Chapter 40: The Second Trial
Lyra's red eyes glowed in the darkness as her body grew larger, her silver hair turning into thick fur. The chamber shook around them.
"What's happening?" Luna cried, grabbing Ash's arm.
"The second trial begins," Lyra growled, her voice deeper and more animal-like. "You think you understand connection? Then prove it."
The floor beneath them suddenly split open. Kai felt themselves falling again, but this time they could see the others falling too—in five different directions.
Kai landed hard on stone ground. Alone again. But this time, they were in a vast cave with glowing crystals on the walls. Far in the distance, they could see four other caves, each with one of their friends.
"Rowan!" Kai shouted. Their voice echoed, but Rowan didn't seem to hear.
Lyra appeared between the caves, now fully changed into a massive wolf with silver fur and those same blood-red eyes.
"The second trial tests your bond," she revealed. "You believe in connection? Then stay connected as I pull you apart."
With a howl, Lyra stomped her paw. The ground shook, and Kai watched in horror as the caves started to move away from each other.
"No!" Kai cried. They tried to run toward Rowan's cave, but an invisible wall blocked their way.
"You cannot move physically," Lyra explained. "Only your minds can reach each other now."
Kai pressed their hands against the unseen wall. "Rowan! Can you hear me?"
In his cave, Rowan was doing the same. He could see Kai but couldn't hear their words.
"Remember the mate bond," Lyra said. "If your connection is real, distance won't matter."
Kai closed their eyes, focusing on the silver thread they had felt linking them to Rowan. It was still there, but fainter now.
Rowan, Kai thought. Can you hear me?
No answer came.
The caves continued to move apart. Soon, Kai could barely see the others in the distance.
"The trial has begun," Lyra announced. "You must all find your way back to the center, guided only by your bond. But beware—not all connections are what they seem."
Suddenly, a thick fog filled Kai's cave. When it cleared, Rowan was standing in front of them.
"Kai! I found a way through!" Rowan said, holding out his hand.
Kai's heart leaped with joy. They reached for Rowan's hand—but stopped just before touching it.
Something felt wrong. The silver thread connecting them to the real Rowan was pointing in the opposite way.
"You're not Rowan," Kai said, stepping back.
The fake Rowan smiled, then turned into Fenrir. "Smart little wolf," he hissed. "But are you smart enough to find your way back without help?"
Fenrir vanished in another cloud of fog. Kai was alone again, but now they understood the true nature of the trial.
"It's not just about staying connected," Kai realized. "It's about trusting the right connections."
Kai closed their eyes again, focusing on the silver threads. They could feel all four—the strongest leading to Rowan, and three others linking to Luna, Ash, and Eira.
Rowan, Kai thought again. Follow our bond. Don't trust what you see.
Miles away, in his cave, Rowan was facing a fake Kai who was asking for help. The real Kai's message floated into his thoughts like a whisper.
Don't trust what you see, it said.
Rowan stepped away from the fake Kai. "You're not real," he said strongly.
The fake Kai disappeared, and Rowan smiled. I hear you, Kai, he thought back. I'll follow our bond.
Kai felt Rowan's reaction like a warm touch. They smiled, then reached out to the others.
Luna, Ash, Eira—can you hear me? Follow the silver lines. Don't trust your eyes.
One by one, they heard replies. Faint at first, then louder.
I hear you, Kai, came Luna's voice.
We're with you, Ash added.
I can feel the bond, Eira stated.
But as they tried to follow their links, Lyra made the trial harder. The holes grew darker. Strange noises echoed through the tunnels. More false images appeared—people they loved in trouble, begging for help.
"Don't be fooled," Kai told themselves. "Trust only the bond."
The silver threads grew dimmer as the caves moved farther apart. Kai focused harder, pushing their awareness along the bond toward Rowan.
Suddenly, they could see through Rowan's eyes. He was following a faint silver path on the ground, going toward a distant light.
I can see through your eyes, Kai thought to him.
And I through yours, Rowan answered, surprised.
An thought struck Kai. If we can see through each other's eyes, maybe we can help each other.
Together, they made a mental map, sharing what each could see. Luna, Ash, and Eira joined in, adding their views.
"They're working together," Lyra growled from somewhere in the darkness. "Let's see how they handle this."
The ground began to shake furiously. Cracks emerged in the floor of Kai's cave. Behind them, the tunnel collapsed, leaving only one road forward—but it led away from the others.
"Choose," Lyra's voice boomed. "Save yourself or risk everything for your bond."
Kai didn't pause. They turned away from the safe path and walked toward the collapsing part of the cave, following the silver thread.
"What are you doing?" Lyra asked.
"Trusting my bond," Kai answered.
In their thoughts, they could feel the others making the same choice. All five of them were walking toward danger, guided only by their link to each other.
As Kai reached the edge of a deep crack in the floor, they stopped. The gap was too wide to jump.
Now what? they thought.
Jump, came Rowan's voice. I'll catch you.
But you're not here, Kai replied, confused.
Trust the bond, all four of their friends said at once.
Kai took a deep breath and jumped across the gap. For a moment, they fell through darkness. Then strong hands caught them—Rowan's hands.
Somehow, they were all together in a new room. The five of them stood in a circle, still holding hands.
"You passed the second trial," Lyra said, appearing before them in her human form again. "You trusted your bond even when your eyes told you something different."
"Is that it?" Luna asked. "Is the second trial over?"
"Not quite," Lyra said with a small smile. "The true test of your bond is yet to come."
The room filled with a blinding light. When it faded, Kai gasped in fear.
Fenrir stood before them—the real Fenrir, not an illusion. And beside him was Thorne's ghost.
"We followed your bond too," Fenrir said with a wicked smile. "Thank you for leading us right to the First Wolf's power."
Behind them, a new door appeared, glowing with dark energy.
"The third trial awaits," Lyra revealed. "But now you must face it with unwelcome guests."
Thorne's ghost turned to Kai. "Grandchild," he said coldly. "It's time to fulfill your destiny—my way."
