Chapter 15

The Path to Justice

Days passed with no breakthrough in Sana’s case. The layers of bureaucracy and corruption seemed to stretch endlessly before Vedika, leaving her feeling small and impotent against a system she had always believed she could change. Her attempts to gather evidence were stonewalled at every turn, the police uncooperative and the public too afraid to speak out.

Sana’s story hung over Vedika like a thick fog. She couldn’t give up on the girl. Not after all the courage it took for Sana to step forward. But with every passing day, it felt as though the walls were closing in tighter, and every door she knocked on was slammed shut.

After weeks of frustration and dead ends, Vedika knew what she had to do. She had to go higher. The local authorities, the police — they weren’t interested in justice. But if she could get a breakthrough with someone who had the power to cut through the red tape, perhaps she could still help Sana.

With determination steeling her resolve, Vedika decided to take the case to the SP (Superintendent of Police) — someone she hoped could provide a fresh perspective and the resources she needed to force the police to do their job.

She walked into the SP’s office early that morning, her thoughts a jumble of both fear and hope. As she stepped into the corridor, her heart skipped a beat when she saw the nameplate on the door:

SP Pranav Singh.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Pranav Singh?

It had been years since she last heard that name. Pranav, her college friend, the one she had shared long hours of study with, laughed with, and confided in during their days in law school. He was brilliant, dedicated, and ambitious. After they graduated, he had taken the police route, rising through the ranks quickly. She had heard that he moved to a different city, and now he was the SP of their own city?

A strange mix of nostalgia and unease washed over her as she pushed open the door and entered.

“Vedika Sharma?” a voice called from behind the desk.

There he was, sitting behind a sleek, modern desk. His dark eyes, framed by the same confident smile she remembered, locked onto her instantly. Pranav Singh, now an officer with authority, a man whose determination matched her own in their student days.

“Vedika… it’s been too long,” he said, standing up and walking over to greet her.

“Pranav,” she responded, almost automatically. Her gaze softened as she saw the familiar warmth in his eyes. “I didn’t know you were back. And I didn’t know you had… well, this position.”

He smiled, a little awkwardly. “I should have told you. But life gets busy, doesn’t it?”

“I guess it does,” she murmured, then steeled herself. “I need your help, Kabir. It’s… it’s about a case. A young girl, sexually assaulted. The police have been giving us the runaround. I need someone who can break through the red tape.”

Pranav’s smile faded. His face grew serious as he nodded, gesturing for her to sit.

“I’ll do whatever I can, Vedika. You know that,” he said, his voice steady. “Tell me everything. We’ll find a way.”

Meanwhile, across the city, Abhimaan Rathod’s day unfolded in his usual world of power and dominance. His empire had grown exponentially, and the Rathod Tower project was beginning to take shape. Meetings, negotiations, and strategic moves filled his hours, all moving according to his unyielding will.

But in the back of his mind, there was a thought he couldn’t shake. A nagging, persistent thought that he had come to know all too well. Vedika Sharma.

It had been a week since the courtroom, and despite his victory, a strange disturbance lingered in his mind. The way she had walked out of the courtroom without even acknowledging him — it bothered him more than he was willing to admit.

She had always been confrontational, fiery, and passionate — yet she had ignored him, as if he no longer mattered.

For a man like Abhimaan, not being acknowledged was a rarity. It was something he wasn’t used to. His world revolved around control, dominance, and attention. Every glance, every word — it was always on his terms. Yet Vedika had bypassed him completely, her cold indifference like a slap to his face.

That night, as he sat alone in his study, the thoughts swirled.

“Why does she keep doing this?” he muttered to himself, his jaw tightening. “Why does she refuse to break?”

⸻

The next day, Vedika was walking out of the courthouse, her mind still processing her meeting with Pranav. He had promised to look into the case, but she knew it would take time. He had connections, but so did the people she was up against. However, her brief meeting with him had reminded her that some things hadn’t changed. He was still the same Pranav — honest, determined, and willing to help.

She walked briskly down the courthouse steps, her thoughts absorbed in the case, when she almost bumped into someone.

Looking up, she froze.

Abhimaan Rathod.

He was standing there, his tall, imposing figure blocking her way, a small, amused smile playing at the corners of his lips. His eyes, dark and calculating, met hers with a mix of challenge and curiosity.

“Still fighting for justice, Vedika?” he said, his voice smooth as always. “I thought you’d be wiser by now, considering how well the last battle went for you.”

Vedika’s breath hitched, but she refused to let him see any hint of vulnerability. She didn’t speak, didn’t acknowledge his provocation. Instead, she lifted her chin and turned slightly, moving past him without a word.

Abhimaan’s smile faltered for a brief moment as she brushed by him. He hadn’t expected this. She wasn’t looking at him, wasn’t responding to his taunts, wasn’t even acknowledging his presence. It unsettled him, in a way that nothing else ever had.

His gaze followed her as she walked away, her posture straight and unyielding. There was something about her indifference that gnawed at him, something that stirred a long-buried discomfort.

“You think you can just ignore me, Vedika?” he muttered under his breath, almost to himself. “You’ll have to face me again… eventually.”

But Vedika didn’t stop. She didn’t turn around. She simply kept walking, moving further away from him with every step, leaving Abhimaan standing alone on the steps of the courthouse, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts he couldn’t quite understand.

⸻

As Vedika continued on her path, the weight of everything that had happened and everything that still lay ahead pressed heavily on her shoulders. But there was a small glimmer of hope now — a small sliver of light in the darkness. Kabir was going to help. She had not lost everything. Not yet.

And somewhere deep inside her, the ember of her determination burned brighter.

Abhimaan Rathod might think he had won the last battle. But Vedika Sharma was just getting started.
