Chapter 124 - LUNA'S BAGGAGE
Alison.
My gamble was right! They had stayed near the vicinity. "Asher, please try and stall for as much time as possible," when I did not get an answer, just as I had suspected, I asked Mary to pass him the message through her mate. "Just trust me." that was the only reply I could offer when she asked me what my plan was. Every moment felt as if my heart was about to leap out of my chest. Since when had I become this courageous? I was driving straight back to danger even after my mate had tried to send me away to safety. Please do not let this blow up in my face.
The pack was surrounded by men in uniform when we got there. In such close proximity, I could feel the chilling air surrounding them. No wonder they worked for the king. Such an imposing presence can only come from the best of the best. Yes, I was admiring people that were probably sent to finish us off. My racing heart was quickly filled with relief when I realized I could not smell blood in the air. That means there was no fighting, right? Please say yes. Why had they come then? Had my backup plan gotten to the pack before me?
What was my backup plan, you might be wondering? Reporters! I personally invited back the very people I dreaded dealing with. I hated every second of that call, but what could I do? If Dr. Hann could use them to bar us from taking action against him, then so could we.
Mary and I were let into the pack way easier than I thought they would. Let me rephrase, they acted like we were air. Our presence was not acknowledged even in the slightest. After honking my horn several times and them acting as if they could not hear us, our car was swiftly abandoned by the side of the road.
"Alison! Wait for me dammit!" For the first time ever, I was faster than Mary. I would have loved to rub it in if we were not in a hurry. After being a werewolf her whole life, she was still slower than a newly shifted, pregnant werewolf. Was the pack usually this big? How come it was taking me forever to get to them?
"Why didn't you leave?" I heard him before I could see him. There was a huge crowd and he was smack in the center of it. "Alison! Why are you still here? I thought you left." It seems that Jeremy had not passed my message to him. Mary had to have told him, right?
His questions had everyone turning in my direction. I fought the urge to hide behind the guard that was standing in front of me. Guilt overwhelmed me. I could hear the murmurs erupting as soon as I was spotted.
"The Luna is back."
"I knew she could not just leave us like that..."
"Why is she back? Alpha Asher took a lot of risks sending her away."
"Will there be a fight now?"
The last question resulted in an unsettling silence. Where was the anger? I was expecting them to blow up in my face for running away like a coward. "Luna, I think you should go back." Their voices were filled with concern for me instead. This love I am feeling right now had to be payment for all the suffering I have been through in the past, right? The person that claimed to love me the most ended up being the one that caused me the most pain, whereas my supposed haters wanted the best for me.
"NO ONE IS LEAVING!" When I tell you I almost jumped out of my skin, then you better believe it. And I thought Asher sounded scary when angry. "Alpha Asher, I will not ask again. Will you come with us willingly or not? Do not b..."
"Did you guys start the party without us?" Those words were almost similar to the ones that I dreaded hearing a few days ago, suddenly they felt like music to my ears. My backup had finally arrived. At that moment, nothing sounded more beautiful than the camera shutter sounds. I smiled at every flash of the lights. "Lovely viewers, welcome back Thompson Springs."
No one had expected the reporters to show up again. I called them earlier when Mary was settling down the kids. I almost cried when I realized they weren't that far from the pack. They were people that loved chasing the next big thing, so it was not too hard to convince them to show up.
"Why are you here? This is not a place for your kind!" The obvious disgust for humans could not be hidden. All the guards' faces had an expression I knew all too well.
"My kind? Do you mean humans? After you guys killed so many humans, you expect us to just leave you be? That is impossible." It was the man that had put Asher on the spot last time. After wishing I could rearrange his facial features last time, this time I wanted to praise his sharp tongue.
"What is your name?"
"I am Milton from the..."
Just as I was wondering why he was asking for his name, I got an answer. "I, Daniel of the King's Guard, reject you, Milton, as my mate." I watched in sympathy as the reporter doubled over. Mary told me that rejection was painful for both mates, but why did it seem as if Daniel felt nothing? Poor human.
Felling bad for Milton, I walked over to him to teach him how to accept it. "I, Milton, accept your rejection." No, he did not need my help. He barely managed to get his words. Just how much research had they done on werewolves? His colleagues looked at him with pity.
"I would prefer it if you did not try to interfere with my work. Asher, do not keep your majesty waiting." Daniel did not even turn to look at Milton as some of his colleagues tried to carry him away. What an asshole, weren't mates supposed to be everything for werewolves? How could he easily reject him like that? Was it because he was human or because he was male?
"Guards! Get him!" It was Asher's turn to act like Dr. Hann, at the top of his lungs, he shouted that the king was trying to silence him, yet he was the one that was working with the doctor. It wasn't just me that could not bear to see the strong Alpha act like this, I could see almost all the pack members facing away from the scene. He was giving Dr. Hann a run for his money.
Soon there were growls all over the pack. I don't think the guards thought Asher would say something like that, judging from the comical look on their faces. "Treason! The king would never do such a thing!" Several voices bellowed at the same time. Taking everyone aback.
"You work for him! Of course, you would speak up on his behalf. Why would he send hundreds of you here if he was not trying to silence me?" Asher raised his voice even louder.
"Daniel, are you under your king's orders to silence Asher?" I marveled at Milton's strength! He still had the energy to shove a microphone in his ex-mate's face.
"No one said anything about si..." Daniel did not get to finish his statement as the group of reporters broke into whispers.
"Is this your so-called king?" A phone soon appeared beside the microphone. I could not read the screen from where I stood, but when he pressed play everyone could hear what was said.
Some had leaked a recording of Dr. Hann's secret meeting with a man I presumed to be the king. Let us just say they were both fuvked.
