Chapter 18
KAEL'S POV
I'm rushing back to the infirmary as soon as I receive the mind link concerning Lila's current state.
The same way our blood bond had suddenly faded unexplained last night was just how it had restrengthened earlier today.
Lila not waking up worried me a lot.
The doctor had said the bump on her head was only to result in a mild concussion or, at worst, a slight amnesia haze.
Even he couldn't explain why it had escalated to some sort of coma now.
There wasn't water in her system, nor were there any internal injuries.
With her werewolf powers, the cut at the back of her head had already healed.
She was on a good number of medications, flowing into her veins through the IV tube.
And yet, with every effort, her state remained unchanged as the days counted.
And now, to make matters worse, Alec had just mind-linked to me that she was having a seizure.
I burst into the hospital just on time, running into the room to see the doctor giving her a shot of injection.
A few seconds later and her shaking calms down, but she's sweating profusely as she whimpers softly.
'Mate is in pain,' my wolf, Ace, says to me.
I put aside my questions as to why Alec was even here in the first place and face the pack doctor.
“What happened to her?” I ask frantically as he checks her vitals once more before stepping aside.
“Sorry for the panic, Alpha; she must be suffering from a fever. Seizures are common with such a fever considering her temperature has dropped so much, but with the medication I just gave her now, she'll sleep fine.” He explains, and I nod, going to sit beside her on the bed.
“This is all your fault, you know?” Alec speaks up once the doctor excuses himself, leaving the both of us in the room.
“And how is that?” I growl at him, and he snarls back.
“If you had just let her dance with me and not hovered around with every turn, all of this could've been avoided!” He snaps at me, taking a threatening step forward.
“You were audacious enough to even ask for my wife to dance with you; don't push your luck, Alec.” I snap back at him, meeting his stance with mine.
“It's not a matter of you liking it or not; Lila is my mate, and you're going to have to accept that.” Alec states, making my wolf stir.
“Never.” I'm about to say more, but a weak cough interrupts our standoff, and I turn to see Lila opening her eyes.
LILA'S POV
The atmosphere was thick and heady with the scent of Kael and Alec.
Both oddly brought me comfort.
I blink a few times, focusing on their forms as both men rush to my bedside.
They were looking at me with so much worry and relief.
Even Kael, who usually had his emotions veiled, didn't at the moment.
So this was what it felt like to be cared for?
Or were they just acting out because of their selfish needs?
Did I mean anything more than a wife and mate to either any of the brothers?
“Water..." I whisper, and almost immediately, a nurse rushes in with a glass of water.
She moves to help me bring it to my lips, but Alec snatches the glass away from her.
Before he or Kael can resume their never-ending fight, I take it from him and help myself.
Returning the glass to the young lady after a few sips, she hurried back out, leaving us in awkward silence once more.
“How do you feel?” Alec asks, and I manage a weak smile.
It felt like I had been thrown from the top of a mountain.
My entire body hurt so much, and my skull was threatening to split with a headache.
“Sore” is all I can manage for an answer.
“Do you remember what happened before you lost consciousness? Camille said you tripped and fell; is that true?” Kael asks immediately.
Trust Camille to lie and cover up her tracks.
Tripped and fell?
I look from the alpha to his brother and then back to the alpha.
What would happen to my sister if I ratted out her true motives?
No matter how badly she had hurt me, we were still related by blood.
I could never live with myself if I were the reason something bad happened to her.
And so I make up my mind to lie for her.
Just like I've done countless times over the years.
Just like I lied about Adrian not having any significance to me aside from being Camille's mate.
I knew Kael would be furious if he found out that Adrian was my ex.
He'd be even angrier if he got to know about how I was rejected.
Would he react if he knew the true story of how my family treated me?
What would Alec do too?
“I can't really remember anything clearly; that must've been what happened.” The lie feels heavy on my tongue.
I was doing this for the best.
Maybe one day Camille would change, but that would only be possible if she didn't get herself killed by the temperamental twins I called my husband and mate first.
“Why do I think you're lying to us, Lila?” Alec asks, squinting his eyes at me suspiciously, and I gulp, looking away.
“She's my sister; she would never do anything to hurt me.” I try to sound convincing as I say this.
“I have something I need to tell you guys, something I saw while I was unconscious.” I say, throwing it in to divert the conversation.
I've piqued both their interests with this as they give me their full attention.
“Does it have something to do with the rogues?” Alec beats me to it with his question, and I nod meekly as I turn to Kael, who surprisingly sat quietly.
He wasn't counterattacking his brother or shooting death glares with his eyes at him.
That was a first.
I had to focus on what was important and tell them what I had seen first, though.
“I don't know how and why, but I think I received a vision while I was unconscious; the rogues are planning an attack, and it's in 7 days.” I announce, taking a deep breath as I prepare to retell everything I had seen to them.
