Chapter 340 James's Fate
Chapter 340 James's Fate
Chloe Morgan's POV
I had a crazy day at the office, and things were getting pretty complicated.
But when I took a closer look at how Liam was operating, it was clear he was using some sneaky tactics. We were out in the open while he was lurking in the shadows. If I played it straight, we'd be evenly matched.
I wasn't too worried about Liam striking back. The projects he swiped could just as easily be reclaimed.
It's all about going toe-to-toe, and I'm not one to back down.
After work, I decided to head back to the Morgan Villa to check on James. His health hasn't been great lately.
I figured since I had already taken care of what he asked me to do, visiting him might put his mind at ease.
When I reached the front door, I noticed the fallen leaves hadn't been swept away in ages.
I knew James was lying in bed, seriously ill and without anyone to care for him.
His current state was a far cry from his once vigorous and commanding presence.
But I didn't feel sorry for him. Ever since Mary left, James had driven away all the household staff.
He hired part-time help for cooking, which was cheap and practical, but they couldn't provide consistent care.
After all, with such low pay, who would want to stick around?
Looking at James's living quarters, it was clear they were no longer the same. The place was rundown and chaotic.
The only upside was the peace and quiet, since the part-time help only came during the day and left at night.
If he felt unwell at night, there was no one to care for him.
He lay in bed, eyes open, staring at me with a serious expression.
I smiled and said, "James, why do this to yourself? Isn't it bad for your health? Having someone to care for you would make things easier."
James replied, "I don't want anyone in the house who could be bought off. I've been burned too many times before, and it's hard to recover from that. I don't want to gamble on this again, so this arrangement might be the best outcome."
I didn't understand what he meant by the best outcome. I just wanted to tell him,
"If you hadn't done things the way you did, maybe it wouldn't be like this."
He didn't respond, just stared silently at the ceiling.
I noticed his face was flushed, and his speech was slurred. Realizing something was wrong, I walked over and saw the thermometer indicating a high fever.
"You didn't mention you had a fever?"
James just nodded, his emotions flickering in his eyes, lost in thought.
I called a doctor to give him an IV and prescribed medication. I even helped prepare the medicine and fed it to him spoonful by spoonful.
By the middle of the night, his fever finally broke, and I felt relieved.
Taking care of an elderly person is indeed exhausting.
But I had no choice. With no one else to care for him, I couldn't just leave him to suffer.
James's condition required constant monitoring, so I hired a family doctor. The doctor seemed puzzled, "Why is there only one person living in this house? Doesn't anyone clean?"
I felt a bit cold-hearted, thinking maybe this was James's fate.
I instructed the family doctor, "Say what needs to be said, but don't ask unnecessary questions."
I asked the doctor to keep an eye on James to prevent another fever or cold.
After paying the doctor, James suddenly called my name.
I paused, looking at him. He gazed at me with worried, confused eyes.
"If you're going to go up against Liam, it might be troublesome. You need to be careful."
I've heard this countless times. It seems everyone says the same thing. I wanted to laugh but held back.
After all, I couldn't accomplish as much as Dominic, nor did I have his level of execution. I just nodded slowly and said to James, "Don't worry."
"I have Dominic."
James was silent for a moment before speaking, "He can protect you, but he can't watch over you all the time. You need to be careful."
I thought about the project and told him, "Liam's been up to a lot of shady stuff. As long as I counter him openly, he can't do anything to us. Besides, those projects weren't his to begin with."
James seemed pleased, "If you can handle it, that's great. I was worried everything would be ruined by Liam, which would be a real shame."
Well, for now, it was uncertain, but I needed to go.
I exchanged a glance with the family doctor and said, "Take care of him."
Then I dragged my tired body out the door, leaving the Morgan Villa, feeling a bit more relaxed.
When I got home, Dominic wasn't there.
He was gone, and I had no idea where he went. Lila was sitting at home, looking like she'd been waiting for me.
Lila explained calmly, "Chloe, there's urgent business with the gang, so Mr. Voss had to go. I hope you don't mind. He has a lot to handle, and if you can't help, he has to do it himself."
I chuckled to myself, thinking, "How much help can I really be? Maybe just a little."
Lila nodded, "It's good you understand. We're all in this together. Mr. Voss, as the gang leader, has to handle many things personally."
I offered her some snacks and expressed my understanding, "I know you're all busy with daily missions. I can't stop him from going."
Lila looked at me gratefully, "It's great that you understand."
I was still uneasy about last night's events and wanted to ask Lila.
"What was Liam up to last night? Why did Dominic get hurt while everyone else was fine?"
Lila's eyes darkened, as if recalling something. After a moment, she said, "Last night's operation was rushed. I couldn't follow. Lucas said the deal was already done, and it was a rainy night, with poor visibility."
"Mr. Voss was determined and chased Liam. Liam set him up, leading him to a cliff. Dominic almost fell but managed to stop and fought with them. They realized Mr. Voss didn't have what Liam wanted, so they left. Otherwise, Dominic would have been dead."
Lila sighed, "Mr. Voss was lucky. Otherwise, last night could have been fatal."
I felt worried hearing this.
I was amazed by Dominic's courage, "He chased them alone, not afraid of danger."
Lila agreed, "Yes, if he had called for backup, he might not have been hurt."
But I thought about the situation. If Dominic hadn't gone quickly, the chance to track Liam would have been lost.
The more I thought about it, the more worried I became about Dominic.
If something happened to him, what would I do?
