Chapter 93: Sudden Attack
"Drew showed up in Oceancrest City?"
Henry jumped up to make a call, his eyes drifting to the glass window. For some reason, he couldn't help but stare at someone sitting outside.
This person had their back to the window, and Henry couldn't even see their face, but he felt a sense of danger. His gut was never wrong.
Without a second thought, Henry lunged towards Olivia.
Olivia sensed Henry's movement, turned her head, and saw him rushing towards her with a tense expression. Instinctively, she pulled Layla to the ground.
With a loud crash, Olivia, lying on the ground, heard the sound of shattering glass. The large window exploded into fragments, and Henry lay on top of her, shielding her from the falling shards.
The next moment, the shooter tried to rush in, but gunfire erupted from behind.
Henry shielded Olivia and whispered, "Watch her, stay here and don't move. I'll handle this! Olivia, don't let anyone see your face!"
With that, Henry quickly got up and rushed outside.
Olivia also stood up, watching Henry leap out through the broken window. She wanted to follow, but Henry's words echoed in her ears, so she stayed put.
"Henry, be careful!" Olivia said, trying to lower her voice.
It was only after Olivia got up from the ground that she looked at Layla. Without Henry's protection, Layla's face and neck were injured by glass shards, leaving her looking quite miserable with blood all over her face.
"Call an ambulance!" Olivia shouted to the café staff. They quickly called for an ambulance and also reported the incident to the police.
Olivia took out her phone to make a call, but an incoming call interrupted her. Seeing the number, her heart trembled. Without hesitation, she answered.
"Olivia, so your name is Olivia!" The person on the other end laughed.
That eerie laugh was all too familiar to her.
Her heart raced. She never expected to hear this person's laugh again.
"Drew, long time no see. So you're still a coward, hiding in the shadows and shooting, just like eight years ago." Her voice was calm, as if chatting with an old friend.
"I will catch you. I will cut the flesh off your body, piece by piece, just like I did with the other cops," Drew said.
Such threats might have worked on Olivia eight years ago, but now, they had no effect on her.
"Let's see, but you'll have to catch me first. Why don't you come out, and we'll see who catches whom?" Olivia smirked and hung up.
From a psychological perspective, Olivia had achieved her goal. To destroy someone, you must first drive them insane.
Olivia understood that someone like Drew, who had always been hiding in the shadows, hunted for years, losing everything, and chased by both gangs and the police, would have a deeply twisted mental state. Otherwise, he wouldn't have risked coming to Oceancrest City.
Moreover, Drew's purpose wasn't to kill Olivia but to make her aware of his presence and instill fear in her, which was no longer possible.
The chaos in the café attracted nearby police officers who were in a meeting. Parker felt relieved when he saw her.
"Olivia, are you hurt?" Parker asked.
Olivia shook her head. "Henry saved me. We're fine. But that journalist Layla is hurt! She followed us out earlier, and we came to this café because she said she saw Drew at the airport a few days ago!"
If it weren't for that, Olivia and Henry wouldn't have come here. Olivia had already noticed something off about Layla.
"Parker, Layla's been taken to the hospital. I suggest you have her blood tested," Olivia said.
Parker nodded and made a call. An assassination attempt during a conference was a major oversight for the Oceancrest City police.
Henry and his team chased Drew, who cleverly got into a car as soon as he exited the building. It seemed he had planned everything. They chased the vehicle to the outskirts of Oceancrest City, but the suspects had vanished.
"Mr. Phillips, it seems they had this planned all along. I'll continue the pursuit. This matter is more complicated than it appears," one of Henry's subordinates said.
Henry knew it wasn't simple. Given Drew's cunning, his appearance in front of Olivia was no coincidence.
Meanwhile, Olivia was at the hospital. When she saw Layla's test results, her expression turned cold. She handed the report to the nearby Oceancrest City police officers, who looked equally frustrated.
"This journalist is a drug user. Unbelievable! Where are the organizers? How could you let someone like this slip through at such a serious event? Representatives from a third of the world's countries are here, and this is the result? Ridiculous!" Oceancrest City Police Chief Leonard Edwards fumed.
He fired the head of security and ordered a thorough overhaul of the Oceancrest City police force. Olivia wasn't interested in the police department's internal affairs; she was more curious about Layla. Why would a beautiful, high-earning foreign journalist turn to drugs?
As Olivia sat by Layla's hospital bed, Layla remained unusually calm.
"Nothing you want to say to me?" Olivia asked. Layla looked up at her, eyes filled with hatred.
"Why does he protect you so much?" Layla asked.
Olivia smiled, her already striking face becoming even more radiant. "Maybe because I'm prettier than you."
Olivia's smile almost made Layla's blood boil. She glared at Olivia but quickly masked her expression.
"I've heard him mention you. Eight years ago, when you were in his hands, weren't you begging like a dog?" Layla sneered.
Olivia raised an eyebrow. Layla knowing about events from eight years ago was interesting.
"It seems you've been by his side for more than just a year or two. Ms. Cole, do you know what you're facing?" Olivia asked. Layla laughed, her expression turning arrogant.
"I'm not from Novaria. You have no right to deal with me!"
Olivia nodded. As a foreigner, Layla did have some protections, but only for non-criminal cases. Layla had committed a serious crime, so there was no escape.
"You may not understand Novaria's laws, but surely you know what kind of person Drew is. He's a demon, the most notorious drug dealer internationally. His crimes are punishable by death in any country, and you are his accomplice! Ms. Cole, don't delude yourself into thinking you can escape justice. You have no way out now!"
