Chapter 728: Is It a Ghost?
Royce didn’t seem to notice anything off. After checking out another street, he came back.
“How’d it go? Did you see where they went?”
I pointed across the street. “Actually, they’ve been standing there the whole time. They never left.”
Royce frowned. “How’s that possible? I didn’t see them at all.”
I showed Royce the video footage. He watched it, then stared at the intersection for a moment.
“There’s something weird about this intersection. I walked across the crosswalk to the other side.”
I couldn’t shake the creepy feeling about this place. Even in broad daylight, it gave me chills.
And I had a hunch Tony and the others were standing there on purpose. They hadn’t budged for ages.
“Should we go over?” Royce asked, pressing his lips together.
I shook my head. Going over wouldn’t change anything. Better to leave and note this location.
“Is this intersection known for frequent accidents?” I asked, remembering something.
Royce quickly checked his phone and nodded. “On average, there’s an accident every two days, though the severity varies.”
So it was true. If Royce and I hadn’t parked our car on the side, we might’ve been the next “lucky ones.”
Was Tony trying to warn us in this way?
But why was he involved with that woman?
“I remember Joanna has Tony’s contact info. I’ll ask her to call him.”
Royce nodded. “Good idea.”
Joanna called Tony right away, but the Tony across the street didn’t pick up.
A moment later, Joanna messaged me, saying Tony was at work.
If Joanna’s contact was the real Tony, who were the three people across the street? What were they up to?
I showed Royce my chat with Joanna. His expression grew serious.
“Take some clear photos of them. We can investigate later,” Royce said after a pause.
I nodded. It was our best option for now.
But as I raised my phone to take pictures, the three people started walking towards us.
I managed to snap a few shots, but when I looked, they weren’t in the photos.
How could that be? Unless they weren’t human, but that was too bizarre.
Even if ghosts existed, weren’t they supposed to avoid daylight?
“I can’t get them on camera,” I frowned. “But I can record video.”
The three walked around the roundabout and then disappeared.
In the video, their disappearance seemed natural, like they vanished into a blind spot and never reappeared.
“This place is definitely weird. We shouldn’t stick around,” Royce said, pulling me back to the car. We drove off quickly.
Back home, I still couldn’t wrap my head around what had happened.
I watched the video again and noticed something odd. After the three people disappeared behind an obstacle, three new pedestrians showed up.
They blended in so well, it was easy to miss.
They must’ve disguised themselves as those pedestrians.
I shared my discovery with Royce. Once we understood the trick, it wasn’t as scary.
Royce took screenshots of the pedestrians' faces and started digging into their identities.
“Do you think they’re trying to warn us?” I asked. I didn’t get any hostile vibes from them. It felt like they were trying to help.
Royce tapped his fingers on the table. “Maybe. But why be so secretive?”
“Maybe they can’t show themselves or have other concerns,” I suggested.
Royce nodded. “Could be. But we can’t let our guard down.”
Royce was right. We couldn’t trust anyone easily, even if they seemed to have good intentions.
Who knew if they were sent by that organization?
After that day, we heard nothing more about those three people. It was like they vanished off the face of the earth.
The old mansion’s wine cellar was suddenly sealed off after a body was found inside. The police were investigating.
Since Royce and I had been to the cellar, we were called in for questioning.
After leaving the police station, I got a message from Joanna. There was a new development with Lyanna.
“What happened? Don’t worry, I’m on my way,” I reassured Joanna, who sounded both angry and anxious on the phone.
Joanna replied, “It’s at my new apartment. Bring a few strong people.”
Her words made me more worried. I told Royce, and he insisted on coming with me.
“We should bring some bodyguards. Joanna might be in danger,” I said.
But when we arrived, the situation was different.
Joanna was protecting Lyanna, facing off against a dark-skinned man and a large boy.
The man’s face showed a hint of greed, while the boy acted like he owned the place.
It was tense but hadn’t turned violent yet.
“Caroline, you’re finally here. Get them out,” Joanna demanded.
I instructed the bodyguards to separate them. “Throw them out.”
The man looked scared but said something infuriating. “That’s my daughter. If you throw me out, I’ll accuse you of kidnapping.”
I gave him a cold look. “Go ahead, call the police. Let’s see who gets arrested.”
