Chapter 74
*Jayden*
I was in the office when I saw my phone ring and the number was Selspur's biggest hospital. I wondered who was calling and why.
"Hello," I said tentatively.
"Jayden, there has been an accident and Brian is in hospital," I heard Olga's voice over the phone. "You should come as soon as possible."
"I am on my way," I said and hung up.
Frankie happened to enter my office at that moment and she saw the look on my face.
"What happened?" she asked me putting down the file in her hand.
"It is Brian he is injured and I don't know what happened, that was Olga."
"Then let us go," She said urgently. I shook my head and told her to stay behind and continue running the office.
"I will update you as soon as possible. Also I want you to inform Lorraine, but not my parents at the moment."
I rushed outside and found Dave waiting, the car door opened and he was ready to drive out as soon as I got in. Frankie had told him already and he drove quickly to the hospital.
I jumped out of the car and rushed to the reception.
"Where is he? What happened?" I asked at the reception.
The receptionist tried to calm me down first and asked me to fill out some forms. I filled out the details quickly as they already had my details as well as Brian's in their files.
"Let me get the doctor who is treating him, have a seat please," she said kindly pointing to the seat. That was when I saw Olga sitting on one of them with a worried look on her face.
"What happened?"
"He had a tumble down the stairs leading to the basement, he was on his tablet," Olga said sadly. "I don't think he is badly injured but the doctor hasn't been out yet."
I wanted to ask how the hell Brian fell down the stairs when he had never done when a male doctor walked up to us. We both stood up and waited for him to speak.
"Hello, Mr. Grey. I'm Doctor Jones, the orthopaedist who treated your son Brian." He introduced himself.
"Hi, doctor. How is he doing? Is he going to be okay?" Iasked fearing for the worst. The doctor explained his injuries to me and assured me they weren't grave. All he needed was a few nights at the hospital.
I asked him if I could see Brian.
"Of course, please follow me," he said and we walked behind him as he led us to the room where Brian was. "He is in here. He might be a bit groggy from the painkillers and mild sedatives, but he'll be happy to see you. He was still asleep a while back."
"Thank you again, I appreciate your help." I said.
"You are very welcome, Mr. Grey. I know Brian will recover very quickly and fast."
We both entered the room and I went to his side and stroked his face.
I heard Olga say, "Well at least he is out of the woods and not in danger."
Brian opened his eyes and groaned slightly, "Dad?"
"Yes, kiddo I am here, how are you feeling?" I said kneeling to his level.
"Like a truck hit me. Not that I know how that feels," Brian joked and I laughed stroking his cheek.
"Olga here told me what happened, you could have just told me you want a rollercoaster installed at home," I joked back. Brian gave a small smile.
"I will be back, let me call Frankie and tell her," Jayden said standing up. "She was worried and wanted to come but I told her to wait. Lorraine too will come and see you."
I stepped out and called Frankie who picked it before the first ring was over. I told her his condition and she sighed. She said she would pass by after work with my sister.
I saw Doctor Jones and I hung up and approached him. I volunteered to give Brian blood but he declined. He told me there was no need to give Brian a transfusion.
"Are you sure he doesn't need blood?" I insisted. "I am ready to donate my blood for him."
"I assure you he doesn't need blood but I will not refuse you from donating if you want to," the doctor assured him and started leading him to a different room "I will get a nurse to come over."
I waited and presently a nurse entered the room. "I will take a small sample first to screen you before I draw blood," she said. I nodded as I knew the drill. I rolled up my sleeve and she pierced my skin and drew blood in the syringe. She left and I went back to be beside Brian.
A short while Doctor Jones entered the room holding a clipboard. He told me to follow him outside.
"Mr, Grey, have you traveled recently?" I was asked as I followed him. "Or do you suffer from any gastrointestinal issues?"
"Yes, I have traveled, I mean. As for having gastrointestinal issues I have none," I replied and we turned right before entering an unoccupied ward.
"That explains the motion sickness drug in your bloodstream. I take it, you traveled a few hours ago?"
I frowned, shaking my head, "Yes I traveled but that was on Monday."
"Well sometimes the drug remains in the bloodstream for a few days," he suggested.
"True as that may be, I never suffer from motion sickness, I am not Natsu. So no, I don't take any drugs for travel."
I now saw the doctor frown and he looked at his report and then back at me, "The report from your blood sample flashed like a Christmas light on scopolamine. That's not only it, your previous blood test a few days back also had traces of the drug in minute quantities."
"The only substance I use is alcohol and that is in moderation," I told him shocked. "You are telling me that my blood has a drug in it?"
"Scopolamine, used to treat motion sickness."
I frowned and said, "Isn't that the same drug that is also known as Devil's Breath or chimichanga?"
The doctor chuckled, "You mean burundanga. Yes it is the same drug so you are aware of my insinuations."
I remained silent and had an idea what he meant. I don't remember being out of it except for… I stopped thinking and looked out. There was one instance.
