Chapter 82: A Heartbeat Away
As the evening deepened, the soft hum of the kitchen filled the air. Ronan, effortlessly at home in her space, moved around with practiced ease, pulling ingredients from her pantry and fridge as though he had been doing it all his life. Zara sat on the couch, watching him with a strange mix of affection and exasperation. She had always liked the way he seemed to take charge of a room, but tonight it felt like his presence was something else—something more intimate, as though they were more than just old friends catching up.
“You’re hovering,” she teased, watching as he carried two plates of pasta over to the couch.
“And you love it,” Ronan shot back with that infuriatingly charming grin of his, setting her plate in front of her.
Zara rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t suppress the small smile that tugged at her lips. It was an old dance they shared, one she had long grown accustomed to. The banter, the teasing, the undeniable connection between them—it had always been there, just beneath the surface, lurking in the corners of their conversations and glances.
They ate together, the conversation flowing effortlessly as it always did between them. The comfort of the past, the memories of their teenage years, was familiar and grounding.
“Remember that time we snuck into the campus library after hours?” Zara said, the laughter bubbling up as she recalled the chaos they’d caused that night.
Ronan’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “And you knocked over an entire stack of books trying to reach one on the top shelf.”
Zara groaned, though her smile betrayed her. “I had to reach it! You were too busy flirting with the librarian to help me.”
“I told you I’d never let you live that down,” Ronan teased, his eyes twinkling with the same mischievous energy they had shared back then.
“You’ve kept your promise,” she grumbled good-naturedly, trying to hide the smile that was tugging at the corners of her mouth.
They finished their meal, the familiar ease of their time together wrapping them both in a comfortable cocoon. But as the last of the plates were cleared away, something changed. The air between them grew heavier, charged with something Zara couldn’t quite place.
Ronan stretched out beside her on the couch, his presence filling the space. His arm draped casually over the backrest, dangerously close to her shoulder. The proximity sent a ripple of tension through Zara, and she shifted slightly, trying to make sense of the feelings stirring in her chest. This was more than just their usual banter. There was something different tonight—something she couldn’t ignore.
“You’ve been quiet,” she said, breaking the silence that had settled between them.
Ronan glanced at her, his blue eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, he didn’t speak, just studied her face as if weighing something unspoken in the quiet.
“Just thinking,” he replied, his voice low, the words laced with something she couldn’t quite decipher.
“About what?” Zara pressed, her voice barely above a whisper. Her heart beat faster as the seconds stretched between them. She didn’t want to sound desperate, but the curiosity gnawed at her, and she wanted—needed—an answer.
He hesitated, his gaze flicking to her lips for the briefest of moments before quickly looking away, a subtle shift in his posture. Zara’s breath hitched at the intimate look, and the knot in her stomach tightened. Was he thinking about the same thing she was? The connection between them? Or was she just reading too much into it?
“Nothing important,” he said, his words casual, but there was something in the way he spoke them that didn’t quite match the lightness of his tone.
Zara leaned closer, the warmth of his body so close it was almost impossible to ignore. She could feel the heat between them, the undeniable pull, and her heart raced. “You’re lying,” she said softly, her voice trembling ever so slightly.
Ronan’s gaze flicked to hers, a playful glint returning to his eyes.
“Am I?” His tone was light, teasing, but it was different now—softer, as though there was something beneath the surface he wasn’t willing to let her see just yet.
Her pulse quickened as he reached up, his fingers brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver down her spine, and
Zara felt the breath catch in her throat. She waited, her body aching with anticipation, hoping—praying—that he would close the gap between them. That he would make the move she had been waiting for.
But instead, he pulled back slightly, his expression unreadable, the space between them growing even more palpable. Zara’s chest tightened with frustration.
“Ronan…” she began, her voice thick with emotion, the words caught in her throat. She didn’t know what she was expecting from him, but the uncertainty was gnawing at her.
He looked at her, his eyes dancing with something she couldn’t quite place.
“What?” His voice was light again, almost teasing, as if he hadn’t just left her hanging in the most maddening way possible.
Zara’s lips parted as she struggled to find the words.
“Nothing,” she muttered, her shoulders slumping as she leaned back against the cushions. She crossed her arms, trying to hide the ache in her chest, the disappointment she couldn’t quite swallow.
Ronan chuckled, the sound deep and effortlessly charming.
“What’s with the pout?” he asked, his gaze softening as he watched her. There was something about the way he looked at her now, something tender that made her heart flutter despite herself.
“You’re impossible,” she said, trying to hide the smile that was threatening to break through. It was frustrating—so incredibly frustrating—but she couldn’t help the way her heart softened in response to his teasing.
“And you’re adorable when you’re annoyed,” he shot back, his grin widening, and Zara couldn’t help it anymore. The smile broke through, a small, breathless laugh escaping her lips as she met his gaze.
She shook her head, the mixture of exasperation and affection swirling inside her. “You’re impossible,” she repeated, though this time it lacked its usual bite.
“And you’re just as impossible,” he replied, his voice softer now, quieter. He reached out, his hand brushing her arm in a touch that was gentle but laden with meaning.
Zara’s breath caught as his fingers lingered against her skin. It was a simple touch, nothing more than a fleeting moment, but it felt like everything had shifted. The air between them was thick with unspoken desire, Zara found herself at a loss for words.
She didn’t know what came next, or what this moment meant.
