Chapter 244: Linus Had an Accident
She thought everything would turn out for the better, but in the middle of a meeting, Olivia suddenly received a call from the nursing home. The caregiver's voice on the other end sounded panicked. "Madam, bad news, bad news! Linus is in trouble!"
Olivia's heart tightened, a chill spreading through her body as if her blood had frozen. "What happened? What's wrong with Linus?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Is he unwell?"
"He... fell in the nursing home garden and passed out. The doctors are attending to him now. Please come quick!" The caregiver's voice was choked with sobs.
"Okay, okay, I'm coming right now!" Olivia hung up, completely forgetting about the meeting. She got up immediately, rushed out of the conference room, and told her assistant to drive her to the nursing home as fast as possible.
On the way, her thoughts were in chaos, her hands trembling uncontrollably. Images of Linus filled her mind. She couldn't bear the thought of loosing him. He'd always supported her, loved her and Leo so much. If anything happened to him, she'd never forgive herself.
Noticing her distress, the assistant tried to reassure her while driving. "Madam, please don't worry too much. Linus will be fine—he's got good luck on his side, and the doctors will do anything they can to save him."
Olivia nodded, but the fear inside her didn't ease in the slightest. She kept praying in her heart for Linus to be okay, for him to wake up soon.
They soon arrived at the nursing home. Olivia rushed in and headed straight for the emergency room. Linus's caregiver was standing at the door, face pale white, tears streaming down nonstop.
Olivia grabbed the caregiver's hand, her voice tight with urgency. "How's Linus? How's the rescue going? Why did he fall?"
At the sight of her, the caregiver broke down even harder, her voice shaking with guilt. "Madam, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry... it's my fault—I didn't watch him carefully enough. Linus got up this morning and said he wanted to walk in the garden. I went with him, but after just a few steps, he slipped and fell. He hit the back of his head on a rock and lost consciousness right away. I called the doctor immediately—they're treating him now. I don't know... I don't know if he'll wake up."
"He slipped?" Olivia frowned. "Isn't the garden path pretty flat? How did he slip? Did something cause him to trip?"
The caregiver shook her head, crying harder. "No... nothing tripped him. He just lost his footing and fell. It's all my fault—I didn't hold him steady. If I'd held him better, he wouldn't have fallen."
Seeing the caregiver overwhelmed with guilt, Olivia felt a surge of anxiety and anger, but she knew this wasn't the moment to place blame. Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to stay calm. "Don't blame yourself." she said gently. "It's not your fault. No one wanted this to happen. Right now, we just have to wait for the doctor and see how Linus is doing."
The caregiver nodded, still wiping away her tears. Olivia stood at the emergency room door, her heart pounding with worry, each passing second stretching unbearably long.
She pulled out her phone, called Emma to look after Luca and Leo. Then she instructed her assistant to head back to the company, handle group affairs, and contact her if anything came up.
About an hour later, the emergency room door finally opened. The doctor came out, looking tired and a bit serious.
Olivia rushed over, gripping his hand tightly, her voice trembling with urgency. "Doctor, how's Linus? Is he awake?"
The doctor exhaled slowly before answering. "Madam, please try to stay calm. We've done all we can. Linus has no immediate life threat, but the severe impact to the back of his head has caused a stroke. He's currently in a coma. Whether or not he regains consciousness depends on his recovery. We will continue to do everything possible."
"A stroke?" Olivia's vision went black, and she nearly collapsed. "Doctor, will Linus... will he be okay? When will he wake up?"
The doctor's expression didn't soften. "We can't say for sure. Our priority is to stabilize him and monitor how his condition develops."
Olivia felt a chill spread through her body, as if all the warmth had been drained from her. Before she could recover, hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the nursing home hallway.
Several uniformed police officers walked straight toward her, faces stern. "Are you Olivia?" one of them asked firmly. Someone reported you for suspected intentional injury and elder abuse. You'll need to come with us for questioning."
Olivia's eyes widened in disbelief. "What? You think I hurt Linus? That's impossible!"
At that moment, the caregiver who'd been crying suddenly rushed forward and dropped to her knees with a heavy thud. She kowtowed to the police while sobbing. "Officers, I'll tell you everything... It was Olivia who forced me. She told me to delay Linus's medication and to deliberately wet the garden path so he would slip and fall. I didn't want to do it, but she threatened me.. I had no choice..."
Everyone froze.
Olivia went pale, her body shaking uncontrollably. "You're lying! I never told you to do anything like that! Why are you framing me?"
"I'm not lying!" The caregiver wailed, digging into her pocket with shaking hands. She pulled out stack of crumpled notes and printed bank transfer slips. "These are the notes she wrote to me! And the money transfers—she sent them secretly! The proof is all here!"
A wave of murmur immediately spread through the hallway. Staff members, shareholders, and a few relatives who had gathered outside the ICU began exchanging uneasy glances and whispers.
"I never thought she'd be like this. Linus treated her so well, and she does this."
"Attacking even Linus for power. Scary."
"No wonder she rushed to be acting president. It was all planned out."
Olivia shook with rage, unable to defend herself.
Just then, a cold laugh came from the back of the crowd. A young man in a suit with a gloomy face stepped forward slowly. It was Liam.
He crossed his arms, looking righteous. "Olivia, I knew you had bad intentions." Liam said coldly. "Taking over the group wasn't enough—you went after Linus too. Vettel is a family business. No outsider like you gets to harm us! The evidence is clear now. What do you have to say?"
He waved his hand, and someone behind him pulled out a stack of fake documents. "These prove you misused company funds and secretly transferred assets." Liam declared. "Everyone can see it—you wanted to swallow up all of Vettel."
A police officer stepped forward, his expression stern. "Based on the evidence presented, you will need to come with us for further investigation."
As the police moved to take her away, the main door was forcefully pushed open from outside.
In the backlight, a tall, familiar figure slowly appeared at the doorway.
"Who dares to take Olivia away?"
