Chapter 60: Daniel Escaped

After Bert brought it up, Betty suddenly remembered that Mia really couldn't stand Vera.

Betty said, "But your dad said to drop it."

Bert replied, "We're just talking, nothing serious, and Grandma Mia found out."

Catching Bert's hint right away, Betty hesitated, but seeing Bert with his leg in a cast, she made a decision.

Betty said firmly, "I'm heading over there right now."

When Mia got the call, she was almost fuming. She wasn't big on the internet and wasn't up-to-date with trends.

After searching online and finding nothing, it wasn't until Betty sent over some saved news screenshots that Mia was left speechless.

Mia thought, 'There's no way that wretch Vera can marry Arnold. Even if I have issues with Arnold, I wouldn't stand for it, no way.'

She had to stop this before it went any further.

"Keep an eye on Vera!" Mia instructed her trusted aide over the phone.

As long as David didn't catch on.

While soothing Charles to sleep, Vera returned to her room and found Arnold leaning against the bed, holding a book.

Vera asked, "Isn't your bed bigger than mine?"

This room was clearly a guest room, nothing like Arnold's.

"Why don't you switch to my room?" Arnold suggested.

Vera shook her head. "No."

As she lay on the bed, Arnold set the book aside. "How do you plan to handle your foster father?"

Vera's eyes showed determination. "I want to ensure he rots in prison for life."

Arnold stayed quiet for a moment. "I can offer you some help."

The next day, Vera met the two men Arnold had mentioned. They looked tough, more like mobsters ready for action than regular guys.

Before Vera could finish explaining, the tattooed bald man said, "So you want to frame him?"

Vera said, "Daniel used to gamble and now he's hooked on drugs, spending all his cash on them. But if we set him up, he'll end up owing money again."

The plan was simple; once Daniel was in debt, he'd come looking for her. Since she had left the company and was just a shareholder now, he wouldn't find her. Victor would handle it, resorting to illegal means, ensuring he'd end up back behind bars.

The two exchanged a look. The bald man wanted to say they didn't need to go through all this trouble; just scare Daniel for a night, and he'd disappear on his own.

Vera was too soft-hearted, but that was to be expected. She didn't live the same cutthroat life as they did.

The bald man said, "We'll take care of this smoothly, we have our ways."

Vera thought, 'That simplified things.'

"Thanks."

Exiting the shabby phone shop, Vera spotted Arnold by the door, chatting with a woman. Feeling a twinge of jealousy, she hurried over to Arnold. "Let's go."

Arnold glanced up, ignoring the woman beside him. "Is it done?"

Vera nodded. "Yes. Let's head back, Charles is waiting."

The woman hitting on Arnold seemed invisible, making Vera uneasy. She lowered her head and walked away.

"You seem quite the catch," Vera blurted out.

"Ms. Garcia, are you feeling a bit envious?" Arnold teased.

"Envious? Not a chance," Vera denied, her ears turning red, betraying her.

Arnold chose not to speak further, giving Vera the room Ivor had referred to.

A new message on his phone detailed Vera's conversation with that two men. Arnold frowned after reading it; maybe he had been too soft.

He replied: [No need to hold back. It's best if he never crosses paths with Vera again.]

People like Daniel were societal toxins, unlikely to change their ways. Dealing with him once and for all was the best solution.

The past online incidents were now untraceable, almost erased.

Surprisingly, there was no news of Daniel causing trouble at the company. With no need to go to the office these days, Vera spent time at home with Charles, enjoying some free time.

Arnold had been occupied lately.

In the afternoon, while out getting pastries for Charles, Vera got a call from Arnold. "Where are you?"

Vera replied, "Out shopping for Charles."

"Come home immediately," Arnold's tone was grave.

"What's up?" Vera had never heard Arnold so serious.

Arnold explained, "Daniel was caught smuggling drugs at the border, but the escort vehicle crashed, and he's on the run. Just come home for now."

Each word from Arnold hit Vera hard.

Daniel was a coward, maybe involved in street drugs, but caught smuggling at the border was serious.

Arnold said, "Vera?"

"I'm on my way, heading home now!" Vera replied.

If that scumbag Daniel escaped, he'd come after her first. Who knew what he was capable of.

After the call, a figure in black blocked Vera's path, and Mia, looking elegant, stepped forward. "Let's talk, Vera Garcia."
