Chapter 574: Holding a Grudge Against Grace

"Chloe got into a car accident?" Amelia was shocked at first, then blinked at me, asking with some confusion, "If she got into an accident, why are you in such a rush? Who called you?"

"Who else could it be? Grace. The two of them are together and might need help. Let's go, quickly!"

Even though it was like finding a fly in your soup, they were all good friends after all. No matter how unwilling Amelia was, she could only pick up her coat from the floor, put it on, and hurry out the door with me. We drove straight to the Maternal and Child Health Hospital.

When we got to the hospital, Grace was waiting on the first floor. Normally, if she saw me arriving in Amelia's car, she'd definitely be unhappy, not only would she give Amelia dirty looks, but she'd also ask all sorts of questions.

Today was different though. She seemed really scared. When she saw Amelia and me getting out of the car together, she threw herself at me without any hesitation, hugging my neck and crying, "It's over, it's over! If Chloe doesn't make it, I won't be able to explain myself!"

Seeing this, Amelia's eyes went wide as she stared at us.

Although she'd encouraged me to get together with Grace before, based on her observations, she probably still thought Grace and I didn't have that kind of relationship. Now seeing Grace like this, she must have realized that my relationship with Grace was definitely not ordinary.

Just then, Bob arrived in his car too.

After getting out, Bob looked very surprised to see Amelia and me. Grace immediately let go of me and told him that Chloe was being treated in the emergency room.

Then Grace led us to the emergency room entrance. Chloe apparently wasn't out of danger yet and was still inside.

Bob asked Grace what exactly had happened.

It turned out that while Grace was washing dishes at home, Chloe was about to drive out and happened to see Grace's car parked outside, a rare sight, so she knocked and came in.

Seeing that Grace wasn't busy, she asked her to come along to the hospital to check on the baby.

Grace, who had already made plans with me to go shopping, somehow agreed and gave me a call.

When they left, they'd already confirmed that Olivia was on duty at the hospital, so they went there. After Olivia's examination showed the baby was fine, the three of them chatted for a bit, then Chloe and Grace got up to leave.

Grace had planned to go straight home, but Chloe, for some reason, even though the baby wasn't even three months along yet, said there was a baby store across from the hospital with lots of good stuff and insisted on going to look.

Grace had no choice but to go with her.

The roadside shop was actually quite small. Although it was all baby products, there wasn't much variety. Yet Chloe stayed inside for ages, asking about this and that, as if deliberately not wanting to leave.

Right then, Grace got a phone call. After she went outside to take it, she told Chloe to leave, but Chloe still didn't want to. Finally, after Grace urged her repeatedly, Chloe left without buying anything.

Grace had already crossed the street when an SUV came by. Chloe stood at the roadside, planning to wait for the SUV to pass before crossing. Unexpectedly, a motorcycle came from the opposite direction, going really fast and weaving left and right.

The SUV swerved to avoid the motorcycle and hit Chloe, sending her flying.

After Chloe hit the ground, she rolled twice, then started bleeding heavily.

The whole thing was purely an accident.

Grace, standing across the street, was scared out of her wits. She first called the police, then called me, then notified Bob.

Apparently the SUV driver was some thug, and there were three or four people in the car. After hitting someone, they didn't run. Instead, it was the motorcyclist who tried to escape, but the thugs surrounded him and beat him up badly, leaving him unable to get up.

Later the police came, investigated the scene, cleared the traffic, and took both the thugs and the motorcyclist to the traffic police station for statements.

Grace wasn't at fault in any of this. Seeing how scared she was, she probably felt that if she hadn't been rushing Chloe, Chloe wouldn't have suffered this disaster, so she felt guilty.

After hearing everything, Bob and Amelia could only sigh and gasp, but didn't say much.

Seeing Grace crying non‑stop, I quickly helped her up and walked toward the balcony nearby, comforting her, "This was just an accident. Why blame yourself?"

Grace shook her head. After reaching the balcony and seeing no one around, she said quietly, "After Chloe's accident, I rushed to her side right away, and she actually gritted her teeth and viciously blamed me, saying I deliberately harmed her!"

"How is that possible?"

Grace said tearfully, "You don't know what it was like. This morning when she asked me to come with her for the checkup, I didn't want to at first. But then she told me straight out that the baby in her belly is yours, and whether I'm your sister‑in‑law or your future woman, I should accompany her for the checkup."

Chloe wasn't asking Grace to accompany her for a checkup, she clearly wanted to show off in front of Grace, meaning: even if you, an older woman, can marry him, I'm carrying his baby.

Setting aside whether Chloe's reasoning made sense, they were good friends after all, and Chloe was Bob's wife, so of course Grace didn't want to break off their friendship over this.

More importantly, Grace didn't want to lose me, so she didn't want Chloe using the baby as leverage to eventually divorce Bob and latch onto me. That was why she had to humor Chloe.

The problem was Chloe wouldn't let it go. After the checkup, she insisted on going to the baby store and even had Grace help her pick out items, completely trying to provoke Grace.

Actually, I knew very well that Chloe had no intention of divorcing Bob. She was doing this to make Grace acknowledge her existence, so that even if Grace married me in the future, she wouldn't stop Chloe from continuing to see me.

I sighed, "Today's Sunday, isn't it? Since you went with her, why didn't you just keep going along with her? And who called you that made you so anxious to leave?"
