DANTE ROMANO - POV
My fingers fly across the laptop keyboard balanced on my knees. The truck bed jolts over ruts in the logging road. Every bounce threatens to send the computer sliding into the rusted metal floor.
I don't stop typing. Can't. Marcus's encrypted files are cracking open under my intrusion programs and what I'm finding makes my stomach clench tight.
"Dante." Marco's voice filters through the rear window. Steady. Commanding. "Tell me you found something."
"Found something." I don't look up. The data streaming across my screen is too critical. Too damning. "Not sure you'll like it."
Isabella sits across from me in the truck bed. Wind whipping her hair. Those silver eyes fixed on my face. I feel her in my mind. Light touches. Careful. She's trying not to invade my thoughts but the amplifier makes subtlety impossible. Her consciousness brushes against mine like static electricity.
"The boosters." I pull up the location file. GPS coordinates scattered across the screen like stars. "Marcus hid twelve doses. Twelve locations. One per week for exactly three months."
"That's good." Luca leans over my shoulder. Squinting at the screen. "We know where they are. We can retrieve them."
"It's catastrophic." I scroll through the list. My chest getting tighter with each location. "Geneva. Tokyo. Sydney. Cairo. Moscow. Beijing. São Paulo. He scattered them across three continents. Some in active conflict zones. Others in maximum security facilities. We'd need months to retrieve them all and Isabella has twelve weeks before her brain burns out."
"We prioritize." Nico's cradling his broken arm against his chest. Pale but determined. "Grab the closest ones first. Buy time to plan the difficult extractions."
"Closest is Chicago." I pull up the details. Bank vault schematics. Security protocols. Access requirements. "Safety deposit box in First National. Three blocks from Romano headquarters."
"Too convenient." Marco's voice carries that edge. The one that means he's already three steps ahead. Seeing traps I haven't spotted yet. "Marcus knew we'd find that one first. He wanted us going there."
"Maybe he did." I keep reading. The encryption on these files is military grade. Not standard civilian security. Marcus didn't want amateurs cracking this. "But it's also our only option. First dose needed within seven days or Isabella's neural tissue starts degrading."
Through the bond Isabella's fear spikes. Sharp and metallic. She's trying to contain it. Compress it. But the amplifier broadcasts everything at volume ten.
My own anxiety rises in response. Not mine. Hers. Bleeding through our connection.
"Keep digging." Marco again. Always pushing. "Find out why Marcus structured it this way."
I dive deeper. Past the surface files. Into Marcus's research logs. Personal notes. The man documented everything obsessively. Every experiment. Every calculation. Every failure.
What I find makes my hands stop moving.
"The injection wasn't Marcus's idea." I read faster. My psychological training kicking in. Analyzing patterns. Motivations. "Someone approached him six months ago. Used the code name Architect. Blackmailed him into developing the amplifier formula."
"Blackmailed him how?" Isabella's harmonic voice cuts through wind and engine noise.
I pull up the file. Pictures load. My stomach turns. "Images. Of you as a child. During the experiments. The Architect threatened to release them publicly. Said it would destroy Sarah's medical career. Ruin your mother's reputation. Marcus complied to protect you both."
"So the Architect wanted me amplified." Isabella's processing. I feel her mind working through the bond. Faster than baseline human thought. Connections forming and reforming. "For what purpose?"
"Control." I scroll through communication logs between Marcus and this Architect. All encrypted. All routed through anonymous servers that change location with every message. "The amplifier makes you powerful but dependent. Whoever controls the booster supply controls you. It's a cage. More sophisticated than Vincent's crude methods but just as effective. Maybe more so because you won't recognize the bars until it's too late."
The truck hits a pothole. Deep. My laptop launches toward the edge. Luca's hand shoots out. Catches it mid-flight.
"Can you identify the Architect?" Marco asks. "Trace the communications back to a source?"
"Working on it." My fingers resume flying. Running trace programs. Following digital breadcrumbs through layers of proxy servers and VPNs. "Whoever this is knows tradecraft. Professional level operational security. Military background or intelligence agency training. They've covered their tracks expertly."
"So we're hunting someone with enhanced knowledge, technical capability, and motivation to control Isabella." Marco's building a psychological profile. I can hear it in his voice. "That narrows the field but not enough."
I keep searching. Digging through fragments. Deleted files. Corrupted data.
Then I find the pattern.
"The communications." I'm reading timestamps. Analyzing intervals. "They follow a schedule. Every message sent at exact twelve hour intervals. Never early. Never late. That's not normal human behavior. That's programming. Or obsessive compulsion."
