Chapter 117
Is this the end?
Scarlett's POV.
No, no, no... I should have trusted that guy feeling when I felt it. I shouldn't have gone this way, I should have taken some other direction. My heart thudded in my chest like a drum as the rain rang in my ears. The storm has only gotten was rise and the fields had become water logged. It was so uncomfortable to trek through the water on bare feet, but once again, having a choice wasn't in the books for me.
I turned back again, and to my greatest horror, the warriors were closing in on me. I could see Rush clearly now and they were heading my way. I still couldn't figure out why but something told me the answer was coming very soon.
"I just need to go a little further..." I murmured, maybe I could find a place to hide as they fought, then somehow slink my way into the landscape of the forest. The forest itself looked like it was waiting to have me in its clutches and I swallowed, not knowing if that was a good or a bad thing. The ground rumbled again, this time in a different kind of way that sent more than chills down my spine, and it had nothing to do with the cold.
"Come on Scarlett... Just a little further," I willed myself to move forward, because I didn't like those chills, and I hated even more they it was where I was heading to that was making me feel that way. The ground rumbled beneath me, and this time it was much closer. Far closer than I had been hearing and I almost stopped in my tracks.
"What is that?" I asked absentmindedly and the ground rumbling answered in response. Rumbling?... Oh moon goddess.
I turned back, Rush and his crew were approaching rapidly while all I could do was move at a snail's pace. If what I was thinking was right, then Alpha Richard and Beta Ben were with him as well. The only possible reason for him to be heading this way too was that this was way the battle would take place, and that meant I would be at the centre of it because the only possible place where Derek and his own warriors would come from was the forest that was straight ahead of us. I would would be caught right in the middle of them. I was screwed.
I paid closer attention to the rumblings because now I knew they weren't rumblings at all. I listened carefully as I advanced forward, and like I had thought, they weren't rumblings. Footsteps. Heavy footsteps, multiple of them were heading my way- Rush's way - and they were also advancing pretty fast.
My breathing picked up a itch and I chastised myself because this wasn't the time for me to be hyperventilating. I would not die here today, I told myself, steeling my expression as I pressed on. I would make it. I had to.
"Isn't that the Omega that's supposed to receive the whippings?" Someone called and I thought I would faint. They were close enough that I could hear their voices now, and what was even worse was that they had identified me. Would they kill me on the spot?
"Are you sure? Isn't she supposed to be in her cell in the dungeon area or something?" Another one replied and I heard their murmurs pass around. I wondered if anyone had notified Rush that I was out in the open and actively trying to to run away. Again.
"It has to be her. What Omega would be walking around in the rain with a back that looks like a slab of meat? No Omega would be that desperate except for her. Remember, she has run away before, it's nothing new to her."
"Hmm, that makes sense. Maybe she heard about the war between us and her precious mate's pack so she decided to take this opportunity to go to him."
"It's really stupid of her if you ask me because look at her, she looks like she's going to drop dead any minute now from sheer exhaustion alone and she thought to venture out in this horrible weather in her condition? And to top it off we are having a battle and any one of us could think she was the enemy and kill her. She definitely hasn't thought this one through."
"She is the enemy. She started being one the day she abandoned the pack and left for those rogue's pack. Besides, what do we care about her anyway? She just an Omega whose knocking on death's door as it is."
Their words rang in my ears and it was like I was working in the kitchen cleaning spilled oil all over again. Their words didn't matter now even though they affected me in the same way.
"Hey, she's been reported to the Alpha heir, and he wants her to be caught!" A warrior yelled and I stilled for a moment.
"Ah, really? What for, she's basically useless."
"He's right you know. I could fire an arrow at her right now and we can all call it a day." An arrow? I could already feel where he would aim for and I loked around for some form of shade or cover. I didn't want to dire like that. Would Rush really be that cruel?
"No, that's not happening. The Alpha heir said he wants her alive, I suspect he's saving her to do the honors himself. The poor Alpha has been through so much with her already, so nobody touch whr out of respect for him. All you have to do is catch her. If she dies in your arms do be it but do not attack her in anyway. Am I being clear?" The warrior called out and I felt all the blood drain away from me.
"Yes Sir!" The others chorused. How generous of them to save my murder for who they thought deserved it most. I couldn't think much on anything because time was running out. Rush had spotted me and had basically declared to his warriors that he wanted me dead but that all they had to do was catch me because he wanted to do the killing himself. Or at least that was what the warrior thought he wanted.
Ahead of me, those multitude of footsteps coming from the forest had breached the forest line and I could see the warriors coming at us- Rush's way, full speed.
Oh Moon goddess, they had their swords raised. One swing from it and that would be the end for me. Is this the end?
I stared at the cloudy sky and wondered why my own prayers were never answered. Did the moon goddess really hate me that much? Was they why I was moments away from dying like a nobody on a bloody battle field? Alone too, and with nobody who cared about me.
I sniffled from more than just the cold because my heart ached. It ached so bad and what was worse was that I couldn't even stop to cry it all out. I had to keep pushing forward if I still thought about surviving, not minding that the chances were getting slimmer and slimmer the closer the warriors approached.
The warriors that breached the forest line were more than I thought they would be as they came in numbers I could not count. And that was when I spotted Derek in their mist, looking as wonderful as I remembered while I looked like a hag who witch had cursed.
I wanted to close my eyes but I forced them to remain open as I watched him and his warriors advance, Beta Raymond at his side as they pressed forward. I sucked in a breath, tasting the cold air as the warriors closed the last stretch of distance between us. I fully expected to any of them to swing their swords at me, disregarding the orders given to them and make me meet my end. But something else happened that shocked me.
They passed right by me and headed straight for Derek and his warriors and that was how the battle began. They shouted their battle cries, and started trying to cut down the enemies in their path.
At that moment, Derek spotted me and it felt like the world had stopped and that the only two people in it where him and me. Our eyes met and all the feelings I had thought were locked right away same pushing forward.
