Chapter 215 The Years I Wronged Him
Chapter 215 The Years I Wronged Him
Eleanor reached for her phone on the nightstand and glanced at the caller ID. It was Tom.
Her pulse quickened as she immediately pressed answer.
"Ms. Mitchell, I've remembered everything." On the other end, Tom's voice couldn't hide his excitement.
Eleanor snapped fully awake. "Stay there. I'm coming right over."
She hung up and threw off the covers.
A gentle knock sounded at the door.
"Eleanor, what's wrong?"
Terrence's voice came from outside, rough with sleep.
Eleanor strode over and pulled open the door, meeting his concerned golden eyes. "Tom called. He's remembered. I need to get to the estate."
"I'm coming with you."
Without hesitation, Terrence turned back to the guest room to change, and the two hurried out.
The night lay heavy around them. The black Vortex Vehicle sped through the empty streets.
Eleanor kept staring out the car window, her fingers unconsciously tapping against her knee.
Terrence held the steering wheel with one hand and reached over with the other to cover her hand. "Don't worry. We're almost there."
"I know." Eleanor pressed her lips together. "I've just... I've waited so long."
Since the day she'd returned to The Mitchell Mansion, she'd been investigating the truth about her father's death.
Now, they were finally getting close to answers.
About forty minutes later, the car pulled into Rosewood Estate.
Tom was already waiting in the reception room. Seeing them enter, he quickly stood.
During his time recovering at the estate, he'd gained some weight and looked much healthier, but his expression was grave.
"Ms. Mitchell, Mr. Thornton."
"Sit down and talk." Terrence led Eleanor to the sofa, his golden eyes fixed on Tom. "Tell her everything you've remembered."
Tom took a deep breath and slowly began.
"Before the Mitchell Group got into trouble, I noticed Finnian acting strange. He'd take phone calls late at night, and afterward he'd look like hell."
"Once I was working late and passed by his office. I heard him arguing with someone. He said, 'Don't touch her. I'll do whatever you want.'"
Eleanor's hands clenched.
"The 'her' he mentioned—who was it?"
Tom glanced at her. "Ms. Mitchell, I think he was talking about you."
Eleanor's face went pale.
Terrence reached out and held her trembling hand. "Let him continue."
Tom went on. "Later, company secrets started leaking. Everyone suspected Finnian, but I felt he wasn't doing it willingly. Someone must have been threatening him."
"Then your father had his accident."
Tom's voice dropped. "I remember that afternoon. He got a phone call and his face went white. He rushed out. I chased after him to ask if he needed a driver, but it was too late."
"That was the last time I saw him at the company."
Eleanor's eyes reddened. "Do you know who made the call?"
Tom shook his head. "I don't know. But I overheard Finnian on a call once, and he called the other person 'Raven.'"
"Raven?" Eleanor frowned.
"Yes." Tom nodded. "Finnian mentioned that he was looking for what Raven wanted, begging Raven not to hurt anyone."
"There's one more thing." Tom paused. "Finnian once mentioned a place—Westmere Sanatorium. He said it wasn't an ordinary place, that it was Raven's experimental base."
Eleanor and Terrence exchanged glances.
Westmere Sanatorium—they'd heard that name from Ralph too.
Tom hesitated, then spoke again. "Ms. Mitchell, there's something else. The night before Finnian left the Mitchell mansion, he pulled me aside and gave me an envelope. He said, 'Tom, keep this for me. If I don't come back, give it to Eleanor.'"
Eleanor's heart lurched. "What was in the envelope?"
Tom shook his head. "I don't know. I never opened it. At the time I thought he was just being emotional, so I didn't think much of it. Looking back now, he was already preparing for the worst."
Terrence immediately asked, "Where's the envelope now?"
"In my old house, under the floorboards beneath the bed." Tom said. "I haven't been back all these years, so it should still be there."
Terrence pulled out his phone and made a call, instructing someone to retrieve the envelope from Tom's house.
Eleanor clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms. She didn't know how much more Finnian had hidden from her.
After Tom finished speaking, he seemed drained and leaned back against the sofa. "Ms. Mitchell, that's all I know. All these years I didn't dare remember, afraid those people would find me again. After that car accident, I really did forget a lot, but the doctor Mr. Thornton brought was incredible and helped me recover these memories."
Eleanor was silent for a moment, then spoke hoarsely. "Tom, thank you."
"Ms. Mitchell, don't say that." Tom shook his head, his eyes reddening. "Your father was very good to me. I was useless, couldn't do anything for him. Now being able to tell you all this, I feel like I can finally breathe again."
Terrence looked at him. "Would you be willing to say all this in court?"
Tom paused, then nodded firmly. "I would."
When they left the reception room, it was already past 3 AM.
The night wind cut through the air, and Eleanor shivered.
Terrence took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders, pulling her into his arms. "Let's go back and rest first. We'll continue when it's light."
"Terrence." Eleanor buried her face in his chest, her voice muffled. "My dad was murdered. It wasn't an accident. I always suspected it, and now I know I was right."
Terrence tightened his arms around her. "I'll make Raven pay."
Eleanor said nothing more, just held him tighter.
On the drive back, Eleanor replayed Tom's words over and over in her mind.
Only now did she understand—Finnian had been threatened, yet had been protecting her in his own way all along, while she had misunderstood him all these years.
"Eleanor?" Terrence noticed something was off.
"I'm fine." Eleanor opened her eyes, her voice hoarse. "I'm just thinking about how I blamed him for so many years."
Terrence said nothing more, just held her hand tighter.
Some truths require great courage to face.
But whatever happened next, she was no longer alone.
Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains into the bedroom. Eleanor was still sleeping when her phone started buzzing nonstop.
She groggily reached for it. Messages from Lily: [Ms. Mitchell, you need to see this! Something big happened to the Wells family!]
Eleanor clicked the link. It was a financial news story—Everstone Group had officially declared bankruptcy, and Chairman Kirk had been taken in by police for investigation on suspicion of economic crimes.
The comments section had exploded.
[Serves him right! That's what he gets for letting Freya bully people.]
[I heard his daughter Freya has it even worse—he forced her to marry some guy in his fifties.]
[Really? That's even harsher than kicking her out of the family.]
[It's true. My relative works for the Hill family and saw it with their own eyes. That man's a real piece of work, beats people at the drop of a hat.]
