Chapter 60 CHAPTER 60
My heart leapt into my throat and I ran downstairs, terrified.
"Did anyone see my phone?" I asked, struggling to not show the trembling in my voice.
"No," Uncle John said, "you should ask your Aunt. She was in your room the other day."
Shit! Shit!
My worst fears have come to pass.
I know I said I'll tell Naomi everything again but not so soon, I'm not ready for all of the drama before that part.
I found her in the dining, eating.
My heart rate was clearly telling everyone that I was guilty of something so I tried to make my voice cooperate.
"Did you see my phone?"
She swallowed before shaking her head.
"Ask Tori."
"Why would she be in my room? Don't I have any privacy in this house?"
"Watch your tone, young lady. Your phone kept ringing and disturbing the house. We have sensitive hearing so I don't know why your volume is that high."
"Sorry," I whispered, scratching my neck.
"She's on her way to the Pack house so you'll have to wait for her to get back."
"Can't I get it from her room?"
"If you feel like dealing with her temper tantrum, go for it. Somebody should have warned me about raising teenagers," she muttered under her breath.
Defeated, I went back upstairs to wait.
Gosh, it was torture.
I ate, bathed twice and counted all the shapes on the ceiling in an attempt to call myself but not only was I worried she'd found out about Naomi and probably my chat with Fabian, something tells me she didn't tell Aunt Kelly anything because she wanted to blackmail me.
I realise now that I'm not a patient person.
When she finally got back late at night, I was at her door before she got to the top of the stairs.
"You need something?"
"My phone."
"Oh yeah, my bad. I forgot to give it to you. You should turn the volume down, okay?"
"Yeah, I will now."
I waited, my heart in my chest as she went inside, praying she didn't find a way to get into it.
She handed it over to me with a smile.
I took it and began walking out when she called my name.
I paused, wishing the ground would swallow me right this second.
It didn't, so I had to turn around.
"Are you good though?"
"Um," I cleared my throat, "yeah, I'm fine."
"Okay. Because if you're not, you can talk to me. Or Edgar, I know he's a better cousin than I am," she added with a smile.
"Sure. Thanks."
I fled before she could say anything else.
I opened the phone to fifty missed calls from Naomi.
Nothing from Fabian.
Just the last message he sent that I didn't reply to.
Nerves and all.
Something told me he'd assumed the distance had ruined things and then focused on his own life but I still sent him a hi text, just in case.
Then I texted Naomi.
{SERA TIANA VOSS! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!}
{AND DON'T TELL ME NOT TO USE CAPS, I WANT TO SCREAM IN YOUR FACE BUT I CAN'T SUCK IT UP!}
{WHY AREN'T YOU ANSWERING ME!}
{Hey Naomi, and I love you too.}
{Don't change the topic you sly wench!}
{Wench? In 2026}
{That's what you get for disappearing into thin air with such a vague explanation. Was it a wolf thing that you're not allowed to tell me?}
{I'm not allowed to tell you ANY wolf thing}
{Smart ass. But seriously, what's happening? Are you okay? Be real with me, okay?}
I sighed and looked away from the phone.
The past two weeks, since that first kill, I've been running on autopilot. Like a robot, programmed with a mission and nothing else.
Being that I'm a being of emotions, it's strange to have it all locked away except this need for someone that I don't even know if they'll be okay with this world and the other one that wants me dead.
{I'm going to be. Hopefully}
{You don't sound good. And I understand you can't tell me everything, this is already a lot of trust you have in me but please, if you ever need to not talk, we can sit down and not talk together. Maybe crying, or singing. You hate my voice though.}
{Not always. Just avoid the screaming ones🙃}
{Oh look! She learnt how to use an emoji}
{Alright bye, I'll see you in school tomorrow}
{Yaay! You're having lunch with me, I don't care what you and Mr Fabian have going on but he's going to stay in his office and you and I will go have lunch like old times!}
{Wait, when was the last time you saw him?}
{On Friday. Why?}
Everything cloudy, dark, hazy, cleared away and sunshine and rainbows replaced them all.
As if summoned by his name, his reply came in.
{He just texted me now. I'll talk to you tomorrow and yes, I'll have lunch with you and no one else.}
{I knew you loved me🤭}
I shook my head, smiling as I opened his text.
{Where have you been, love?}
Now what do I tell him?
Naomi has proven to me that I'm terrible at lying.
{I lost my phone but I got a new one. How are you?}
{Where have you been?}
Damn, that didn't work.
"Are you shocked? You are behaving like you haven't been in this world longer than I," Sabrina scolded me.
And yes, she's back to wiggling her tail and not growling like a hungry canine friend.
"I don't know what to say!"
"Tell him you had an accident."
"Jeez, I'm scared of you."
"I actually get the job done, unlike you."
I shook my head but typed the lie.
{Let me come and get you. I want to see you.}
Yeah, that's not happening.
{Sorry, my aunt is strict. But hey, I heard you came back?}
{Yes. I was sad you were not around.}
Ladies and gentlemen, I rolled around on my bed and smiled like a deranged lady.
He missed me!
{See you tomorrow?}
{Yes.}
For the first time in a while, I slept peacefully.
