Chapter 58

Chapter 58

“Kathryn…!!!” Lyon shouted, his mouth opened wide.

Kathryn’s scream echoed in the room, the sound of pain slicing through Lyon like a knife. He watched helplessly as she jerked in the chair, her leg buckling under the force of the shot.

Blood began to pool around her, spreading across the floor, and Lyon’s mind went blank. He couldn’t breathe.

Kathryn!” He shouted, struggling against the men holding him, his body trembling. She was everything to him. His life. His future. And now, this monster, Wendy, was trying to take her away from him.

Kathryn’s breath was shallow, her face a mask of pain. Her body was shaking, but she still managed to look at Lyon, her eyes filled with tears.

“Lyon... I... I’m sorry,” she whispered, but it barely registered through the haze of panic in his mind. He didn’t know if she was apologizing for what had happened, for what Wendy was doing to her... or maybe it was for something else.

But he couldn’t think about that right now. He had to save her. He had to stop Wendy.

“Why, Wendy?” Lyon choked out, his voice hoarse. “What the hell did we ever do to you?”

Wendy’s face twisted into something even darker, almost pleased by the pain in his voice. She crouched down next to Kathryn, her lips curling into a malicious grin.

“This is just the beginning, Lyon,” she said. Her voice was laced with satisfaction, like she was enjoying every second of his torment. “You haven’t even seen what I have planned next.”

Lyon’s vision blurred. His hands were still bound, his body still held in place, and all he could do was watch as Kathryn fought to stay conscious, to stay with him.

“No...” he whispered, the word barely escaping his throat. “No... please... not like this.”

Wendy stood up again, her eyes gleaming with dark pleasure. “It’s not over, Lyon. Not by a long shot.” She waved the gun between him and Kathryn. “So, what are you going to do now?”

Lyon’s blood ran cold. He had nothing left to lose. “You’re not getting away with this, Wendy,” he hissed. “I swear to God, you won’t.”

Suddenly, they heard noise from outside the room as though someone was there. Lyon swallowed the lump in his throat as Wendy stared straight at him.

She quickly threw a rope for the men holding him still, they tied him tightly to a chair as he struggled, his eyes on Kathryn who was breathing heavily, blood spilled all over.

With a smug, Wendy motioned for the men to check out who was outside and put them in their place. They left in no time, leaving just Wendy, Lyon, James and Kathryn.

Lyon sat there, tied to the chair, every inch of him aching from the ropes cutting into his wrists.

Wendy was standing not far away, her eyes cold, calculating. She had this smug, twisted look on her face, like she was already savoring her victory. Lyon clenched his jaw, refusing to show her that she was getting to him.

“You’ve lost, Lyon,” she said, her voice dripping with malice. “Give up. It’s over. Nothing you do now can change what’s going to happen.”

Lyon gritted his teeth. He wasn’t going to break. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of seeing him give in. But damn it, it was hard to stay calm. Every fiber of his being was screaming at him to do something, to get out of there, to save Kathryn.

What Wendy didn’t know was that James wasn’t as helpless as she thought. James had been pretending to be knocked out, lying still, but underneath the ropes, he was working his hands free. He’d been patient, biding his time. Now, he was ready.

Wendy lifted the gun again, this time, she positioned it on Kathryn's baby bump, with her deadly smirk.

“This is fun..” she smirked.

Lyon saw James move, quick and silent. James grabbed a chair, lifting it above his head. In one swift motion, he slammed it down hard onto Wendy’s head. The crack of the chair hitting her skull rang out in the room. Wendy let out a shocked gasp before crumpling to the floor, unconscious before she even hit the ground.

Lyon’s breath caught in his chest. He couldn’t believe it. It happened so fast. One minute, Wendy was standing there, smug as ever, and the next, she was out cold on the floor. James stood there for a moment, catching his breath. His hands were still raw from the ropes, but there was a fierce satisfaction on his face. He’d done it.

Lyon couldn’t help but stare, still trying to process what had just happened. James had freed himself. He’d taken down Wendy. They had a shot now.

“Are you okay?” James asked, glancing at Lyon.

Lyon nodded, rubbing his wrists where the ropes had dug into his skin. “Yeah. I’m good. Help Kathryn! We need to get out of here before her men come back.”

“Get to Kathryn!” Lyon shouted again, though slow, his eyes fixed on her.

“We'll.” James said.

James was already moving, cutting the ropes that bound Lyon to the chair. The second he was free.

Lyon and James rushed over to Kathryn, their hands moving quickly, untangling the ropes. Lyon kept his hold on her, trying to keep her calm, but her eyes were wide with panic. The pain in her face made his chest tighten, but they couldn’t waste any more time. He tore at his shirt, trying to stop the bleeding from her leg.

Kathryn let out a scream, her whole body jerking with pain, but Lyon didn’t stop. He tied the fabric tight, holding it against her wound. He spoke softly, trying to comfort her as he worked fast, but his voice cracked with frustration.

