don't know. The whispers in my head are getting louder. I can't tell what's real anymore." He touches his temple. "They're promising me things. Showing me visions of the people I could save if I just accepted their power. It's so tempting."
"Fight it," I tell him.
"I'm trying."
The bunker shakes. Something heavy slamming against the door above.
"They're here," Cross says. "Decide now. Give me your blood or we all die."
I roll up my sleeve. "Do it."
She draws the blood quickly. Efficiently. Then moves to a machine that looks like something from a sci-fi movie.
"This will take twenty minutes to process. Once it's ready, I activate the weapon and every entity within a hundred miles gets trapped. Permanently."
"And everyone with soul contracts?" Ronan asks. "What happens to them?"
Cross hesitates. "The contracts break. Violently. Anyone still bound to an entity dies."
"How many people in Crimson Hollow have contracts?"
"I don't know. Maybe dozens. Maybe hundreds."
"So we're choosing to kill potentially hundreds of people to stop seven entities?" I can't believe what I'm hearing.
"We're choosing to save millions. The entities won't stop with Crimson Hollow. They'll spread. Corrupt. Destroy. This is the only way."
The door groans. Metal bending.
Fifteen minutes left.
"There has to be another way," I say.
"There isn't. I've researched for five years. This is it." Cross loads my blood into the machine. It whirs to life. "Fourteen minutes."
Ronan collapses against the wall. "The whispers are so loud now. They're showing me everyone I could save. Everyone I could help. They're saying if I just open the door, they'll spare you both. Make you powerful. Give you everything you want."
"Don't listen!"
"But what if they're right? What if power is the only way to actually fix things?" His eyes flicker black for a second. Then back to normal. "I'm losing, Iris. I can't hold on much longer."
I grab his face. Force him to look at me. "You're Ronan Ashford. You survived being the Reaper's puppet. You broke a soul contract to save me. You're stronger than any entity."
"Am I? Or am I just better at lying to myself?"
The door buckles. A crack appears.
Twelve minutes.
A voice seeps through. Not sound. Thought. Directly in our minds.
Iris Hale. Ronan Ashford. Detective Cross. We don't want to hurt you. We want to help you. The first Entity was crude. Violent. We are different. We offer partnership. Equality. Join us voluntarily and we'll save this city together.
"Don't listen," Cross says. "They're lying."
Are we? Look at your weapon. It kills innocents to stop us. How is that justice? How is that better than what we offer?
The entity has a point. Hundreds of innocent people with contracts will die.
"There has to be a way to break contracts without killing people," I say.
"There isn't. I tried. Margaret tried. The contract is bound to the soul. Break it, the soul dies."
Ten minutes.
Ronan stands up. Walks to the door.
"Ronan, no—"
"They're right. Cross's weapon kills innocents. That makes us murderers." He touches the lock. "Maybe there's a better way. Maybe if I just talk to them—"
"They'll possess you!"
"I'm already half-possessed. What's the difference?" His hand moves to unlock the door.
I tackle him. We crash to the floor.
"I'm not letting you sacrifice yourself!"
"Why not? You were willing to die for those hostages. Why can't I do the same?"
"Because I need you!" The words explode out. "Because I love you and I can't watch you become a monster!"
He freezes. "You love me?"
"Yes, you idiot! I love you even though you lied. Even though you watched my mother die. Even though you're broken and complicated and probably going to get us all killed!"
Eight minutes.
Ronan kisses me. Desperate. Fierce. Like drowning.
When we break apart, his eyes are clear. Human.
"Say it again," he whispers.
"I love you."
"Again."
"I love you."
The whispers in his head scream. I can almost hear them. Rage. Frustration.
But they're getting quieter.
"Love," Ronan says in wonder. "That's what the Entity couldn't take from me. That's why the contract never fully worked. I loved you too much. It couldn't consume that."
The machine beeps. Blood processed. Ready.
Six minutes until activation.
The door explodes inward.
The seven entities flood through. Beautiful. Terrible. Glowing with otherworldly light.
They surround us.
Touching. The detective and the broken consultant. Love conquering darkness. How very human. The lead entity—taller than the others—moves closer. But love isn't enough. It never is. Cross, activate the weapon and hundreds die. Don't activate it and we corrupt this entire city. Choose.
"I choose neither," I say.
That's not an option.
"It is now." I grab the weapon's control panel. "You said you're different from the first Entity. That you offer partnership. Prove it. Show me you're actually here to help."
How?
"Leave one person uncorrupted. One person with free will to verify you're telling the truth. If they say you're helping, I'll destroy the weapon. If they say you're lying, I activate it."
The entities consider this.
Interesting proposition. And who would this test subject be?
"Me."
"Iris, no!" Ronan grabs my arm.
"It's the only way to know for sure." I look at the entities. "Corrupt me. But leave my free will intact. Let me see what you're really offering. Then I'll decide if you're heroes or monsters."
Four minutes.
You would sacrifice yourself to save hundreds of strangers?
"I would sacrifice myself to find the truth. Do we have a deal?"
The entities confer silently.
Then the leader nods. Deal. But understand—once we enter your mind, there's no going back. You'll know everything. See everything. And that knowledge will change you forever.
"I accept."
"IRIS!" Ronan screams.
Too late.
The entity touches my forehead.
Light explodes behind my eyes.
And I see.
Everything.
The entities aren't demons. They're not evil.
They're the universe's immune system.
They target corrupt souls. Contain them. Prevent them from spreading.
The first Entity went rogue. Started corrupting instead of containing.
But these seven? They're here to fix that mistake.
And the weapon Cross built? It won't just trap entities.
It'll trap every supernatural being on Earth. Angels. Spirits. Everything.
Cross has been lying.
She's not trying to save the city.
She's trying to kill God.
I pull back from the vision. Look at Cross.
"You lied. This weapon doesn't just trap entities. It traps everything."
Cross smiles. Cold. Empty.
"Finally figured it out." She pulls out a gun. Points it at Ronan. "The entities were never the enemy. Faith was. Hope was. The idea that something bigger than us cares. I'm here to prove it doesn't. By killing every divine being at once."
Three minutes.
"You're insane!"
"I'm practical. Religion has caused more pain than any entity. Time to end it."
She shoots Ronan.
He falls.
Blood spreads across his chest.
I scream.
The weapon activates early.
Light floods the bunker.
And every supernatural being for a hundred miles starts dying.
Including the entities trying to save us.
You're all caught up
