Chapter 16: CH-16
Dante POV
The secret chamber beneath the Volkov estate feels like stepping into the belly of a beast—alive, breathing, and hungry. The walls, slick with centuries-old dampness, hold the scent of mildew, iron, and something sweeter—incense burning thick in the corners. Shadows creep like feral creatures, licking the edges of the torchlight, coiling into sinister shapes that dance as if mocking the living.
Selene stands at the center, a vision of midnight power. She looks untouchable—more goddess than woman—with her raven-black hair cascading over a dress the color of a blood moon. In her hand, she holds a dagger, the blade kissed with an inky black liquid that glistens like oil under firelight. It’s not just poison. It feels… alive.
Behind her, Veritas kneels, a soldier in body but a wolf in spirit—watching her every move with unnerving devotion. His voice slices through the silence like a blade on bone.
“You saw what she did,” Veritas mutters, his tone coiled with frustration. “Aria hesitated.”
Selene’s smile spreads slowly, like venom soaking into a wound. It’s beautiful and horrifying all at once.
“She still bleeds De Luca,” Selene whispers, as though tasting the words. “But so did Isabella once. And look how easily she shattered.”
She turns to the altar before her—a slab of ancient stone, etched with archaic symbols that seem to shift under the flicker of flame. With deliberate care, Selene presses the dagger to the altar’s surface, dipping the blade in the black liquid and etching a twisting sigil.
The fluid writhes like a living serpent, its oily sheen catching the torchlight.
“Blood will bind them,” she intones, her voice echoing with a timbre that doesn’t belong to this world.
Then, without flinching, she drags the dagger across her palm.
Crimson wells up, sliding over her skin, mingling with the black ink as it drips onto the altar. The sigil pulses like a heartbeat, shadows rippling outward as though the room itself breathes in response.
“And blood will end them.”
A shiver runs through me. Watching her from afar, hidden under the heavy cloak of pines that shield the Volkov estate, I feel a coldness that no weapon can fight. I’ve faced killers, monsters with human skin, but this… this is different.
Selene isn’t just waging war with bullets and blades—she’s twisting something older, darker. Something that doesn’t play by the rules of this world.
The intercepted message burns in my pocket: a warning, a curse, and a promise all at once. Isabella is walking into a trap she doesn’t yet see, and if I don’t act, the price will be her blood.
I wipe sweat from my brow, my grip tightening on the rifle slung across my back. I’ve fought for a lot of things—power, loyalty, vengeance—but this fight is different. This war is no longer about territory or pride. It’s about survival. About family.
And I’ll burn this entire city before I let Selene lay her hands on Isabella.
\-========================
Back at the safehouse, the tension coils tighter with every second that ticks by. Isabella paces like a caged predator, sharp and beautiful and lethal, her dark hair falling into her face as she clenches and unclenches her fists. On the table, the velvet box lies open, the bloodstained coin inside catching the low lamplight like a mocking eye.
She can’t stop staring at it. That coin is a message, a threat, and a memory all at once.
Luciana stands in the corner, leaning against the wall, her expression shadowed by worry. There’s something maternal in her gaze, but it’s laced with steel.
“Selene’s moves aren’t random,” Luciana says, breaking the silence.
“She’s weaving a game we can’t fully see yet—blood magic, fear, alliances that rot from the inside. She’s not just fighting. She’s corrupting.”
“I know.” Isabella’s voice is sharp, but it wavers for just a second. Her fingers curl against her sides.
“And Aria…”
She stops. The words hang heavy in the air, unfinished, like a wound that refuses to close.
I see it in her face—the mirror image of her sister, the fire in Aria’s eyes that reflects her own. It’s tearing her apart inside.
Luciana steps closer, lowering her voice. “We can’t afford to lose her to Selene. If Aria falls, Isabella, so does everything we’ve bled for. And maybe us along with it.”
That night, I find Isabella in the garden behind the safehouse.
The moonlight spills over her like liquid silver, highlighting the angles of her face, the fragile fury in her eyes. She looks like a queen carved from stone—untouchable and breakable at the same time.
“I’m worried,” she says softly, almost to herself. “Selene’s magic. The sigil. It’s more than just threats. It feels like a curse—like she’s rewriting the rules.”
I step closer, my hand brushing her cheek, forcing her to look at me.
“Whatever she binds, we’ll break. Together.”
She leans into my touch for a heartbeat—just a heartbeat—and I feel the war in her, the exhaustion, the fire.
“We need to find Aria,” she whispers, her voice carrying steel beneath the softness.
“Before Selene twists her completely.”
The trail leads us to the dark heart of Palermo, where whispers of old blood still stain the ground. We track Selene’s presence to the ruins of an ancient crypt, a place steeped in mafia legends—a place where men used to vanish when they crossed the wrong family.
The air is heavy, thick with damp earth and forgotten secrets.
Every step echoes like a threat. The crypt walls are carved with names that time has almost erased, and every corner feels like a trap waiting to snap.
We’re not alone.
Footsteps—soft, deliberate—echo behind us. I signal Isabella to take cover, pressing her against the cold stone as I raise my weapon.
From the shadows, a figure emerges. Aria.
Her face is pale in the dim light, her eyes stormy and conflicted.
She looks like Isabella’s reflection in a cracked mirror, torn between the woman
she’s becoming and the girl Selene is poisoning.
“Isabella,” Aria says, her voice breaking. “You don’t understand. Selene’s plan… it’s bigger than us. Bigger than blood.”
Isabella steps forward, her voice trembling but fierce. “Then help me stop her.”
The crack of a rifle shatters the silence. Aria stumbles, a dark bloom of blood spreading across her chest like a terrible flower.
“Aria!” Isabella screams, diving to catch her before she hits the ground.
Selene’s voice drifts from the shadows, low and cold, like a ghost caressing the walls.
“Blood binds. Blood betrays.”
The world tilts. I fire into the darkness, the recoil biting into my shoulder, but Selene is already gone—vanishing like smoke, leaving behind only the echo of her voice.
\===============
Isabella cradles Aria, her tears falling onto her sister’s pale skin.
“No. No, stay with me,” Isabella gasps, her hands slick with Aria’s blood.
Aria’s eyes flutter open, glassy and wet. Her lips tremble as she forces out a single, urgent word—a whisper heavy with warning.
“Selene…”
Then, from the shadows, laughter rises—low at first, then swelling into something cold and triumphant.
It’s Selene. Her voice wraps around us like a noose.
“Blood sisters,” she croons. “Bound by fate… and broken by betrayal.”
The torches snuff out. The crypt plunges into darkness.
