Chapter 26 The escape
Chapter 26 The escape
Adewale's grip on Lia's hand was like a vice as he pulled her through the labyrinthine streets of Lagos, the city's soundscape a blur of horns, laughter, and distant sirens. Liam was close behind, his eyes scanning the shadows for threats.
"We need to get you to a safe house, Lia," Adewale said, his voice low and urgent.
Lia's mind was racing, her heart still pounding from the adrenaline. "What about you, Adewale? You're in danger too."
Adewale's expression was grim, his eyes filled with a mix of regret and determination. "I'll be fine. I've made arrangements."
They ducked into a narrow alley, the air thick with the scent of cooking oil and garbage. Ifeoma waited by a battered old Peugeot, her eyes darting nervously up and down the street.
"Get in," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The drive was a tense, winding journey through Lagos' backstreets. Lia's phone buzzed – a message from an unknown number: "They'll find you. You can't hide."
Lia's gaze met Liam's, a silent understanding passing between them. They were running out of options.
The safe house was a nondescript bungalow in a quiet neighborhood, the walls adorned with vibrant murals and the air thick with the scent of incense. Adewale led them inside, his expression serious.
"Lia, I need to tell you something. Something about your past, about the Smiths."
Lia's heart skipped a beat, her mind racing. What secrets was she about to uncover?
Adewale took a deep breath, his eyes locked onto hers. "Lia, you're not who you think you are."
The room fell silent, the tension palpable. Lia's future hung in the balance.
Adewale's words hung in the air like a challenge, making Lia's heart skip a beat. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice firm despite the tremble in her hands.
Adewale's eyes were pools of regret, his voice low and measured. "Lia, your mother...she wasn't who you thought she was. She was part of a powerful organization, one that wanted the Smiths' empire."
Lia's mind was a whirlwind of questions, but Liam's steady voice cut through the noise. "What organization?"
Adewale hesitated, glancing at Ifeoma, who nodded almost imperceptibly. "The Elysium Group. They're global, with roots in tech and finance. They wanted the Smiths' tech innovations to corner the market on AI."
Lia's thoughts were a jigsaw puzzle falling into place. "So...I'm part of this?" She asked curiously with a slight mix of fear.
Adewale's expression was a mix of sorrow and pride. "You're the key, Lia. You have access to the Smiths' tech. Elysium wants you to unlock it."
The room fell silent, the only sound the hum of the city's nightlife outside. Lia's gaze met Liam's, a silent understanding passing between them – they needed to take control.
Suddenly, Adewale's phone buzzed. He glanced at it, his face darkening. "They're here."
The air thickened with tension. Ifeoma moved swiftly, pulling out a small bag. "We need to move. Now."
Lia's heart was racing, her mind clear. "Where to?"
Adewale's eyes locked onto hers. "Somewhere safe. Where Elysium can't touch you."
The night was alive with danger, the city a maze of secrets. Lia's future hung in the balance, her past a ticking time.
The night air was thick with tension as Adewale led them through Lagos' backstreets, the sounds of the city fading into the distance. Ifeoma navigated the winding roads with ease, her eyes scanning the mirrors for tails.
Lia's mind was racing, her heart still pounding from the revelation. "Where are we going, Adewale?"
Adewale's expression was grim, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "A place Elysium doesn't know about. A tech hub, hidden in the city."
Liam's voice was low, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "How secure is it?"
Adewale's smile was tight. "It's Fort Knox, Liam. You'll see."
The car pulled into a nondescript garage, the doors sliding shut behind them. Ifeoma led them to a hidden elevator, the doors opening with a hiss.
The tech hub was a marvel, rows of screens and servers humming in the dim light. A figure stepped forward, his eyes warm behind wire-rimmed glasses.
"Welcome, Lia. I'm Dr. Patel. We'll keep you safe here."
Lia's gaze narrowed, her voice firm. "What do you know?"
Dr. Patel's smile was gentle. "Enough. Adewale's been working with us to bring down Elysium. We have a plan."
Adewale's eyes locked onto Lia's, a mix of determination and apology. "We need you to trust us, Lia. Can you do that?"
Lia's heart skipped a beat, her mind clear. She glanced at Liam, who nodded almost imperceptibly.
"Okay," she said, her voice firm. "I'm in."
The room fell silent, the tension palpable. The plan was set in motion, but Lia's past was still a wild card.
