Chapter 107
When Evelyn walked out of the banquet hall with the documents in hand, her entire body seemed to relax.
She hadn't carefully checked what loopholes might exist in those papers, nor had she chosen to trust Imogen's character.
She was simply swallowing her pride temporarily for the sake of her own goals.
But just as she was about to leave the banquet hall, Benjamin's appearance disrupted her plans.
She didn't know when he'd appeared at the entrance, and she certainly hadn't noticed when he'd left the banquet hall.
Even less clear was why he would block her path.
"Mr. White, what's the matter?"
Benjamin didn't respond to her question. Instead, he lowered his gaze to the documents in her hand.
"What kind of deal did you make with Imogen?"
Evelyn understood he'd misunderstood, but she had no desire to explain.
She tilted her head to look at him, her eyes unmistakably full of provocation. "Is that any of your business?"
She was covered in thorns, especially when facing Benjamin—she wanted nothing more than to wrap herself up like a hedgehog.
"Mr. White, today is your sweetheart's birthday party. I'm sure if this party was arranged so elaborately, it must be for a very important reason. If you're not there, she'll definitely be heartbroken. So I suggest you hurry up and let me pass, then get back in there yourself. Don't ruin her big day."
She admitted there was mockery in her tone as she said this, a certain sarcasm, but so what?
After all, they were the ones who'd wronged her first. Why shouldn't she strike back?
"Oh, sorry. I suppose in all these years, no one's ever spoken to you in this tone, have they? Well, you'll just have to bear with it. After all, I'm pretty frustrated myself right now and don't have the energy to coddle you."
Evelyn finished speaking and tried to walk around him, but Benjamin didn't give her that opportunity, blocking her path once more.
"Are you throwing a tantrum at me?"
Evelyn just felt annoyed. "First of all, I'm not throwing a tantrum at you. Second, I really do have something to take care of and need to leave. I can't keep wasting time here with you."
Her phone rang just then. Benjamin looked down at her, suddenly remembering that provocative phone call from before, and let out a mocking laugh.
"It's that man, isn't it?"
When he spoke, it was with certainty rather than any hint of question.
Evelyn had no idea how he'd suddenly connected these two things, but she'd truly run out of patience.
"You have someone you like, and I have someone I like. So the two of us not interfering with each other—isn't that the best outcome?"
She paused, then gave a mocking smile. When she spoke again, her tone was laced with barbs, every one of them aimed squarely at Benjamin.
"You were the one who said it—the two of us don't have any feelings for each other. Right now, we're just torturing each other."
As her words fell, Evelyn raised her hand and patted Benjamin's shoulder with an air of earnest concern, then turned and left.
This time, Benjamin didn't forcibly detain her.
Only after Evelyn got in her car and drove away did Benjamin finally look away.
Raymond appeared at his side at some point, following his line of sight. "Benjamin, can you really not see it? Whenever Evelyn is around, your eyes have been on her from the very beginning. You might not have noticed it yourself, but I don't think the person in your heart is Amelia."
This was such an obvious thing—he believed Benjamin wasn't an idiot and would slowly realize it himself. But as his friend, he was afraid that by the time Benjamin understood his own feelings, it would all be too late.
Benjamin said nothing. All that floated through his mind was Evelyn's appearance just now—the disappointment in her eyes mixed with other complex emotions, all laid out before him.
But even if she didn't like him, so what?
He was Benjamin.
There would never be a shortage of women around him.
Besides, he didn't care about any of this.
"There's no need. Between her and me, this is really the only possibility left."
Finishing his words, Benjamin turned to look at Raymond, his eyes perfectly sober and calm.
"What about you, though? Didn't you come here today to find someone? What happened—didn't you run into the person you were looking for?"
Raymond opened his mouth, hesitating before finally managing only one sentence. "I guess the timing wasn't right."
This was the first time Benjamin had seen him like this. He was about to say something when a voice suddenly came from behind.
"Benjamin?"
The voice wasn't unfamiliar.
Benjamin and Raymond both turned toward the sound to see Ainsley standing not far away in a white gown, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on Benjamin.
Ever since that incident last time, Ainsley hadn't set foot in Silverlight City for quite a while.
Though Quentin had previously treated their family quite well, once his interests were threatened, any feelings would be trampled underfoot.
He couldn't control Evelyn, so all his focus had shifted to getting Amelia married into the White family and extracting massive benefits from it.
Ainsley's intentions and goals happened to collide with his.
In that situation, he would unhesitatingly discard this piece that could have become a pawn under his control.
Ainsley's gaze first roamed over Benjamin, then shifted more of her attention to Raymond.
In the past, Silverlight City had three famous bachelors, all at the level of eligible billionaires.
The first, without question, was naturally Benjamin—though he was married now.
The second was Samuel, but his private life was somewhat chaotic. He was also known throughout their circle as a playboy, and with the Harris family's complicated situation, whether he could successfully take control was still an unknown.
The third was Raymond—from a medical dynasty, legitimately inheriting the hospital, friends with both Benjamin and Samuel, gentle and courteous with people. He could be said to be many girls' dream man, meeting every standard for an ideal partner.
The moment he sensed her gaze, Raymond couldn't help but twitch the corner of his mouth.
He'd lived over twenty years and had experienced this kind of look countless times. Of course he knew what it represented.
Moreover, he'd heard about the things that had happened with the Taylor family and knew that the girl before him was Amelia's cousin—two people who had previously both set their sights on Benjamin.
Having someone like that lock her gaze on him made a trace of disgust rise in his heart.
"Benjamin, it's getting late. I'm heading out. If anything comes up, let me know later."
With that, Raymond turned and left.
Only after his figure had completely disappeared from the entrance did Ainsley finally withdraw her gaze and turn to look at Benjamin.
