Chapter 76: Ambition is Great
Julian's stomach had never been great, but back then it was just a gastric ulcer. It could only turn into cancer if he didn't take proper care of it.
So I cooked him different nutritious meals every day, and finally managed to get his stomach almost back to normal.
Then Layla started hanging around him all the time, always eating foods that irritated his stomach with him.
I reminded him to watch his diet, but he just snapped at me to mind my own business.
It wasn't until a year ago that I stopped caring about his health.
Cancer doesn't develop overnight - it takes at least three to five years, sometimes over ten years.
It's only been a year, so how could it have progressed to stage two stomach cancer so quickly? Not to mention kidney failure on top of that.
If we hadn't caught it this time, if we'd found out any later, he might not even have had a chance for surgery.
Now that I think about it, Layla often brought him spicy food. Was this an accident or some kind of coincidence?
I was so disgusted by the two of them constantly hanging out together that I never paid attention to what they were actually doing or eating when they were together.
But how could someone so young develop kidney failure?
If the condition progresses to late stage, he'll only be able to stay alive through weekly dialysis.
Could this be what they call karma?
Gabriel looked at me and said, "No one else knows about this report yet. What do you want to do about it?"
Was he actually asking for my opinion?
Was this really not some kind of test?
Although I knew Gabriel wouldn't hurt me, I had this vague feeling that his attitude toward Julian seemed somehow different, so I didn't dare take any risks.
"Gabriel, what are you thinking?"
If we didn't release this report, if we switched Julian's test results with something minor to keep him in the dark, we'd just need to let his condition keep getting worse. I wouldn't even need to do anything myself.
Once the cancer reached stage four and the kidney failure became terminal, no one would be able to save him!
That should be the best approach. Even if the police came knocking, they probably wouldn't find anything - they'd just treat it as an accident.
Thinking about having these thoughts made me feel pretty ironic.
Julian, this man who once obsessed me, who I deeply loved, who caused me pain, who I came to hate with every fiber of my being - now his life or death seemed so insignificant to me.
Gabriel's deep eyes looked at me calmly. "I'll submit the report and let him get treatment."
Of course, Gabriel had never thought about hurting Julian.
It made sense that he'd want to help his nephew. After all, they were family - he couldn't just watch Julian die.
A flash of disappointment crossed my heart, but I understood that Gabriel's choice fit his usual way of doing things.
He might be cold, but he wasn't without principles.
Whether it was Anastasia before or Samantha now, they really didn't have much to do with him.
The fact that he wasn't exposing my thoughts was already the best outcome for me.
Gabriel added, "Maybe this isn't the result you were hoping for, but I have my own things I need to do."
I looked at him with some confusion. His earlier words seemed like he was on my side, so why had his attitude changed now?
I'd always thought Gabriel wasn't someone who changed his mind easily. If he was saying this, he must have his reasons.
I nodded. "Okay, I understand."
"About the auto repair shop you mentioned, I'll send someone to investigate."
"Thank you. You should get some rest."
He looked at my face, seeming like he wanted to say something, but ultimately swallowed it back. "Okay, good night."
I lay on the soft bed, carefully thinking through everything about Layla.
What exactly was she trying to do? To marry into the Westbrook family, she'd even taken desperate risks, not caring about her reputation at all.
Even if it meant marrying into the Westbrook family while pregnant, she didn't care what kind of terrible reputation she'd have.
She was so smart - she could have just waited a bit longer, waited until people forgot about my death, married Julian in a year or two.
Maybe by then she could have even earned herself a good reputation, and no one would have questioned her.
Now she was in such a rush to marry into the Westbrook family - wasn't that basically telling everyone she'd been scheming with Julian all along?
For such a smart woman to be so reckless, that could only mean what she wanted was more important than her reputation!
Before, I thought Layla just liked my man and wanted to steal Julian away.
Now it seemed her ambition was huge. Besides the Torres family fortune, she was probably also after the Westbrook family's wealth.
She'd sped up her pace, so I needed to hurry up and find evidence to bring her to justice!
The next morning, Julian's test report was released.
Julian had been in stomach pain all night and couldn't sleep. He looked completely exhausted.
When he heard he had cancer and kidney failure, his body went soft and he nearly slid off the sofa.
Lloyd was also scared pale by the news.
Julian was his only son. If something happened to Julian, what would he do?
"Isn't there some mistake? Julian's so young, how could he have kidney failure? Check him again carefully!"
The family doctor pushed up his glasses, his expression serious.
"Mr. Westbrook, please rest assured, I personally verified the report. All indicators were rechecked three times with consistent results. There's no error."
Lloyd slumped in his chair.
Julian looked like all his strength had been drained away. He stared blankly at the ceiling, mumbling, "Impossible, how could this happen."
"But Julian, you don't need to be too nervous. The condition is still in its early stage, still within a controllable range."
The doctor's words were like a shot of adrenaline, making the previously desperate Julian suddenly look up.
He asked urgently, "Early stage? You mean I can still be saved, right? It can be cured, can't it?"
"Yes."
The family doctor nodded, explaining in a steady tone, "The affected area isn't too extensive. Through surgery to remove the lesion, as long as you cooperate with follow-up treatment and take good care of yourself, if you get through the five-year danger period and don't have a recurrence, you'll be fine."
Only then did Julian breathe a sigh of relief.
"Okay, I'll definitely cooperate with treatment!"
But Lloyd suddenly asked a question: "Dr. Adams, will his kidney failure affect his ability to have children?"