Lorraine and Frankie passed by to see Brian and he was happy to see them. Frankie left after unsuccessfully trying to get me to go home.
I woke up feeling stiff after having spent the night in Brian's room on the chair. One of the nurses had given me a blanket from my suite to cover me. I let out a big yawn and got a whiff of my morning breath.
My next destination was the suite where I took a long hot shower and brushed my teeth. Frankie would come later in the day with a fresh change of clothes for me. I went back down to the ground floor and I was surprised to see the door to Brian's room open and even more shocked to see Sierra stroking his head.
"Sierra," I called out.
She looked around to see me. I went to her and she hugged me tightly.
"How did this happen?" she asked but her voice wasn't accusatory.
I told her what I had been told by Olga and the doctor.
"Brian isn't clumsy, you and I both know that," she said defiantly.
"Here is your coffee, sorry the vending machines don't have peppermint tea," a voice said behind me.
I turned to see the young man from Seasbury having two cups in his hand. Sierra took the cup from his hand and I frowned slightly. What was he doing here?
"Llewellyn accompanied me to Selspur as soon as I heard," she answered my unasked question.
"It was either that or she would have come alone, she was threatening to leave immediately," Llewellyn added. "I couldn't let her travel all alone from Seasbury that night."
"Wait, you came in the night bus?" I asked. I knew there was no train that left Seasbury past nine pm.
"Come on, both of you," I said and I led them to the suite that I owned on the rooftop. As usual my pantry was stocked with everything I needed and I found a luxurious brand of teabags and brewed her peppermint tea.
"What about you Llewellyn, what would you like?" I asked him as I handed Sierra the hot cup of tea. But he shook his head stating that he was fine with the hospital coffee.
There was a quiet knock on the door and a housekeeper entered pushing a trolley laden with food and pastries. She placed the covered plates on the table and then put the cart aside and left, stating she would return in half an hour.
"I took the liberty of ordering food," I told them both and invited them to eat. Sierra was the first one to start eating. Llewellyn was a little held back but after a few minutes he too served himself.
I was ruminating on what Sierra had said about Brian not being clumsy. Brian had never been to hospital because of external injuries. He also knew the house too well to slip and fall downstairs and finally, I have never seen Brian using the tablet when walking.
Something else that was bugging me was what the doctor had told me yesterday, my blood for the last two visits had been declined because of the drugs in it.
"Brian will be okay," Sierra's voice broke through my thoughts.
I looked at her and realized they were both staring at me worriedly, "Yes he will but I am thinking about something else. What do you know about Scopolamine?"
"Isn't that the drug used for motion sickness as well as postoperative nausea known as hyoscine?" It was Llewellyn who piped up. "What about it?"
"What else can you tell me about it?"
"Well it is used to commit crimes by some people. It is used as a hallucinogen to control people as well as in robberies and sexual assault."
I looked up and happened to lock eyes with Sierra at those words. I guess the same thing was running in our minds.
"Is it easily procurable on the street?" she asked.
"Well with the right connections it can be got on the street and over the counter too. I know this because I had instances of it being used in the college I attended. Most were using it to get high and stuff but a few cases were discovered where both men and women were sexually assaulted. Personally I have never tried using it in either a medical or recreational setting so I can't speak from experience."
We finished up and went back down to Brian's room but he was still sleeping. I found out later that he was given a mild sedative as he had woken up and started to cry about the pain.
Doctor Jones reassured us it was nothing to worry about. Frankie came and delivered the fresh set of clothes. When she saw Sierra she smiled and hugged her. She was the first lady I had Frankie hug in a very long time who wasn't a family member.
She was also warmly received by Lorraine and I saw her whisper something to Sierra who nodded and smiled. Throughout the day quite a number of people came including Nala who was heartbroken and blamed herself saying hadn't she gone to train he wouldn't have hurt himself. She cheered up though when she saw Sierra and the two talked in earnest. Cynthia also passed by and she too was happy to see Sierra. Dave also sneaked in to see Brian. Brian was sedated throughout the day so he never saw any of his visitors.
When it was evening, I approached Sierra when she was finally alone.
"Do you have a place to stay?" I asked her.
I saw her face change as she remembered that she hadn't booked a hotel room.
"You will use the penthouse suite at The Enchanted Gardens,"I told her. "No you aren't refusing."
She sighed and looked at Llewellyn, "So I share a room with him?"
There is no way I was going to let those two share a room. "Fine then I will give you separate rooms. I have already organized with Frankie, I am sure Lisa or Mirabel will be happy to have you around."
"Llewellyn was it?" I called out to the man. "I have arranged accommodation in the finest hotel in the city. My driver will take you there."
Sierra humphed and marched away and I couldn't help but smile. I had one-upped her by informing her colleague and now she couldn't refuse.
"Don't try anything funny with her," I warned as he passed me following her.
He turned and faced me, "Until I see a ring on her fingers no man is going to scare me away."
Before I could say anything else he left.
I will pass by and see if I can talk to Sierra.
