Chapter 161 The Real Enemy
Chapter 161 The Real Enemy
Amelia POV
The silence in the safe house stretched uncomfortably long. I sat back in my chair, processing what we'd just witnessed—the systematic corruption of legitimate research into something monstrous.
Pilot ejected the memory card. "Thirty-seven researchers. All dead because they tried to do the right thing."
"And how many more facilities are still operating?" I muttered, already dreading the answer.
We worked in tense silence, transferring the video files to encrypted drives while printing every document and photograph we'd captured. As the printer finished, Pilot and I spread the evidence across every available surface—photographs and documents that revealed a nightmare masquerading as scientific breakthrough.
"Look at this timeline," I said, arranging the photos chronologically. "The facility was operational for at least six months before the incident. That's sustained research, not a quick experiment."
Pilot examined a photograph of the Awakened Order insignia on research notes. "You think there are others?"
"Has to be." I pulled up a map on my laptop. "Think about it. Cain wouldn't put all his eggs in one basket. Distributed research sites, minimal communication between them. If one gets compromised..."
"The others continue operating." Pilot's expression darkened. "Smart bastard."
The flight back to Everdark City gave me hours to piece together the puzzle. Cain's strategy was brilliant in its simplicity—use the promise of immortality to recruit legitimate research organizations, then slowly corrupt their work toward weapon development. Most partners probably never realized they were creating bioweapons.
Jason was waiting at the private airfield, looking pale but determined. His ribs were still healing, but he'd insisted on leaving the hospital early.
"How bad is it?" he asked as we transferred the evidence to a secure FSOD vehicle.
"Worse than we thought," I replied, sliding into the passenger seat. "This isn't just about revenge or terrorism. Cain's building an entire network."
At FSOD headquarters, we established a secure conference room. I laid out the photographs while Pilot connected the recovered camera to Jason's laptop.
"Myanmar facility was operational for months," I began. "Multiple test subjects, all showing Joker-like mutations. The research team thought they were developing longevity treatments—they had no idea they were weaponizing a virus."
Jason studied the images of the specimen tanks. "These mutations... they're more advanced than what we saw in Joker."
"Exactly. This represents years of refinement. Generation after generation of the virus, each iteration more stable than the last."
Pilot activated the camera footage. "Watch this researcher's statement from day eighty-four."
The grainy video showed a haggard scientist addressing the camera. Jason's expression shifted to the same grim realization I'd felt when first watching this footage.
"The promise of eternal life," I murmured. "Who wouldn't be tempted?"
Jason leaned back in his chair. "Immortality... it's humanity's oldest dream. Every culture, every religion has some version of it."
"And Cain exploited that desire." I pulled up a world map on the wall monitor. "I'm betting there are similar facilities across multiple continents. Research teams who genuinely believe they're close to conquering death."
"Until they discover the truth," Pilot added grimly.
I pointed to different regions on the map. "Independent cells. That explains why the Myanmar facility stayed abandoned for so long. These sites only communicate with Awakened Order at long intervals, so Cain might not even know this facility had an incident."
Jason nodded slowly. "So how do we flush him out?"
I smiled. "We make him panic. Force him to defend his operation."
"Which is?"
"Here's the plan. We release all the Myanmar photographs to international media, but we don't mention Awakened Order involvement. We present it as an isolated incident: a research facility pursuing immortality that suffered a viral outbreak."
"That's it?" Pilot asked.
"Think it through. If some of Cain's partner organizations are still in the dark about the true nature of their research, this news will terrify them. They'll demand explanations, guarantees that their own projects are safe."
Jason's eyes lit up with understanding. "Cain will have to hold emergency meetings."
"Exactly. He will have no choice but to call his partner organizations for an emergency meeting to explain the situation. That's when we infiltrate and confront him directly at his own clarification session."
The plan moved swiftly into action. Jason coordinated with FSOD media liaisons while I contacted Round Table operatives, but we held off on the actual release. First, we needed to be in position.
Two weeks later, we were on a transport plane to Zone Omega. I'd brought Pilot, Muse, and Maria—enough firepower for the mission but not so many that we'd attract attention during infiltration. Jason had assembled several FSOD agents including Sebastian to accompany us.
The extended preparation time had been necessary—coordinating with multiple agencies, securing equipment, and establishing secure communications channels, and allowing Jason's injuries to heal completely. Fortunately, during these two weeks, Cain had remained inactive.
Once we established our safe house and surveillance positions, Jason gave the signal to the media contacts.
Within hours, major news networks were running stories about the "Myanmar Immortality Disaster."
We spent the next forty-eight hours monitoring communications and tracking movement patterns across Zone Omega. The bait had been taken.
"Intel confirms unusual activity in Awakened Order territory," Maria reported from her laptop. "Multiple private jets arriving from Asia, Europe, North America. High-level executives from pharmaceutical companies, research institutes. And several organizations here are also sending representatives to Cain's compound."
"Cain's calling in his partners," I confirmed. "Damage control time."
Muse looked up from cleaning his tactical gear. "When do we move?"
"Tomorrow afternoon," I said, checking the intelligence I'd gathered. "Cain is calling an assembly at 2 PM. What they're publicly calling a scientific symposium." I pulled up building schematics on my tablet. "Four of us—myself, Maria, Pilot, and Jason—infiltrate through the ventilation system. Muse and Sebastian maintain overwatch from the perimeter."
"HVAC access point here," Jason indicated on the blueprints. "Leads directly to the main conference hall. We'll have audio and visual on whatever Cain tells his partners."
"And if things go sideways?" Pilot asked.
"Then we improvise."
We spent the evening at a safe house, reviewing entry routes and extraction plans. The operation felt straightforward—get inside, record Cain's admission of guilt, transmit evidence to authorities worldwide, and bring him to justice.
The next afternoon, our team reached the designated position outside Awakened Order headquarters. I was making final adjustments to my tactical harness when my phone buzzed.
Unknown number, encrypted message: [Professor was the real architect of Black Friday. Everything you think you know about Round Table's involvement is a lie. Cain is a puppet. The real enemy has been hiding in plain sight all along. - Accountant]
