Chapter 300
Chapter 300
The crowd erupted in cheers.
"Marry him!"
"Marry him!"
"Marry him!"
Kelvin pulled out the ring he had prepared.
"I do." Adeline said, slowly extending her left hand.
The wedding concluded flawlessly. Knowing the temperament of the Miller family elders, Howard whisked Chloe away on an overseas trip, seeking some peace and quiet.
Meanwhile, Griffin was charged with attempted kidnapping by incitement. Sawyer was quickly informed, but the Martinez family acted as if nothing had happened, with no one making an appearance.
It was Remy, surprisingly, who visited Griffin in the detention center.
"Ms. Jenkins? Have you come to your senses?" Griffin stared at the unexpected visitor, a mocking smile on his face.
"Could I ask you to..."
Before Remy could finish, Griffin cut her off. "You've missed your chance, Ms. Jenkins. You will never know where your biological daughter is!"
"Griffin! I'm begging you!" The ever-proud Remy was now reduced to pleading.
Griffin looked at her, amused. "So, are you willing to sign that contract, Ms. Jenkins?"
"If you tell me where my daughter is, I can hire the best lawyer for you."
At her words, Griffin laughed even harder. "A lawyer? Are you joking, Ms. Jenkins? Don't forget, I am the sole grandson of the Martinez family. Do you really think I need your help getting out of here?"
"You are not the Griffin!" Remy stared at him intently. "So, I am the only one you can rely on."
"Remy, what do you mean?"
"Don't you find it strange that you've been in this detention center for so long, and Mr. Sawyer Martinez hasn't visited you once?"
Griffin's eyes gradually turned sinister. "So, it was Howard's doing, wasn't it?"
Remy shook her head. "It was Mr. Sawyer Martinez. He has already arranged for someone to handle the transition of power at the Martinez Group. So, right now, I am your only hope."
Hearing Remy's words, Griffin finally slid to the floor, defeated.
On a breezy, sun-kissed island, Chloe and Howard strolled hand-in-hand along the beach. The water lapped gently at their feet, a soft, caressing touch.
"Chloe." Howard stopped, his gaze dropping as he wrapped his arms tightly around her waist.
"What is it?" Chloe looked at him, puzzled.
The next second, Howard's lips descended upon hers.
"There are so many people here!" Chloe whispered shyly.
Howard, however, was unconcerned. He nibbled gently on her ear. "Chloe, we are a legally married couple now."
He said this almost every time they made love. Chloe's ears were practically calloused from hearing it.
"Even a legally married couple can't... out here." Chloe pleaded softly.
Howard's lips were already tracing a path down her neck.
"Then we'll go back to the hotel." he said, sweeping her up into his arms.
"Howard!" Chloe tried to say more, but the feeling of her feet leaving the ground made her panic, and she clung tightly to his neck.
On the soft bed of their hotel room, Howard leaned down, pressing his body against hers. "Chloe." He whispered her name into her ear.
"Howard." She whispered back.
It was as if all the unpleasantness they had endured before this moment had finally been released. The island breeze was gentle and soothing.
Howard and Chloe's trip lasted for over a month. If it weren't for Teddy's incessant calls urging him to return to handle company affairs, Howard might have forgotten he was still the CEO of the Miller Group.
On their last day on the island, they sat by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the sea, enjoying their final breakfast. It included Chloe's favorite strawberry cake.
Strangely, as she stared at the small, delicate cake, a wave of nausea churned in her stomach.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Howard asked anxiously, patting her back.
Chloe shook her head. "My appetite has just been off these past few days. It's as if..." Suddenly, a thought occurred to her, but it seemed so absurd that she shook her head again. "It's nothing." The doctor had already told her it would be very difficult for her to conceive again. It was probably just the change in environment.
"Rest for a while. We still have a few hours before we have to leave." Howard said, gently lifting her and placing her on the soft bed.
"Howard, where are you going?" Chloe asked as he prepared to leave.
"I'm going to the beach to collect some shells. Didn't you say you liked the shells here?" He gently stroked her forehead. "Be good. I'll be back soon."
Reassured, Chloe lay back down on the bed. She dozed off and didn't know how long she slept, but when she opened her eyes again, it was three in the afternoon.
"You're awake?"
"Yes." Chloe, still half-asleep, rested her head on Howard's shoulder.
He gently draped a jacket over her. "Come on, we have to go."
Four hours later, the plane landed smoothly in Riverton. The nausea in Chloe's stomach had only intensified. Howard changed their plans and took her straight to the hospital.
"Congratulations, Mr. Miller." the doctor said after a thorough examination.
Howard was momentarily stunned. "What do you mean?"
"It means you're going to be a father! However, Mrs. Miller's pregnancy is not very stable at the moment. She needs to rest."
"Chloe, did you hear that?" Howard turned to her, overcome with emotion.
"Are you sure you're not mistaken? Didn't you say my body..." Chloe looked at the doctor in disbelief.
"Ordinarily, with Mrs. Miller's physical condition, getting pregnant again would indeed be very difficult. But Mrs. Miller is very lucky. Congratulations."
Hearing the doctor's explanation, Chloe's nose tingled, and two lines of tears rolled down her cheeks. "So, my baby came back?" she asked, her eyes blurred with tears as she looked at Howard.
"Yes! Chloe, we're having a baby!" Howard gently pulled her into his embrace, holding her as if she were a priceless piece of porcelain.
Chloe placed her hands on her lower abdomen and whispered to herself, "Baby, Mommy will protect you this time."
"Chloe, there's one more thing. I think you have the right to know." Howard said, looking down at her gently.
"What?" Chloe looked at him, confused.
"Karen is not your biological mother." Howard said slowly.
Chloe froze, not quite processing his words.
"Back then, out of jealousy, she swapped her own child with Ms. Jenkins's." Howard watched her nervously, afraid that any emotional distress might harm the baby. He had only learned of Chloe's true parentage a few hours ago, but this time, he was unwilling to hide it from her.
"After Ms. Jenkins and Mr. Brown separated, she was already pregnant with his child." Howard explained slowly.
"So," Chloe looked at Howard, "not only do I have my baby, but I also have a mother?"
"And you have me." Howard said, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.
