Chapter 145: Danny

The sun is high in the sky, the air warm with a gentle breeze coming off the ocean, and for the first time in what feels like forever, there's nothing but laughter echoing around us. Today is a beach day, and it's exactly what we all needed—a break from the weight of everything, a chance to just be together, to enjoy this family we’ve fought so hard to protect.

Sofia is standing by the shore, her feet just barely touching the water, her laughter carried by the wind as Ethan, bundled up in his little sunhat, kicks his tiny feet from her arms. She looks radiant, her hair catching the sunlight, her smile so genuine it makes my heart swell. I can't help but stare for a moment, feeling that warmth in my chest, the kind that tells me that no matter what we've faced or what comes next, it's all worth it because of her.

“You gonna keep staring or are you actually gonna join us?” Riley calls from further down the beach, a grin on his face as he waves me over. He’s got a frisbee in his hand, and Nate’s already a few paces away, ready to catch whatever Riley throws his way. They’re acting like kids, all carefree smiles and playful shoves, and I realize it’s been too long since I’ve seen them like this.

I jog over, kicking off my sandals as I reach them, the sand warm beneath my feet. “You two are gonna tire yourselves out before we even get in the water,” I tease, raising an eyebrow.

Nate laughs, shaking his head. “I’ll take my chances,” he says, and there’s a glimmer in his eyes that tells me he’s just as grateful for this day as I am. We’ve all needed this—a moment to breathe, to let go of the tension that’s kept us wound so tightly for so long.

Riley tosses the frisbee, and Nate jumps to catch it, his feet sinking into the sand as he lands. I laugh as Riley gives him a triumphant look, his arms raised in a mock victory pose. “Alright, alright, showoff,” I say, shaking my head. “Let’s see if you can catch this one.”

I grab the frisbee, sending it flying down the beach, and Riley takes off after it, his laughter mixing with the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. I glance back toward Sofia, my smile softening as I watch her dip her toes in the water, her eyes on us, a look of pure happiness on her face.

“You look like a lovesick puppy,” Nate mutters, nudging me with his elbow. I roll my eyes, shoving him back lightly.

“Can you blame me?” I say, my gaze still on her. “Look at her. She’s… she’s everything.”

Nate’s expression softens, and he nods. “Yeah,” he says, his voice quiet. “She really is.”

We make our way back toward Sofia, Riley joining us with the frisbee in hand, his cheeks flushed from running. “Think we should get Ethan in the water?” he asks, his eyes on the little guy, who’s now looking at the waves with wide eyes, curiosity written all over his tiny face.

Sofia smiles, nodding. “I think he’s ready,” she says, her voice filled with that gentle warmth that always makes my heart skip a beat. She looks at each of us, her eyes shining. “You all coming?”

“Wouldn’t miss it,” I say, stepping closer and wrapping an arm around her waist, pressing a kiss to her temple. She leans into me, her body warm against mine, and I feel that familiar sense of peace settle over me. This is what it’s all about—these little moments, these small, perfect pieces of happiness that make everything else worth it.

We wade into the water together, the waves lapping gently at our ankles. Ethan lets out a delighted squeal as the cool water touches his toes, his tiny hands waving excitedly. Sofia laughs, her eyes bright as she looks at him, her love for our son so clear, so overwhelming.

Riley splashes Nate, a mischievous grin on his face, and Nate retaliates immediately, sending a wave of water crashing over Riley’s head. “Oh, it’s on now,” Riley says, and before I know it, they’re both soaked, laughing like kids as they try to dunk each other in the waves.

Sofia shakes her head, her laughter ringing out as she looks at me. “They’re impossible,” she says, but there’s so much love in her voice that I can’t help but smile.

“Yeah, but they’re our impossible,” I say, leaning down to press a kiss to her lips, feeling her smile against my mouth. She kisses me back, her free hand coming up to rest against my chest, and for a moment, it’s just us—just the two of us and the waves and the warmth of the sun on our skin.

When we pull away, Ethan lets out another happy squeal, his tiny hands reaching for me, and I take him from Sofia, lifting him high above my head, his laughter filling the air. “You like the water, buddy?” I ask, and he kicks his feet in response, his smile wide and bright.

Nate and Riley make their way back over to us, both of them dripping wet, their smiles just as wide as Ethan’s. “Alright, alright,” Nate says, holding his hands up in surrender. “I think we’re calling a truce. For now.”

Riley chuckles, running a hand through his wet hair. “Yeah, yeah. Until next time.”

We all gather together, the five of us standing there in the shallow water, the sun warming our skin, the waves gently lapping at our feet. Sofia leans into me, her head resting against my shoulder, and I wrap my free arm around her, holding her close. Nate stands beside her, his hand resting on her back, while Riley reaches out to tickle Ethan’s foot, making him giggle.

It’s a simple moment, but it’s everything. It’s love and laughter and family. It’s the promise that no matter what comes next, we’ll face it together. And as I look at the people I love most in the world, I know that this is what we’ve been fighting for. This is what makes it all worth it.

“We’re pretty damn lucky, you know that?” I say, my voice filled with emotion.

Sofia looks up at me, her eyes shining. “Yeah,” she whispers, her smile soft. “We really are.”

And as we stand there, the sun setting behind us, the sky painted in shades of pink and orange, I know that no matter what happens, we’ll always have this. We’ll always have each other. And that’s more than enough.
