Chapter 137
Breaking the Chains
The air in the penthouse was suffocating. The weight of the past few days had pressed down on Claire like a thousand-ton boulder. Despite the luxury surrounding her—an opulent building in the heart of the city, towering views from the windows, designer furniture and rare art lining the walls—Claire felt trapped.
She’d been sitting in her study for hours, her fingers hovering over the keyboard, but the words wouldn’t come. She had drafted so many letters, emails, and statements, but nothing seemed to be enough. The fight against Victor was taking its toll, and despite the press conferences, the legal countersuits, and Adrian’s promises, Claire could feel herself slipping—slipping back into a place she’d fought so hard to escape.
The door creaked open, and she didn’t need to look up to know who it was. His presence filled the room in an instant. Adrian.
He didn’t speak at first, just stood in the doorway watching her. Claire met his eyes—those cold, impenetrable eyes that she used to find so intimidating but had come to trust more than her own instincts. She’d never wanted this life—the spotlight, the media circus, the constant sense of being hunted—but she was in it now. And there was no turning back.
“What happened today?” she asked, her voice softer than she intended.
Adrian’s gaze hardened, and for a moment, she saw that familiar flicker of anger—dark and consuming. “We’ve made a breakthrough,” he said, stepping into the room and sitting across from her at the desk. “The AG is going to issue a subpoena for Victor’s financials. It’s a matter of time before he’s arrested. But we need to move quickly. He’s not going to go down without a fight.”
Claire swallowed hard, her stomach twisting. “And what about us? What about the media? The smear campaign? What happens if—”
Adrian cut her off. “We fight back. We always have.” His voice was steady, but his eyes betrayed a hint of the tension simmering beneath. He was as much on edge as she was.
She exhaled shakily, leaning back in the chair. “I hate this,” she confessed, more to herself than to him. “I hate feeling like a target.”
Adrian’s expression softened for a fleeting moment before it hardened again. “Victor has made a grave mistake in underestimating you. Underestimating us. We’ll take him down, Claire. Together.”
For a second, she allowed herself to believe him—to believe that maybe, just maybe, they could emerge victorious in the end. But the uncertainty of what came next—the lingering threat of Victor’s manipulation, his underhanded tactics, the weight of their public personas—it felt too much. Claire had been through so much already, and the idea of it all being ripped away again terrified her.
Adrian reached over, placing a firm hand on hers, grounding her in the moment. “We will not let him win. Not after everything we’ve fought for. Not after everything we’ve sacrificed.”
His words were like a lifeline, pulling her back from the edge of despair. She took a deep breath, nodding. “You’re right,” she whispered. “We’ve come this far. We won’t let him take everything from us now.”
The Battle Rages On
The next few days passed in a blur of meetings, legal briefs, and quiet moments of contemplation. Claire spent most of her time in the penthouse, coordinating with Adrian’s team, reviewing every document, every shred of evidence they had against Victor. It was all becoming more and more personal.
Victor wasn’t just attacking Adrian’s empire—he was going after Claire, after everything she’d built. He wanted to destroy her reputation, tear down everything that had once made her strong.
But Adrian was right—Victor had underestimated them. Claire could feel it now, the simmering anger turning into resolve. She wasn’t going to let this man ruin her. Not again.
Adrian’s plan was clear. They would hit Victor where it hurt most—his empire. There was a meeting scheduled with the board of Carter Industries the following week, and Adrian would be leading the charge. His contacts in the financial world had already begun to unravel Victor’s dirty secrets, but they needed more. They needed the smoking gun.
That was where Claire came in.
The First Strike
As the day of the meeting drew closer, Claire found herself sitting in the backseat of the car, staring out the window at the rapidly changing cityscape. Adrian sat beside her, his fingers absently tapping on his phone, sending messages to his team. His focus was unwavering, as always, but Claire could see the strain in his posture. She could feel it, too.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, snapping her back to reality. It was a text from Daniel.
“Everything’s in place. Tomorrow’s the day. We make our move.”
Claire typed a quick reply: “Understood.”
The car pulled up to the entrance of a luxury hotel, and Claire’s pulse quickened. This was it. Tomorrow, they would face Victor head-on, and everything would change.
Adrian turned to her, catching her eye. “You ready?”
She nodded, her nerves tightening. “I have to be.”
Confronting the Past
The next day, they arrived at the meeting with Victor’s board of directors. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. Victor wasn’t there, but his presence loomed over the room, like a storm waiting to break. Claire could feel his eyes on her even though he wasn’t physically present—his threats, his manipulations, everything he’d ever done to break her.
But she wasn’t broken anymore.
Adrian stood at the head of the table, his eyes locked on the members of the board. “We know about the illegal activities you’ve been involved in,” he said, his voice sharp and cutting. “We’ve gathered the evidence, and we will be taking it to the authorities if necessary. But I’m giving you one chance to do the right thing. Step down. Walk away while you still can.”
The room was silent, and Claire’s heart pounded in her chest. This was it—the moment they either won or lost. She glanced at Adrian, who was calm, collected—unshaken.
Then, one of the board members spoke, his voice trembling. “What if we refuse? What will you do?”
Adrian’s lips curled into a cold smile. “You won’t refuse. Not when you realize what’s at stake.”
The meeting dragged on for hours, but Claire never wavered. The documents were presented, the evidence laid bare. By the time they left, Adrian’s grip on Carter Industries was all but guaranteed. Victor was outmatched, and they knew it.
The Endgame
Back at the penthouse, Claire sat alone, her thoughts racing. Adrian had left to handle final negotiations with the board, but Claire knew the fight was far from over. Victor was still dangerous, and he wouldn’t go down without a fight. But they had the upper hand now, and she had something even more powerful than revenge—control.
The phone on her desk buzzed.
It was a message from Adrian.
“It’s done. Victor’s finished.”
Claire let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. The battle was far from over, but for the first time in months, she felt like she was finally breathing again.
