Chapter 29: Chapter twenty nine
I woke up rested, ready for the day. I didn't know why I felt so free, like the weight on my shoulders was transferred to someone else.
I showered, got dressed and then made my breakfast. I had toast, put on butter, fried my eggs sunny side, put vegetarian sausages and then made coffee. The breakfast was the best I ever had, and it was all because of the good mood I found myself under.
After breakfast, I called my lawyer, Samuel, who was more than happy to get started on the divorce proceedings. I didn't blame him for being happy. I've been making the man start the proceedings, then made him cancel too many times.
This time, I assured him that I was going ahead with the divorce. It must have been something in my voice that told him I was serious and there was nothing going to change my mind.
I was not needed at work until midday, so I had time to kill. I put on my jacket, grabbed my wallet and car keys, then headed out.
I didn't think my mood would be ruined until I ran into Finley. He was coming out of the elevator after it opened.
I stopped, not knowing what I should say to him.
In the end, when he saw me, his eyes widened, then he hurried past me. The panic in his eyes made me question why he reacted like that to me.
"Wait, Finley! Please!"
"I don't want any trouble, Leon. So please leave me alone."
I grabbed his arm, but he snatched it away. "Please, Finley." I begged.
He sighed, but the fear was still in his eyes.
He nodded, which prompted me to follow him into his apartment.
I've never been into his apartment before, but when I stepped into it, it felt familiar. I felt like I've come many times, which was weird because I've never. "Your place is nice," I commented.
He turned around, his eyebrows raised. "What do you mean? You've always complained about my lack of taste and you tried to convince me to change the theme. I didn't change it. It is still the same."
"I've never been into your apartment before," I clarified, crossing my arms as I felt cornered.
"You're the one who gifted me that rug as a joke. You thought it was the ugliest, so it would match my place," he said, not even smiling.
"Maybe I forgot," I told him, rubbing my arms because I felt put on the spot. It was not fun when everyone knew everything around you, and you didn't even remember.
"What happened to you, Leon? After you've been back, you've not been the same. I admit that guy that keeps on coming to your place scares me shitless, but you're weird now. Don't tell me you've been made to forget your memories."
I didn't reply because I didn't know anything these days.
"Don't tell Drew is really a vampire and he made you forget your memories. I was right all along! I bet he found out about our suspicions and that's why he threatened me because I opened your eyes and you got curious. That would explain everything, Leon. And don't tell me he kidnapped you and erased your memories. He did, didn't he?"
When I still kept quiet, he shook me, too close for my liking. "It's true, isn't it? That's why you can't remember shit, Leon."
I was panicking inside, not knowing how to react. What if he was right? What if Drew erased my memories because he wss a vampire like Finley was claiming?
I started to become scared because everything was just a mess. I didn't remember shit, and everyone around me kept on saying things I didn't understand, but surely happened.
What was happening to me to believe that my husband was a vampire?
Surely I was going mad to even entertain these thoughts.
"I think of going to your place so that we can look for clues again. Do you still have the spare keys? Last time you went, you got sidetracked and couldn't find enough evidence except that picture, which wouldn't convince you that it was true Drew was a vampire. So next time I'm going with you."
I was still dumbfounded, not believing anything or disputing anything Finely was saying.
How could I when I didn't know right from wrong, reality form imagination.
"I had a flashback when I was at his office. I saw him throw a plate over my head."
That set off Finely. He punched the air, as if abuse was an exciting matter.
"I didn't mean it like that, Leon. I meant that proved he erased your memories, but that clearly didn't work because you remember. How did you remember?
I shrugged, saying, "He raised his voice and I just remembered."
"That means we should involve those kinds of feelings from him so that he can yell, lash out or be excited and you can remember more. What else did you do?
"I didn't do much. Thank you Finley for all the information, but I need to go somewhere now."
"It's fine, Leon. I'm just glad you are coming back to me since he kept us away from each other. I'm so glad you are back, Leon."
I laughed, my good mood coming back. "I'm just glad that I got you back too, Finley."
"What will you do in the meantime then? Where are you going?"
"I'm going to the shops."
After that, I left. Even though I didn't remember Finley, I had a feeling he was telling the truth and we did know each other. I was so happy to be reunited with him.
It was actually very much appreciated that he could overlook everything Drew did to him and become my friend again.
I was still a bit skeptical about the vampire thing, but at least it was a start. I was convinced that someone was wrong with me since I've been losing memories, and it was dumb to think the only logical reason was Drew wiping my memories since he was a vampire instead of a medical reason.
My therapist will have a blast with the new development around my life. At least it will keep her entertained on our next session. And maybe you never know, she'll validate my reasons. She was young enough to entertain the ideas.
