Chapter 57 Eric's frustrated feelings
Lilac looked around at Eric and his friends now that the backyard was cleared out. Why was he here, anyways? She wanted to ask, but dropped her curiosity.
“Come in for a bit. It a big house with many rooms. Tomorrow you can go back,” Eric said and she looked at him suspiciously. Then she paused. She decided to wait a bit before leaving.
“Fine. I will wait a bit before leaving," she said, then turned around and walked inside. Seeing her enter, Eric sighed in relief. He gave Mark a look and he nodded and walked into the living room and transferred a lot of black boxes into one of the rooms. Lilac did not bother to ask what the boxes were and took a seat in the living room.
“What will you drink?” Eric asked. A few packs of drinks and supplies sat on the table.
“They are not cold though, we just arrived. We did not get the chance to put them away,” Eric said.
“Is a drink how you reward me? Don't you think you will have to do better than that?” Lilac asked.
“A reward? Why would I need to reward my wife for defending me?” he asked cheekily and took a sit beside her, but Lilac was not used to seeing this cheekily look on him.
“Oh? I had heard there was a plot against you before we left the hotel to go shopping, but it…” she wanted to say she thought it was not her business, but she knew it would not support her claims, so she cleared her throat and reconstructed her words, “I had heard rumors and did not understand much about it then. Today I went shopping and heard them talking again, and came to save you out of the goodness of my heart,” she said.
“Really? It is not that you felt that it was none of your business? But came to save your reputation and watch the fun too?” he asked and she looked away.
Eric found her expression cute for some reason, he could not look away. Before she could continue shaming herself, she heard her phone ring. She was grateful for the interruption.
“Cindy…” she began to say the moment the phone touched her ears.
“Lilac! You are married Eric Black?” Ethel’s voice rang through the phone and entered the ears of those around.
“What are you saying? Ethel, have rumors already spread?!” Lilac asked instantly. She looked as though she was red to deny it, and this some what irritated Eric.
“What rumor? The entire company forum is full of videos of you defending Eric with you poisonous tongue!” Ethel shouted.
“Okay, I can explain,” she started to say. Feeling that she was still so adamant in not being related to him, Eric could not sit still. He walked over to the fridge and placed the supplies they had brought in.
“What is there to explain? You were so powerful flogging that crying secretary with your poisonous mouth, you did not even spare her corpse,” Cindy seemed to have grabbed the phone to reply. Her voice rand out so loud, the others in the room raised brow.
“I have found that sister in law’s friends have been infected by her way of talking,” Mark who had just stepped out of the room said to Ethan.
“I will explain later when I am back…” Lilac started to explain.
“We saw the video. Those friends of his, called you their sister in law. What is there to deny? Everyone knew before we did!” Cindy scolded.
“There are many reason…” Lilac started to say. Just then Eric leaned in and dropped a bottle of water by her side.
“Have some water, it’s cold,” he said, his words close enough to be caught by those on the other side of the phone.
“You sneaky child, is he there?” Ethel seemed to tease. Lilac sent Eric a dirty look as he withdrew, then proceeded to leave the room. She walked around opening a random door to a bedroom and closing it behind her.
Seeing her leave, Eric’s irritation grew. Mark and Ethan saw his dirty tactic and sent him a knowing look. It was only a few days ago he denied having anything to do with her, now he did not like her separating them.
“Have you set up?” Eric asked and they nodded. We first have to make sure that he comes home today, didn’t the private detective say he was in the city?
“Those people distracted us, we don’t know if he is back yet. We only need to to get him on video.” Ethan said.
“My aunt is soft hearted. She is the kind of person what will take him back if he begs enough, just set up a camera on the streets and we will take turns watching or when he come in. maybe he hasn’t returned yet,” Eric said, then walked towards The room Lilac had entered. He paused by the door, before knocking. He noticed she was still on the phone when she opened the door. He entered nd stood by the corner, letting her finish her conversation, but she could not continue talking with him in the room, so she ended the call and looked his way.
“I should get going,” she said to him and he panicked slightly.
“Why? It is already dark. I will take you back tomorrow,” he said but she shook her head.
“Are you afraid I will do something to you?” he blocked her way. His irritation was growing. He was feeling restless and did not know how to let it out.
“No.” she said, “I just don't have any reason to be here,”
“But it is safer for you to be returning at this time of the night? And don't think I will not mention how you ditched your guards,” he said, showing her the time on his phone. It was past ten pm at night.
“I will take you back tomorrow. I would take you back now, but I am slightly busy,” he said and she relented. Seeing that she had let it go, he was relieved.
“What are you all doing here, anyway?” she asked, she had been curious for so long.
“Catching a cheater. What to join?” he asked.
“A cheater?” she asked.
“Didnct you tip me before? Would you like to join?” he asked. In truth, he was not sure why he was asking her to join. He was just uncomfortable with her being so far away.
“A cheater? Your uncle in-law? I didn’t know you were that bored,” she said and walked out the door with him. When they stepped into the living room, Mark and Ethan were no where to be seen.
“Where are they?” Lilac asked.
“They went to set up surveillance outside our rental on the street.” he answered as they sat.
“That serious?” she asked, “What kind of cheater needs this much drama? Just kick down the door.”
“My Aunt’s husband will deny everything without evidence,” he answered, “Do you think it was easy to track him down? Everything about his affair was cleaned up well. If you had not given me the mistress' name, how would we even get this close?” he asked and she nodded in response. True, people in his family were just that extreme.
“Since you gave me a name it was much easier, so I had asked Mark to look into it. His findings showed it was true, but we could not get a clear picture of the woman in question. It makes me wonder how you saw her,” he explained and she suddenly understood his odd actions that day.
“That time I was...”Lilac started to say, but hesitated. He was already suspicious of her sources of information. For some reason, Lilac was sure his suspicion kept Eric on his toes about her. Lilac knew she had no leverage in this marriage and wanted to have at least something.
“If you don't want to tell me, it's fine,” he nodded, "We found that he was renting a house next door for his mistress. If we could just get some pictures or videos, it would be fine,”
“My aunt is quite soft hearted, so ot will not be her that handles it. It will probably be my father. From what the private dictective we hired said, his mistress seems ot be pregnant,” he said.
“It couldn’t be the woman I saw when I came, right?” Lilac asked and he sat up straight.
“What woman?” he asked.
“When I arrived, some paranoid woman got in my face asking why I was following her. She seemed pregnant and familiar, but it was too dark a nd I was not paying attention,” Lilac said.
“Familiar? Then she must be the one,” she heard Mark who had just returned with Ethan say the moment they walked into the living room.
“You think?” Lilac asked.
“The mistress, Professor Mandy James was your professor, of course she would seem familiar in the dark. Her Philosophy course is taken by almost all first years in your university, right?” Ethan asked and Lilac nodded. She could not believe it was actually confirmed that the professor was a mistress. She always heard of such scandals, but never had it happened close enough in her sphere to spectate.
“Then, why don’t we go and have a peek?” Lilac asked and they all looked her her way.
