Chapter 83
Kaedan's POV
"I don't want to take it slow anymore." The words hit me like a physical blow, and I went completely still. The plate in my hands might as well have been made of lead.
"What do you mean?" I managed to ask, though my voice sounded foreign to my own ears.
She moved closer, and I could feel frost forming on my fingertips—ice magic responding to the spike of hope and terror warring in my chest.
"This past week, watching you with Gregory," she said, reaching for my hands, "seeing how you respect his pace and my pace, how you support without controlling... I realized something."
Her shadows wrapped around my fingers, and the contrast between her warmth and my ice made me shiver.
"What?" The word came out as barely a whisper.
"I realized I'm tired of being scared." The words came out in a rush, like she had to say them before she lost courage. "Scared of wanting this too much, scared of what happens if I let myself need someone again."
Jesus Christ.
I couldn't breathe. Literally could not draw air into my lungs as the meaning of her words sank in.
"I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop," she continued, her voice shaking slightly. "Keep expecting you to get tired of waiting, or to go back to making decisions for me, or..." She stopped, swallowing hard.
"Or what?"
"Or for me to fuck this up by running again."
"Nephele..." Her name broke apart in my throat.
Ice crept up my arms, responding to the intensity of emotion I couldn't control.
"I don't want to run anymore," she said, stepping closer. "I don't want to pretend I don't miss you every second you're not here. But I'm still scared as hell."
"Are you serious?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Really serious? Because I can't... I can't handle hoping for this and then losing it again."
"I'm serious." She looked directly into my eyes. "I'm terrified, but I'm serious."
That's when something inside me snapped.
"Christ, Nephele." I pulled her against me so hard she gasped, my arms wrapping around her like she might disappear if I didn't hold tight enough.
"I love you so much it scares me. I've been so afraid to hope for too much, afraid to push too hard..."
"You don't have to be afraid anymore." Her hands came up to cup my face, and the gentle touch nearly undid me. "I want this. I want you. Not because of what we're supposed to be, but because of who you are. Because I can't stand the thought of going back to how things were."
I kissed her then—not the careful, restrained kisses we'd been sharing, but something desperate and claiming and full of months of held-back emotion.
This was her wanting me. Not because of fate or bonds or what anyone expected.
Just me.
Through our bond, I felt her certainty, her determination. This wasn't impulse or desperation—this was Nephele making a decision and meaning it.
When we finally broke apart, both breathing hard, I searched her face.
"Nephele," I said carefully, "I need you to know something."
"What?"
"I'm going to mess this up sometimes. I'm going to slip back into old patterns, try to protect you from things you can handle yourself." I forced myself to be honest. "This isn't going to be perfect."
She studied my face, and I saw something relax in her expression. "Good," she said. "Perfect would terrify me."
"Good?"
"Perfect would mean one of us is lying." A small smile tugged at her lips. "I'm going to panic sometimes. About this, about us, about whether I'm making a huge mistake."
"And when you do?"
"When I do, I need you to remember that it doesn't mean I don't want this. It just means I'm scared."
The honesty in her admission made something settle in my chest. This was the real Nephele - brave enough to try, honest enough to admit her fears.
"So we're both going to fuck this up sometimes," I said.
"Probably spectacularly," she agreed.
"And we're doing it anyway?"
"We're doing it anyway."
Nephele's POV
When he kissed me this time, it wasn't desperate or claiming. It was wondering, almost reverent, like he couldn't quite believe this was real.
His ice magic surged in response to his emotions, creating delicate frost patterns on my skin that melted instantly under his touch. My shadows wrapped around us both, not possessive but protective, creating a cocoon of darkness that felt safe and intimate.
"Are you sure?" he asked against my lips, and I could feel the restraint it was costing him to check.
The question should have made me hesitate, should have triggered all my old fears about being controlled or pushed. Instead, it made me fall a little more in love with him.
"I'm sure," I said, pulling him closer. "I'm scared, but I'm sure."
"We can stop anytime," he said, his hands gentle on my face. "If you need space, if this feels like too much..."
"Kaedan." I pressed my forehead against his. "Stop being so perfect. It's making me nervous."
He laughed, and the sound broke some of the tension between us. "Sorry. I'm just... I don't want to fuck this up."
"You won't," I said, then paused. "And if you do, we'll figure it out."
We barely made it to my bedroom, both of us breathing hard, the air thick with the scent of arousal that had been building for weeks.
The need I'd been fighting finally had permission to exist, hitting us hard and fast.
Every careful boundary we'd maintained disappeared in seconds, leaving nothing but urgent hands and heated skin.
His hands found the hem of my shirt, yanking it over my head. The cold from his magic was a stark contrast as his fingers brushed my nipples, making them instantly harden.
His hands were cold from his ice magic, but they warmed quickly against my skin, leaving trails of melted frost that made me shiver.
"Tell me what you want," he said against my neck, his voice rough.
"You," I said back, my shadows wrapping around him, pulling him closer until I could feel his hard cock pressing against me through his pants. "All of you."
My words served as both entreaty and command, my wolf rising to meet his as I moved against him, feeling his heat. The bond between us resonated with approval, our wolves acknowledging what we had denied ourselves too long.
