Chapter 739: The Villain Gets Her Due
Thea felt her heart skip a beat under Alex's furious glare.
She wasn't feeling well, true, but she knew better than to admit it now. Alex wouldn't believe her anyway. After all, if he had managed to track her down to this hospital so quickly, it could only mean one thing-Trista, that traitorous woman, had sold her out.
Judging by the storm cloud on Alex's face and his icy demeanor, Thea could also guess that he had learned about the surgery.
But despite his anger, Thea couldn't help feeling a sense of triumph. The surgery was done. No matter what Alex said or did now, the fact remained: she had secured Benjamin's kidney.
What was there to lose?
Benjamin, on the other hand, had lost much. Without one of his kidneys, his fragile health was bound to deteriorate further. He wouldn't last long now.
And wasn't that exactly what he deserved?
Alex's voice snapped her out of her smug reverie.
"You're still smiling? If something happens to Benjamin, you'll pay for it!"
Disgust radiated from him as he looked at her. If not for the sheer revulsion he felt, Alex might have grabbed her right then and wiped the triumphant smirk off her face with his own hands.
But Thea remained calm, leaning back in her wheelchair with an air of ease.
"How could I possibly have a bad ending?" she replied, her tone light and mocking. "Isn't this ending just perfect for me?"
The surgical incision still throbbed, but she bore it with a grin, refusing to let Alex see any weakness.
Alex, however, was not amused. His anger flared again as a thought crossed his mind. "When the police get here, you'll find out just how perfect your ending is."
Thea's smirk faltered for a moment before she replaced it with an expression of wide-eyed innocence.
Though she had already won, she knew that if Alex was warning her about the police, she needed to play her part carefully.
"Alex, I didn't mean for this to happen," she said, her voice soft and pitiful. "Benjamin willingly donated his kidney to me. Even if you're angry, you can't really blame me, can you?"
Hearing her say his name so intimately sent a wave of nausea through Alex.
But it was her words that truly made him pause.
Thea thought Benjamin's kidney had been transplanted into her?
For a moment, Alex was stunned. He had assumed Thea must have been either generous or greedy, giving Benjamin's kidney to someone else for profit. But now he realized she didn't even know the truth.
She actually believed she had received Benjamin's kidney.
Alex's lips curled into a mocking smile as he turned back to her. "Thea, tell me-what surgery did you have?"
Thea froze, caught off guard by the question. Her mind raced.
Why was he asking her this?
Something felt off.
Why hadn't she woken up in a hospital bed, but in a wheelchair instead? She had assumed Alex was responsible for the wheelchair, but where was he planning to take her?
And where was Benjamin?
If the surgery had gone according to plan, Benjamin wouldn't have been placed far from her. Yet the hospital room Alex had checked earlier was empty.
Whose room was it if not Benjamin's?
And why had Alex seemed so angry earlier, even yelling at Andrew before she woke up?
A growing sense of unease settled over Thea. She couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. Everything should have gone exactly as she had planned-so why couldn't she make sense of the situation?
Alex's voice cut through her thoughts like a knife.
"Thea! I'm asking you again-what surgery did you have?"
Thea glared at him, shoving down her doubts and clinging to her earlier confidence.
"What else could it have been?" she scoffed. "Benjamin donated his kidney to me. Of course, it was a kidney transplant."
She emphasized her words with a smug sneer, hoping to provoke him.
But Alex didn't rise to her bait.
Instead, his smile turned sharper, colder.
Something about his expression unsettled her.
"Why are you laughing?" she demanded, her voice tinged with panic.
Alex didn't answer. He simply continued to laugh, his mockery growing louder with every passing second.
Thea's unease deepened. She tried to move her wheelchair, hoping to slip away quietly. But the slightest shift sent searing pain through her surgical wound, and her body felt weaker than it should have.
Why wasn't she feeling better after the transplant? Shouldn't she be stronger now?
Her growing dread was mirrored in the erratic rhythm of her heartbeat.
Thea's hand tightened on the wheelchair's controls, and she tried to leave, ignoring Alex's looming figure in front of her.
But Alex reached out effortlessly, his hand pressing her wheelchair in place.
Panic filled Thea's eyes as he leaned down to her level, his voice cold and biting.
"Thea, you're pathetic."
The revelation that Thea had been as clueless as anyone else left Alex filled with contempt. For all her scheming, she had been outplayed.
"What do you mean?" Thea snapped, sweat beading on her forehead as dizziness clouded her vision. She was too weak to fight, but her fear pushed her forward.
Alex's words cut through her like a blade.
"You want to know what I mean?" he said, his tone dripping with scorn. "It's simple. The one who harms others will always end up harming herself."
Thea's fragile confidence shattered.
"What are you talking about? Speak clearly!" she hissed, desperate for answers.
Before Alex could respond, Andrew's voice rang out from behind him.
"Alex! I'm back!"
Andrew approached quickly, his face dark with anger.
When he saw Thea sitting in the wheelchair, his fury boiled over.
"Thea, you vile woman! How dare you hurt Benjamin!"
Andrew's hatred spilled from him in a torrent of rage. He clenched his fists, ready to strike, but Alex held him back.
"Andrew, don't lose your head," Alex said firmly. "She'll pay for what she's done."
