Chapter 68: Sudden Concern
The knocking on the door got louder, and Emily's heart started racing.
She took a deep breath, trying to keep it together, walked to the door, and cautiously asked, "Who is it?"
"Ms. Johnson, it's me, Robert," came a familiar voice from outside.
Emily took another deep breath, trying to stay calm, and slowly opened the door.
Robert wasn't in his usual suit today, just a simple white T-shirt, but he still had that sharp, capable vibe.
"Good evening, Ms. Johnson!" Robert nodded slightly, flashing a polite smile.
Before Emily could even react, a bunch of people rushed in behind him, laden with various items.
"What's all this?" Emily looked at them, totally clueless about what was going on.
"Mr. Smith said you usually like sweets, so he had the cook whip these deserts up for you," Robert seemed to read Emily's mind and explained with a smile.
"Mr. Smith also mentioned the hotel's toiletries might not be your thing, so he had me bring the brands you usually use," Robert said, handing Emily a fancy makeup bag.
Robert smiled and explained, "These are all things Mr. Smith wanted me to get for you, Ms. Johnson. He said the climate in Silverlight City is dry, and you might not be used to it, so he prepared these for you. If there's anything else you need, just let me know, and I'll get it for you."
It was only then that Emily noticed the people were carrying humidifiers, air purifiers, various snacks, fruits, and even a brand-new set of pajamas.
"James is so thoughtful," Emily felt a warm surge in her heart; it turned out he had been silently caring for her all along.
"Mr. Smith said it's your first time in Silverlight City, and you're not familiar with the place, so he was worried you might not be comfortable here," Robert observed her expression and added, "He also said that if you need anything, just let me know, and don't hesitate to ask."
Emily's cheeks turned a bit pink. She nodded gently and said in a low voice, "Thank him for me."
Robert was super efficient. In no time, the group had the room looking perfect.
"Ms. Johnson, is there anything else you need?" Robert asked.
Emily shook her head and said, "No, thank you, Robert."
Robert smiled and replied, "It's my honor to serve you, Ms. Johnson."
"Ms. Johnson, please rest early. I'll take my leave now," With that, Robert left the room with the other staff.
After seeing Robert off, Emily looked around the room, feeling warm inside.
Emily closed the door, and the room fell silent again.
Although James wasn't much for sweet talk, he always showed his care through actions.
She walked to the table, picked up a delicate pastry, and tasted it. A sweet flavor instantly spread across her tongue.
However, Emily felt that the sweetness of the pastry was nothing compared to the sweetness in her heart at that moment.
She walked to the window, looking at the bustling night view outside, and a sweet smile unconsciously curved her lips.
She thought, 'Maybe marrying James isn't such a bad thing after all.'
Just then, her phone rang.
The crisp ringtone interrupted Emily's thoughts. She glanced at the screen, seeing the caller was Bianca, and her heart sank slightly.
"Hey, Bianca," Emily answered the phone, trying to sound chill.
"Emily, did you make it to Silverlight City? How's it going? Are you settling in okay?" Bianca's voice was full of concern.
"Yeah, I just got here. The hotel's really nice, so don't worry," Emily said, picking up a delicate macaron. As expected, James had good taste; it was delicious.
"James didn't give you a hard time, did he?" Bianca's tone had a hint of tension.
"He's super busy with work, but he had his assistant set up the room for me and got a bunch of food and supplies," Emily said, avoiding a direct answer.
"That's good. Emily, James might seem cold, but he's actually got a soft heart. Don't be fooled by his appearance; he really cares about you," Bianca rambled on, trying to convince both herself and Emily.
Emily responded absentmindedly, feeling more and more uneasy.
"Bianca, I'm kinda tired. I want to rest now. I'll talk to you tomorrow," Emily found an excuse and quickly hung up the phone.
She tossed the phone aside and collapsed onto the bed; Bianca's words echoed in her mind.
Emily felt that sometimes James was hard to read, thinking, 'Does James really care about me?'
Just then, her phone screen lit up with a new message.
James: [Robert will pick you up at the hotel at 9 AM tomorrow.]
Emily looked at the brief message, feeling a mix of emotions. What did James want to do?
The next morning, with dark circles under her eyes, Emily absentmindedly followed Robert into the car.
The car drove through the city and finally stopped in front of a towering skyscraper.
"Ms. Johnson, we've arrived. Please follow me," Robert respectfully opened the car door for Emily.
Emily took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, and stepped into the building.
It was a typical commercial office building, luxuriously decorated with a cold metallic feel. Emily followed Robert into the elevator, which took them to the top floor.
The elevator stopped smoothly at the top floor, the indicator light glowing softly, which added a touch of mystery.
Emily took a deep breath, trying to suppress the inexplicable tension in her mind, and stepped out of the elevator.
After a few steps, a cold sandalwood scent mixed with a faint coffee aroma hit her, making her already nervous heart even more uneasy.
Robert led her through a carpeted corridor, lined with individual offices, each door closed, exuding an air of imposing authority.
"Ms. Johnson, Mr. Smith is in a meeting right now. Please wait in the lounge for a moment," Robert respectfully led Emily to a door carved with intricate patterns.
Emily nodded slightly and pushed the door open.
It was a spacious and bright lounge, with a panoramic view of the bustling city through the large floor-to-ceiling windows.
The room was simply yet luxuriously decorated, with light gray leather sofas, a dark brown wooden coffee table, and a few abstract oil paintings on the walls. They gave off a strong business vibe.
Through a glass window on one side of the room, she could clearly see the scene in the adjacent conference room.
At that moment, the atmosphere in the conference room was lively, with a young man standing in front of a projector, speaking passionately.
"Is that Samuel?" Emily murmured.
