Chapter 68: Anniversary Reflections

Thomas POV

The Tuscan villa's terrace overlooked rolling hills painted gold by afternoon sunlight as I watched Mary Rose emerge from our bedroom wearing the flowing sundress that made her look like something from a Renaissance painting. Our first wedding anniversary weekend had been perfectly planned three days away from Graystone Manor while Eleanor and Emma handled Catherine Rose's care, allowing us uninterrupted time to reconnect as husband and wife rather than just co-parents managing endless responsibilities.

"She's been asleep for two hours," Mary Rose announced, settling onto the terrace lounge beside me with her phone displaying Catherine Rose's peaceful face via video call with Eleanor. "Eleanor says she took her bottle perfectly and hasn't fussed once since we left."

"Are you surprised?" I asked, wrapping my arm around Mary Rose's shoulders and breathing in the familiar scent of her hair that still made my pulse quicken after a year of marriage.

"Honestly? Yes. I thought leaving her for three days would be harder for her than for me, but apparently I was wrong on both counts." Mary Rose leaned into my embrace, her body finally relaxing in ways that hadn't been possible since Catherine Rose's birth. "I miss her terribly, but I also feel like myself again for the first time in months."

"You feel different," I agreed, running my fingers through her auburn hair that caught the afternoon light like fire. "Less tense, more present. Like the Mary Rose I fell in love with instead of the exhausted mother trying to manage everything perfectly."

"Is that terrible to admit?"

"It's honest," I replied, turning her face toward mine so I could study the green eyes that had captivated me from our first meeting. "Mary Rose, loving our daughter completely doesn't mean losing yourself entirely. This weekend proves you can be an incredible mother and still be the passionate, creative woman I married."

Her smile was soft with relief and something deeper the intimate connection that had sustained us through pregnancy complications, newborn adjustments, and the countless daily compromises that marriage and parenthood required.

"Thomas, can I tell you something without you thinking I'm a terrible person?"

"You could never be terrible," I said, pulling her closer until she was practically lying across my chest, her warmth seeping through my shirt in ways that made focusing on conversation challenging.

"Sometimes when Catherine Rose is sleeping and I'm editing photos late at night, I think about what it would be like to have another baby," Mary Rose whispered, her fingers tracing patterns on my chest that sent heat straight through me. "Not immediately, but eventually. Someone for Catherine Rose to grow up with, someone else for us to love and watch develop."

My heart stuttered at her words, the conversation touching on desires I'd been afraid to voice since Catherine Rose's difficult delivery and NICU stay. "How many children do you want?"

"I used to think I didn't want any children at all," Mary Rose replied, lifting her head to meet my eyes. "Henry's abandonment convinced me that love wasn't reliable enough to risk bringing children into. But watching Catherine Rose grow, seeing how love multiplies instead of dividing when families expand I think I want at least two, maybe three."

"Even after everything we went through with Catherine Rose's early arrival and medical complications?"

"Especially because of what we went through," Mary Rose said firmly. "Thomas, we handled her NICU stay and my recovery and all the challenges together. We proved that our partnership is strong enough to weather any storm while protecting the people we love most."

I rolled us over so Mary Rose was beneath me on the wide lounge, her dress riding up to reveal the legs that had driven me to distraction since our first consultation meeting. The change in position brought her mouth within kissing distance, and I took advantage immediately, tasting the wine we'd shared with lunch and something uniquely Mary Rose that made my body respond with familiar urgency.

"So you're saying you want more children with me?" I murmured against her lips, my hands finding the hem of her dress and sliding beneath the fabric to discover she wasn't wearing anything underneath.

"I'm saying I want everything with you," Mary Rose breathed, arching against my touch as my fingers explored territory that had become beautifully familiar over our year of marriage. "More babies, more years, more of this just you and me and whatever family we create together."

"Mary Rose," I groaned, her words and the way she was moving beneath me combining to make coherent thought nearly impossible. "Are you trying to seduce me into agreeing to expand our family?"

"Is it working?" she asked, her laugh turning breathless as I found the spot that made her hips lift off the lounge cushion.

"Everything about you works on me," I admitted, sliding the dress up and over her head to reveal the body that had changed since Catherine Rose's birth but remained the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. "You could ask me for anything right now and I'd say yes."

"Anything?"

"Try me."

Instead of answering with words, Mary Rose pulled my shirt over my head and began exploring my chest with her mouth, her tongue tracing patterns that made my breathing ragged and my hands shake as I tried to maintain some semblance of control. When she moved lower, I nearly lost the ability to think entirely.

"Mary Rose, if you keep doing that, this conversation is going to end very quickly," I warned, my voice rough with need and the effort of not taking control of the pace she was setting.

"Maybe that's what I want," she replied, looking up at me with eyes darkened by desire and mischief. "Maybe I want my husband so overwhelmed with pleasure that he'll agree to anything I suggest."

"I already told you I'd agree to anything."

"Then make love to me like you did on our wedding night," Mary Rose whispered, pulling me down until our bodies were aligned and every point of contact sent fire through my nervous system. "Make love to me like we have all the time in the world and nothing else matters except this moment."

I kissed her deeply, pouring a year's worth of love and gratitude and desire into the connection between us while my hands relearned every curve and valley of her body. When I finally joined with her, Mary Rose's gasp of pleasure mixed with mine, the sensation of coming home combining with the excitement of rediscovering each other after months of stolen moments between parenting responsibilities.

"Thomas," Mary Rose breathed, her legs wrapping around me as we found the rhythm that had always felt perfectly synchronized, "I love you so much it scares me sometimes."

