Chapter 194: Speculation
Timothy was sitting in the exact spot farthest away from Jessica.
Jessica glanced at Ophelia, the one who started all this, and just then Ophelia looked back at her with a slight smile.
The waiter brought everyone's drinks. Timothy saw the glass in front of Ophelia and quickly took it away.
"Ophelia is pregnant; she can't drink."
As soon as he said this, everyone offered their congratulations. Some asked why William didn't come, and others had recently heard some rumors. Ophelia responded openly, saying William was fine and thanking everyone for their concern.
Before long, Timothy was called out by his college roommate, leaving the rest gathered around Ophelia chatting.
Ophelia wasn't the timid type. After years in business, she had a cheerful personality and got along well with everyone. She kept pulling Freya into the conversation, too.
Seeing how close the two were, and knowing their husbands were also good friends, everyone warmed up to Freya considerably.
The atmosphere was pretty pleasant until a woman sitting next to Jessica suddenly spoke up. "Freya, you haven't had a drink with Jessica yet. You should toast her - after all, you only got to marry Timothy because she gave him up, right?"
The moment those words left her mouth, the lively private room fell silent. Ophelia asked with some confusion, "Let him go? What do you mean?"
The woman looked shocked, her expression exaggerated:
"Mrs. White, you don't know? I thought you two were so close, she must have told you. It's actually pretty simple - Timothy and Jessica were a couple back then, but Freya used her family's influence to force an engagement with Timothy. Timothy even tried desperately to defend Jessica at the time."
"But then Freya actually drugged Timothy at Jessica's birthday party. Jessica got so upset that she broke up with Timothy and left for abroad with a broken heart. That's how Timothy ended up being forced to marry Freya."
Freya's face went pale. Just as she was about to explain, Ophelia gently patted the back of her hand. Ophelia looked up at the woman who had just spoken, her tone calm:
"Did you see Freya drag him with your own eyes?"
The woman froze. "No, but I figured..."
"You didn't." Ophelia cut her off and turned to look at the others in the room. "Did any of you actually see it happen?"
Everyone fell silent, even quieter than before.
The woman looked uncomfortable, not knowing what to say. Jessica tugged at her sleeve, and only then did she continue, "I didn't see it myself, but Freya was the one who handed Timothy that drink. He got drugged after drinking it - if it wasn't Freya, who else could it have been?"
She looked at Freya with complete certainty, as if the facts were right there in front of everyone.
Ophelia watched the whole thing, and after listening, she smiled:
"So you're all just guessing. In that case, I can guess too - Ms. Morgan is the most likely suspect."
She stared straight at Jessica. Jessica's smile froze on her face. Before she could speak, the woman beside her couldn't help but defend her. "That theory doesn't work. Why would anyone deliberately make their own boyfriend sleep with another woman? They were so in love back then, how could she possibly do that?"
"Why not?" Ophelia's tone was calm and logical.
"I heard Ms. Morgan went abroad after the breakup, and not long after, news came out that she had a new boyfriend - a rich kid, no less. Isn't it possible that Ms. Morgan already had her next relationship lined up, but didn't want to break up directly? So she set it up to make her boyfriend sleep with another woman, giving her an excuse to break up while still looking good in front of everyone."
Hearing this, Jessica nearly dropped her wine glass. Luckily, she caught it in time, though some wine still spilled on her shoes.
When Freya had told her about what happened before, Ophelia had noticed many inconsistencies, so she went to ask William. This rich kid detail was something she confirmed with William.
Jessica was already somewhat famous back then, and the media had exposed her new boyfriend. But media reports could be true or false, making them hard to verify. William's information was different - if he said it, it had to be true.
Those guesses Ophelia just made were actually what William had told her personally. At the time, she was curious why William hadn't told Timothy about all this.
William had said, "Timothy was blinded by love. He won't believe anything without evidence, and besides, he liked Jessica so much back then, he naturally sided with her."
The matter didn't really concern William anyway, so he never brought it up again.
Judging from Jessica's reaction now, William's guess back then seemed to be true.
Jessica felt awkward. After a long silence, she finally looked up to meet Ophelia's gaze, forcing a smile.
"Mrs. White, you need evidence when you speak and act. You're just making wild guesses to smear me?"
Ophelia acted surprised. "Oh, so you know you need evidence? Then just now, when you had no evidence at all but were so certain Freya drugged him - how come when I make guesses about you, you don't believe it?"
Everyone was left speechless by Ophelia's words. Jessica was still thinking about how to respond when she suddenly saw a figure at the door, and tears immediately fell.
"Freya, I don't know what you told Mrs. White, but it's been so long. I wasn't planning to bring it up again - why can't you let it go? I already gave him to you, do you really need to embarrass me in front of everyone?"
Timothy walked in right at that moment and heard Jessica's tearful voice.
Before he could ask what happened, Jessica had already grabbed her coat and bag from the sofa and run out crying. As she passed Timothy, she looked up at him, tears streaming down her face even harder.
