Chapter 201: A Phone Call

Because Robert is always disciplined and punctual in his work, he rarely deviates from being on time.

She hesitated, her finger hovering over the phone for a while, but ultimately she didn't make the call.

This habit developed as a survival instinct during her marriage with Richard.

In the early days of her relationship with Richard, she was not very mature and would sometimes call him if he was running late. But most of the time, Richard either didn't answer or would answer and scold her for disturbing his work.

As a result, Nicole became instinctively afraid to make phone calls in such situations.

While she was still hesitating, the phone suddenly rang, and the caller ID on the screen eased her anxious heart.

"Nicole, are you done with class?"

The man's distinct and gentle voice carried a hint of warmth and hoarseness, resonating softly through the phone. The warm tone carried an unavoidable tenderness. "I'm a bit busy, can you come over to my place? I'll have someone come and pick you up."

Nicole could hear the bustling background noise on Robert's end, and she could imagine how busy he must be. Yet, in this situation, he still took the time to call her and even wanted her to come over.

Her heart softened instantly, and in comparison to her previous encounters, her eyes inexplicably welled up. She controlled her emotions and answered softly, "Robert, it's okay. You're busy, I can go back on my own."

There was silence on the other end of the phone for a few seconds. The man's low and deep voice slowly seeped into her ears:

"Nicole, I miss you. Can you come to my place?"

Nicole's heart skipped a beat, and her heartbeat pounded uncontrollably. Her lips even trembled.

She swallowed heavily, feeling a dryness in her throat.

She held the phone, feeling weak on one side, and quietly breathed a few times before whispering, "Okay."

A light laughter emanated from the man's voice in her ear, and Nicole's lips involuntarily curled up, as if she had caught his good mood.

After hanging up the phone, the car that would pick her up had just arrived. Robert had evidently taken the initiative without consulting her first, and he had planned to pick her up from the beginning.

Nicole didn't feel angry. On the contrary, she was very satisfied. She was happy to accept his attachment to her.

Robert's assistant was the one picking her up as usual.

The young man greeted her with a playful smile when he saw her. "Hello, Jasmine."

Nicole had intended to explain the mistake, but now it was difficult to speak up. She simply smiled, sat in her seat, and remained silent, although the smile on her lips faded slightly.

His address made her feel somewhat guilty, as if she had occupied someone else's nest, and a sense of guilt grew within her.

During the drive, Nicole didn't speak much, but the young man was talkative. They talked about work, life, and the conversation eventually returned to Robert.

"I've been working with Mr. Hayes for many years, and this is the first time I've seen him behave like this with a girlfriend..."

The male assistant laughed uncontrollably, causing Nicole to turn her head and look at him. "What do you mean?"

"He's...a bit clingy..." The male assistant laughed and asked her, "Didn't you notice?"

Nicole fell silent for a moment, her gaze lowered.