"Or someone with military discipline." Luca suggests.
"Maybe." I pull up metadata. "But look at the language patterns. The Architect uses contractions inconsistently. Formal phrasing mixed with casual idioms. Like two different people wrote these messages."
"Multiple people using the same code name?" Nico asks.
"Or one person with fractured identity." I flag the linguistic anomalies. My psychological expertise screaming warnings. "Someone who doesn't have a stable sense of self. Who shifts between personas."
Through the bond Isabella's fear transforms into something else. Recognition. Horror.
"What?" I look up. Meet those silver eyes. "You know who it is."
"No." But her voice shakes. Harmonics fragmenting. "I'm just remembering something Vincent said once. About sleeper programming. About creating personalities that could be activated remotely."
My blood goes cold. "The Architect personality. In Luca."
Luca stiffens beside me. "What?"
"Sophia mentioned it." Marco's voice tight. "Before everything went to hell. She said Vincent implanted secondary personalities in his test subjects. Sleeper agents that activate under specific conditions."
"I don't have a secondary personality." Luca's defensive. Scared. "I'd know. I'd feel it."
"That's the point of sleeper programming." I close the laptop. Look at my brother. Really look. Searching for signs. "You wouldn't know. The primary personality has no awareness of the secondary. Not until activation."
"You think I'm the Architect?" Luca's voice rises. "That I've been sabotaging Isabella this whole time?"
"I think Vincent was thorough." I choose my words carefully. "And I think we need to consider every possibility."
"Dante's right." Marco's voice through the window. "We can't afford assumptions. Not with Isabella's life at stake."
Isabella reaches across the truck bed. Puts her hand on Luca's knee. "Let me look. I can scan your mind now. See if there's anything hidden."
"No." Luca pulls away. "I'm not the Architect. I wouldn't hurt you. I'd never hurt you."
"Then let her check." Nico's voice is gentle. "Prove it."
Luca's jaw clenches. His hands fist. But after a long moment he nods.
Isabella's silver eyes focus. Intensify. I feel her consciousness extend through the bond. Diving into Luca's mind. Searching.
Then she gasps. Jerks back like she touched fire.
"What did you see?" Marco demands.
"Walls." Isabella's shaking. "Mental barriers I can't penetrate. They're not natural. They're constructed. Deliberately placed to hide something."
"That doesn't mean I'm the Architect." Luca's voice breaks. "Vincent could have put those there. Could have locked away memories without creating another personality."
"Or the barriers are protecting the secondary personality from detection." I say it quietly. Hating every word. "Until the right trigger activates it."
The truck bed goes silent. Just wind and engine noise. The crunch of tires on gravel.
My laptop chimes. New file decrypted.
I open it. Video file. Timestamped three days before Marcus died.
Marcus's face fills the screen. Gaunt. Exhausted. Terrified.
"Isabella." His recorded voice crackles. "If you're watching this, I'm dead. I'm sorry. For everything. The experiments. The lies. The amplifier."
On screen Marcus glances over his shoulder. Checking if he's alone.
"The Architect is someone you trust. Someone close to you. They'll use the boosters to control you unless you discover their identity first." He leans closer to the camera. Urgent. "You have three months. Twelve weeks. Use them to find the truth before the final dose."
"What happens with the final dose?" Isabella's voice barely audible.
Marcus's recorded face is grim. "The twelfth booster isn't a stabilizer. It's a trigger. It activates the Architect's endgame. Whatever that is, I don't know. But Isabella, please. Don't trust anyone. Not your mother. Not the Romano brothers. Not even yourself."
The video cuts to black.
We sit in silence. The truck bouncing. The wind cold.
Then Isabella speaks. Her harmonic voice steady despite the fear bleeding through the bond.
"The twelfth booster is in three months. That means we have twelve weeks to find the Architect, retrieve eleven doses, and figure out what the endgame is." She looks at each of us. "And we have to do it while not knowing which one of us might be the enemy."
Through the rear window Marco's voice is ice. "Then we start with Chicago. Get the first booster. Buy ourselves time."
"And if it's a trap?" Nico asks.
"Then we spring it." Marco's tone leaves no room for argument. "On our terms. With our rules."
I reopen the laptop. Pull up the Chicago bank schematics. Start planning infiltration routes.
But my eyes keep drifting to Luca. To those mental walls Isabella found. To the possibility that my brother, my protector, might be the architect of Isabella's destruction.
And worse. That he doesn't even know it.