"Why does it scare you?"

"Because loving you this completely means I have everything to lose," she replied, her hands gripping my shoulders as I moved deeper, her body responding in ways that made rational conversation nearly impossible. "But also everything to gain."

"You'll never lose me," I promised, the words coming from somewhere deeper than conscious thought as we moved together toward the release that had been building since our plane touched down in Italy. "Whatever happens, wherever life takes us, you'll never lose me."

Mary Rose's answer was lost in the cry of pleasure that escaped her as we reached climax together, our bodies shaking with the intensity of connection that transcended mere physical satisfaction and touched something essential about our bond as partners and lovers.

Afterward, we lay entwined on the lounge as the sun began setting over the Tuscan countryside, Mary Rose's head on my chest and my fingers combing through her hair while our breathing gradually returned to normal.

"Thomas, I have something to tell you," Mary Rose said softly, her voice carrying nervousness that made me immediately alert despite the post-lovemaking languor affecting my entire body.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"I'm pregnant."

The words hit me like lightning, electrifying every nerve ending while my brain struggled to process information that felt both shocking and inevitable. "You're how do you know?"

"I've known for a week," Mary Rose admitted, lifting her head to study my face with anxious eyes. "I was waiting for the right moment to tell you, and our anniversary seemed perfect for sharing news about expanding our family."

"A week? Mary Rose, why didn't you tell me immediately?"

"Because I wanted to be certain, and because I wanted to tell you when we could actually discuss what it means without interruptions from Catherine Rose or family emergencies or business responsibilities." Mary Rose sat up, suddenly self-conscious despite our intimate position. "Are you happy? I know we didn't plan this so soon after Catherine Rose."

I pulled her back down against my chest, my heart hammering with excitement and love and protective instincts that made me want to wrap her in my arms and never let anything threaten her or our growing family.

"Mary Rose, I'm thrilled," I said firmly, tilting her chin up so she could see the truth in my expression. "Surprised, but absolutely thrilled. When are you due?"

"Early spring, if my calculations are correct. Which means Catherine Rose will be about fifteen months old when the baby arrives."

"Irish twins," I murmured, thinking about the logistics of managing two babies while running multiple businesses and supporting our extended family's various needs and commitments.

"Are you worried about managing everything?" Mary Rose asked, reading my expression with the accuracy that came from a year of learning each other's thoughts and concerns.

"I'm thinking about practical considerations," I admitted. "Two babies, expanding businesses, Eleanor's recovery, Henry's counseling program, Emma's doctoral work it's a lot of moving parts to coordinate."

"But we'll manage it together," Mary Rose said confidently. "We've proven we can handle whatever challenges arise while maintaining the love and support that make our family strong."

"We have," I agreed, rolling us over again so I could kiss her thoroughly while my hands explored her body with new reverence for the life growing inside her. "Mary Rose, you've given me everything I never knew I needed Catherine Rose, this marriage, and now another child. I love you more than I have words to express."

"Show me instead," Mary Rose whispered, her body already responding to my touch despite our recent lovemaking. "We have two more days of privacy, and I intend to celebrate our anniversary and our pregnancy news thoroughly."

Later that evening, we dressed for dinner at the villa's restaurant, Mary Rose radiant in a flowing dress that accommodated her figure while making her look like a goddess of fertility and love. Our conversation over wine and pasta covered the year behind us and the years ahead, reviewing professional achievements and personal growth while making plans for the expanded family we were creating.

"I have something for you," I said as dessert arrived, retrieving the small wrapped package I'd been saving for the perfect moment.

Mary Rose opened the gift to reveal a key attached to a small silver frame containing architectural plans for a photography studio expansion at the retreat center.

"Thomas, what is this?"

"Your anniversary gift a dedicated exhibition space for therapeutic photography at the retreat center," I explained, watching her face light up with understanding and excitement. "Complete with proper lighting, climate control, and space for both permanent installations and rotating exhibitions of family healing work."

"You're giving me my own gallery?"

"I'm giving you the professional recognition your work deserves while keeping it connected to our family mission," I corrected, reaching across to squeeze her hand. "Mary Rose, your photography has become essential to the retreat center's programs, and families have been asking about ways to share their healing stories with others who might benefit from seeing visual proof that recovery and growth are possible."

Mary Rose stood up and moved around the table to kiss me deeply, her gratitude and love apparent in the way she held me close while other diners smiled at our obvious happiness.

"This is the most thoughtful gift I've ever received," she whispered against my lips. "A space where my artistic vision serves our family's mission while contributing to other families' healing journeys."

"Just like our marriage," I replied, pulling her onto my lap despite being in a public restaurant. "Individual talents and dreams that serve shared goals while making each other stronger and more fulfilled."

"Thomas, I love you so much," Mary Rose said, her eyes bright with tears of joy. "This past year has been everything I never dared hope for, and knowing we're going to have another baby while building these dreams together it feels too wonderful to be real."

"It's real," I assured her, my hands resting on her still-flat belly where our second child was growing. "All of it our love, our family, our future together. Real and lasting and more beautiful than anything I ever imagined possible."

As we walked back to our villa under stars that seemed brighter than any I'd ever seen, Mary Rose's hand in mine and her body warm against my side, I felt overwhelming gratitude for the journey that had brought us to this moment. One year ago, we had exchanged vows in Catherine's memorial garden, uncertain about what the future would bring but certain about our love for each other.

Tonight, with news of our expanding family and dreams of continued growth together, that love felt strong enough to weather any challenge and celebrate every joy life might bring.
