Chapter 301: Margaret Lies
When Ethan saw Vivian suddenly go silent, he immediately stopped recording his fingerprint and approached her.
"What's wrong?" He saw Vivian enlarging the photo Owen had sent over and asked her. "Isn't this Clive's back? Is there something wrong?"
"There's no problem with your uncle's back. I'm not looking at him," Vivian said, sliding over the enlarged part for Ethan to see. "Look at this person. Isn't it my grandmother?"
Ethan took the phone and zoomed in a little, saying, "The figure looks a bit similar, but it's too far away. Even if it's enlarged, it's still not clear."
"Yes," Vivian frowned, "but it really looks like her. I'll give her a call. If this is really my grandmother, then why would she go to the airport?"
After Vivian finished speaking, she exited the chat interface and directly opened the contacts.
Before she could scroll down, Ethan handed her his phone.
"You took the wrong phone, this is yours. I don't think my phone has your grandmother's number."
"You're right. I almost forgot we switched phones. But it's okay, I remember my grandmother's number."
Vivian couldn't be bothered to exchange phones with Ethan anymore. She directly dialed Margaret's number by pressing the numbers on the keypad.
The call was quickly answered.
It was quiet on Margaret's side, and she was happy to receive Vivian's call.
"Hello, Vivian. Why are you calling me at this time? It's nighttime for you, right? Why aren't you sleeping yet?"
Hearing no background noise on the phone, Vivian knew that the person Owen had just captured wasn't her grandmother.
She said with a smile, "I haven't gone to bed yet. I'm planning to go back. I booked a flight for tonight. If it's not delayed, I should be able to return tomorrow evening."
"Are you coming back? Great. That's great." Margaret's words were filled with joy. "Is it evening here for us? Or is it evening in Yondora's time? Let me know what you want to eat, and I'll buy the groceries in advance."
"I'm fine with anything. I meant it's evening in Valarna's time, so just wait for me at home."
"Okay, I'll prepare your favorite dishes."
"You should prepare your favorite dishes as well." Vivian chatted with Margaret about daily life for a few more minutes before finally hanging up the phone.
After that, she handed the phone back to Ethan and asked casually, "So, have you finished recording the fingerprints? Now you can unlock my phone too."
"Yes," Ethan replied, taking Vivian's phone and switching it on. "Now your phone is also open to me anytime."
Vivian said, "I suspect you're talking dirty, but I don't have any evidence."
Ethan chuckled, "I didn't say anything. It's just that you're not pure enough. By the way, have you confirmed that your grandmother is not at the airport?"
"Yes." Vivian nodded. "She is at home. As for the person Owen captured, she should just have a resemblance to my grandmother. After all, there are many people in the world who look alike."
Ethan chuckled without saying anything and looked at the enlarged photo again.
But he still felt that the person looked a lot like Margaret.
After all, Margaret was Vivian's grandmother, so as long as Margaret didn't say anything contradictory, Vivian would usually believe her.
However, it didn't mean that Ethan would also believe Margaret.
Moreover, Ethan's suspicion of Margaret had never been dispelled.
Seeing that Vivian was drinking water, Ethan said to her, "I'm going to the bathroom. If you need anything or have something to do, wait for me to come back."
After speaking, he put his phone in his pocket and headed towards the bathroom.
After making sure that Vivian couldn't see him anymore, Ethan immediately made a phone call.
He gave his order. "Go to the apartment in Harmony Heights and confirm if Margaret is at home. Give me a reply as soon as possible."
"Also, I asked you to investigate Margaret several months ago, but you still haven't given me any results. Is it difficult to find information about her, or are you incompetent?"
"Give you more time? Haven't I given you enough time? I'll give you one more month. If you still can't give me a satisfactory explanation after one month, not only will you not receive the final payment, but I will also refuse to cooperate with you in the future."
Thinking about how they had been investigating Margaret for such a long time with no progress, Ethan felt angry.
He hung up the phone in an unfriendly tone and entered the bathroom.
But while he was washing his hands, his phone suddenly rang.
It was a reply from the private detective, who told him that Margaret was not at home at the moment.
Ethan wiped the water stains off his hands and frowned at himself in the mirror.
He guessed that Margaret had lied to Vivian!
But for now, he didn't plan to tell Vivian about this matter, because even if he did, it would be useless. Moreover, his suspicion of Margaret could potentially become a thorn between him and Vivian.
Besides, Margaret could easily come up with another lie to deceive Vivian.
Margaret could say that she had just gone out or something similar, with excuses as simple as that.
So when Ethan returned to Vivian's side, he didn't say anything.
...
When the plane landed at Amorita Airport, it was already the afternoon of the next day in Valarna time.
Ethan received a call from Kaysen as soon as he got off the plane.
Because Kaysen knew last night that Vivian and Ethan were coming back, he called them and asked them to come back for dinner.
But Ethan knew that even if Vivian had dinner with him at the Benton Mansion, she would have to return to Harmony Heights later to accompany Margaret.
After traveling for more than ten hours, Vivian was already tired. Ethan didn't want her to tire herself out further, so he refused Kaysen's proposal.
Seeing how much Ethan cared for her, Vivian kissed him as a reward. "Then you go back to Harmony Heights with me."
Ethan smiled and stroked Vivian's hair. "Let's forget about it this time. I'm afraid that if I show up, it will ruin Margaret's good mood. I'll drop you off downstairs, and then I'll go back to the office."
"Do you have to go back to the office today?"
"Yeah, even when I was in Yondora, I was still busy with work. I'll just go back to work in the office today."
"You work too hard," Vivian couldn't help but sigh at the thought. "I don't think I've seen you rest much."
"What choice do I have?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Before I met you, I was a vegetable for a year. That time was a period of good rest."
