Chapter 24: A Shocking Confession
Eliza sat on the edge of the campus fountain, her eyes locked on the rippling water as she absentmindedly traced the stone rim with her fingers. The cool autumn air wrapped around her, and she shivered slightly, though she wasn’t sure if it was from the cold or the dread settling in her stomach. She had asked her best friend, Sarah—not her stepmother, but her closest confidante from school—to meet her here. After weeks of carrying the weight of her secrets, the burden had become too much to bear alone. She needed to talk to someone, even though the thought of saying it all out loud terrified her.
“El!” Sarah called, her voice breaking through Eliza’s spiraling thoughts. She appeared around the corner, her dark curls bouncing as she jogged over. “You sounded serious in your text. What’s going on?”
Eliza forced a smile, though it barely reached her eyes. “Hey. Thanks for coming.”
Sarah sat beside her, the smile on her face fading as she studied Eliza’s tense posture and distant expression. “You don’t look so good. Is everything okay?”
Eliza let out a long breath, the familiar knot of anxiety tightening in her chest. She had been dreading this moment ever since she sent the message, but now that Sarah was here, the reality of what she was about to confess hit her full force. Her stomach churned with nerves, and for a second, she considered backing out. But she couldn’t keep running from this. Not anymore.
“I… I need to tell you something,” Eliza began, her voice trembling slightly. “Something I haven’t told anyone.”
Sarah’s brow furrowed in concern, her eyes searching Eliza’s face. “What is it? You know you can tell me anything.”
Eliza nodded, though the words still felt stuck in her throat. She took a deep breath, gathering her courage before finally speaking. “I’ve been… I’ve been involved in something complicated. Really complicated.”
Sarah’s eyes widened slightly, and she shifted closer, her expression a mixture of curiosity and worry. “What do you mean? Is it about Alex?”
Eliza’s heart ached at the mention of his name, and the guilt she had been carrying for weeks surged to the surface. “Partly,” she admitted, her voice thick with emotion. “Things with Alex have been falling apart for a while now, and I haven’t been honest with him. Or with myself.”
Sarah frowned, her concern deepening. “Honest about what? El, you’re scaring me.”
Eliza swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she forced herself to meet Sarah’s gaze. “I… I’ve been seeing someone else. Not in a relationship, but… there’s someone else I’ve been drawn to. And it’s not just anyone, Sarah. It’s my professor.”
Sarah blinked, her eyes widening in shock. For a moment, she didn’t speak, the weight of Eliza’s confession hanging heavy in the air. “Wait… what?” she finally said, her voice a mix of disbelief and confusion. “You’re involved with Professor James?”
Eliza nodded, her heart racing. “I didn’t mean for it to happen, but… it did. It’s not like we’re together or anything, but we… we crossed a line. And now everything’s a mess.”
Sarah stared at her, her mouth slightly open in shock. “Eliza, that’s… I mean, that’s not just complicated. That’s—” She paused, struggling to find the right words. “How did this even happen?”
Eliza felt tears prick at her eyes as she explained, her voice barely above a whisper. “It started out with him just being supportive, you know? He always believed in my writing, and he made me feel seen. But then… things got blurry. I kissed him, Sarah. And now, I don’t know how to stop everything from spiraling out of control.”
Sarah let out a long breath, clearly trying to process what she had just heard. “Eliza, I… I don’t even know what to say. This is so much.” She rubbed her forehead, her expression filled with concern. “Does Alex know? About Professor James?”
Eliza shook her head, guilt swelling inside her again. “No. He knows something’s wrong, but I couldn’t tell him about this. I already hurt him enough. And now I’m caught between everything—between my feelings for Alex, the connection I have with Professor James, and all the guilt and confusion swirling around me.”
Sarah was silent for a moment, her eyes dark with worry. “El, this is serious. You’re in a really complicated situation with someone who has a lot of power over you. Have you talked to anyone about this? I mean, anyone who could help?”
Eliza shook her head again, tears finally spilling over. “I don’t know what to do, Sarah. I’m so confused. I don’t even know how I got here. One minute I was just his student, and the next, everything feels so tangled up. And now I’ve lost Alex, and I’ve crossed a line with my professor, and I don’t know how to fix any of it.”
Sarah’s expression softened, and she reached out to take Eliza’s hand, squeezing it gently. “I’m so sorry you’re going through this,” she said quietly. “But, El, you need to get out of this situation with Professor James. Whatever connection you think you have with him, it’s not healthy. He’s in a position of power, and you’re vulnerable right now. It’s not your fault that things got blurred, but you need to protect yourself.”
Eliza wiped at her eyes, her chest tightening with the weight of Sarah’s words. She knew her friend was right, deep down, but the pull she felt toward Professor James—the way he made her feel understood, seen—was so hard to let go of. “I don’t know how to just… walk away from it,” she admitted, her voice small. “He’s been such a big part of my life lately. He’s the one who pushed me to write, who made me believe in myself.”
Sarah’s grip on Eliza’s hand tightened. “I know it feels like that, but you can’t rely on him to validate you. You’re an amazing writer, Eliza. You don’t need him for that. You need to figure out what’s best for you, not what keeps you tied to him.”
Eliza felt a sob rise in her throat, and she quickly covered her face with her hands, trying to hold it together. “I feel like I’ve ruined everything,” she whispered. “I’ve lost Alex. I’ve tangled myself up with Professor James. And now I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Sarah moved closer, wrapping an arm around Eliza’s shoulders, her voice gentle but firm. “You haven’t ruined everything. But you’re in a tough spot, and you need to start making decisions that are right for you, not anyone else. You’re not alone, okay? I’m here. But you have to get out of this situation with your professor before it gets worse.”
Eliza nodded, though her heart still felt heavy with uncertainty. She wanted to believe that she could untangle herself from this mess, that she could find a way to make things right, but the path forward felt so unclear.
“What about Alex?” Eliza asked softly, her voice thick with tears. “I’ve already hurt him so much. How do I fix that?”
Sarah sighed softly, her expression filled with empathy. “You have to be honest with him. It’s not going to be easy, and he might need time to process everything, but he deserves the truth. If you’re not ready for a relationship, you need to tell him that. It’s the only way you can start to heal, both of you.”
Eliza wiped at her eyes, her chest aching with guilt and regret. She knew Sarah was right, but the thought of facing Alex, of telling him the full truth, felt overwhelming. Still, she couldn’t keep running from it. She had already hurt him too much by hiding things.
“I’ll talk to him,” Eliza said quietly, though fear still gnawed at her. “I don’t know how, but I will.”
Sarah squeezed her shoulder gently, her voice soft and reassuring. “I’m here for you, no matter what. But you have to start taking care of yourself, El. You can’t keep carrying all of this alone.”
Eliza nodded, though the weight of everything still pressed down on her. She had finally spoken the truth, but now she had to face the consequences of her actions.
And that, she realized, was the hardest part of all.