“Kathryn, just breathe. Stay with me,” he said, trying to keep his hand steady as he worked.

James didn’t say a word but moved to Kathryn’s side. Without hesitation, he lifted her onto his back, carrying her the way they needed to go. Lyon followed, keeping pace, making sure they didn’t run into any trouble on the way out. Every step was measured, the weight of what had just happened bearing down on him.

They were so close.

Then, they heard the sound of footsteps coming from the entrance, and Lyon’s heart skipped. But it was Martins.

“Her men have been taken care of, everywhere is clear,” Martins said, his eyes scanning the room before locking onto Kathryn.

Lyon’s eyes didn’t leave her face. He nodded quickly. “Get the car. Now,” he ordered, voice urgent. He wasn’t about to lose this chance to get her to safety.

Martins didn’t hesitate, running out as fast as he came in.

Lyon stayed close, guiding James and Kathryn to the door. Kathryn was barely conscious, but she hung onto James, her body sagging with exhaustion. They reached the entrance and the cool night air hit them, but Lyon’s mind was too focused to feel anything else.

“Come on,” he urged, pushing them all forward.

But just as they made it out the door, there was a noise. The sound of heavy boots coming down the hallway. Lyon froze, his heart racing.

The door swung open, and there were more men, rushing in. The team that was supposed to help them had arrived. And there she was, Wendy. They’d taken her in, still unconscious.

Lyon didn’t even look at her as she was dragged past. The sight of her, defeated and unconscious, barely registered. He was too tired to care anymore. He turned back to see Martins coming around the corner with the car.

“Let’s go,” Lyon muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

Martins threw open the car door, ready to get them out. Lyon slid in beside James, carefully helping Kathryn into the back seat. He didn’t take a moment to breathe. They still had a long way to go before this was over. But for now, at least they were safe.

Lyon closed his eyes for a second. They had made it. But the journey wasn’t over yet. They still had to figure out what to do next.

Lyon’s heart was racing as the car screeched to a halt in front of the hospital. Before it even fully stopped, he was out of the car and rushing to the back, where Kathryn was barely conscious, her body limp. He didn’t care who saw or what people thought, he just needed help, now.

“Somebody help!” Lyon shouted as his hands shook trying to help get her out of the car. Nurses rushed over, quickly moving to take Kathryn from him and onto a stretcher. She was pale, her eyes barely open. Lyon’s stomach turned at the sight.

The nurses rushed her into the emergency ward, and Lyon stayed frozen for a moment, unsure what to do. His mind was racing.

What if it was too late? What if he couldn’t save her?

His feet started moving before he could think. He began pacing, back and forth, back and forth, unable to sit still. Every minute that passed felt like hours. Every time a nurse or doctor passed by, his eyes would dart toward them, desperate for any sign, any word, any sign that she would be okay.

But the only thing that met him was silence.

He called out to a doctor passing by, “Doctor!” His voice shaky, but the doctor didn’t even glance at him, too busy with other patients. Lyon gripped the wall beside him, trying to steady himself. But it felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.

Just when he thought he might lose it, another doctor stepped in, joining the team. Lyon’s pulse quickened, and his stomach flipped again. “No,” he muttered, his chest tightening. The sight of more doctors only made the panic swell inside him. Was this it?

James and Martins came over, both of them looking as anxious as Lyon felt. No one spoke; it was all too heavy. They stood there, just waiting for something, anything, that would give them hope.

Finally, after what felt like forever, a doctor motioned for Lyon to follow him. His legs felt like lead as he followed down the hall.

The doctor led him into a small office and sat behind a desk. Lyon barely heard the words as the doctor spoke. “Your wife’s in critical condition,” the doctor said, his voice calm, but serious. “We need to perform an emergency cesarean section. The baby is at risk.”

Lyon didn’t even hear the rest of what the doctor said. His mind was just spinning, the lump in his throat growing with every word. He looked at the paper the doctor handed him, his hands trembling. He had to sign it.

Lyon signed the paper without even really reading it. His voice came out quiet and strained as he looked at the doctor. “Please. Just make sure she’s okay.”

The doctor nodded, walking out of the room quickly, leaving Lyon with nothing but his own panic. He just wanted to go to her, to hold her hand, but he couldn’t. Not yet.

The wait felt like an eternity. Lyon paced again, his thoughts wild, his heart in his throat. His mind kept returning to Kathryn, her pale face.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the door opened, and the doctor walked in, a smile barely showing. “Congratulations, Mr. Lyon,” the doctor said, voice calm. “Your wife and the baby are both safe.”

Lyon almost collapsed on the spot. He couldn’t breathe for a second. It was real. They were okay. Kathryn was okay. The baby was okay.

James and Martins stepped into the room with him, both of them holding their breath. But the relief on their faces mirrored his.

Lyon felt his knees weaken, and he just exhaled, barely able to find his words. “Thank God,” he whispered. “Thank God!”
