Chapter 53
As the sun was low in the sky, its golden light bathed the village. Lilith and Kent decided to plunge into the very heart of the Spring Festival. From all sides, the cheerful sounds of street musicians mingled with outbursts of laughter. The smell of roasted almonds and honey pastries wafted through the air, alluring everyone around. Every stall was decorated with colors: vibrant banners fluttering, twinkling fairy lights dancing in the soft breeze, and flowers on the tables cheerfully placed. The atmosphere almost felt magical.
"Look over there!" Lilith exclaimed, pulling on Kent's hand and pointing toward a booth filled with colorful lanterns. "We have to get one. It'll be perfect for decorating my room!"
Kent smiled, his heart warmed by her excitement. "Lead the way, my adventurous sunflower! A lantern it is!" He held her hand a little tighter as they navigated through groups of children running around, couples sharing cotton candy, and friends shouting with joy over carnival games.
Lilith felt giddy; the laughter bubbled like a brook inside her, as they passed by the juggler, who cast flaming torches high with expertise. "Do you think you could do that?" she teased, nudging Kent's ribs playfully.
Me? Juggle flaming torches? Nah, I like my limbs intact," he replied jocularly, his fingers still interlaced in hers. "But if I could, I'd be juggling you and pastries at the same time!"
"Oh, how romantic! Just what every girl dreams of-flaming torches and pastries," she shot back, rolling her eyes to the heavens, a smile breaking across her face.
They continued walking, drinking in the merry atmosphere of the festival, when Kent suddenly stood still, his laugh dying. "Wait, is that Finn?"
Lilith turned, her gaze following his to a nearby booth jammed with people. And there stood Finn, his familiar figure unmistakable as he made his way through the crowd. It wasn't his presence that made Kent's heart do an involuntary somersault; it was the dark clouds forming over Finn's handsome features. He gritted his teeth, eyes narrowing as they landed squarely on her and Kent, who were still holding hands.
A thrill of mild satisfaction surged through Kent. In those moments, he had often deflected Finn's attentions toward Lilith, brushing them off as platonic goodwill, but now! Now, he could see the jealousy radiating from Finn as clear as the sky above.
"Hey, Lilith, look at that," Kent said, nodding toward a nearby vendor selling pretzels. "Why don't we grab a couple? I heard they're heavenly!
"I certainly would like pretzels, no worries for me!" she pipped, still unconscious of her surroundings brewing the bad energy across.
As they got nearer to the stall owner, Finn came nearer too-a scowl clouded on his face. "Lilith. Kent." Clipped, firm. Tension swarmed thick, heavy with impatient undertone.
"Hello, Finn!" Lilith churred brightly, catching under a sudden shift of tone that made her more serious in a trice. "Are you okay with everything here at this fest?
“Yeah, it’s okay,” he replied, forcing out the words as his gaze flicked down to their joined hands. The tension in his jaw made it clear he was less than thrilled about the sight.
“You should join us! We’re about to get some pretzels!” Kent interjected cheerfully, an eagerness that belied the slight undercurrent of competitiveness growing within him.
“No thanks.” Finn’s expression hardened slightly, though he managed to keep his voice moderated. “I have—other plans.” His words barely masked the disdain lurking just beneath the surface.
Lilith sensed the awkwardness, biting her lower lip as she exchanged a glance with Kent. “Well, I hope you have fun, Finn!” she said, attempting to keep things light.
"Yeah, have fun," Kent echoed now, drawing Lilith nearer, his boldness feeding off the knot that grew within Finn's stomach. "Maybe next time we can hang out together. The more, the merrier!"
Finn's gaze darted back up at Kent, and for the briefest of moments, there was a flicker of something—envy, perhaps. It tickled Kent to see him rattled, his heart swelling with a mix of pride and affection for Lilith.
"Sure." Finn's voice was tight, his gaze flickering back to Lilith, though there was a rigidity in the set of his shoulders that spoke volumes. "Take care, Lilith."
"Yeah, you too!" Lilith called out, waving a hand, oblivious to the currents of tension surrounding her.
As Finn turned sharply and walked away, Kent felt empowered by the moment. He had long understood that what he and Lilith shared was unique to anything else, but this was amplified by the explicit jealousy he had just confronted.
"Did you see that?" Kent whispered, wearing a huge grin as they continued on toward the pretzel vendor. "He looked like he just bit into a lemon!"
Lilith burst into giggles, the sound ringing like music in his ears. “You’re terrible! But I can’t say I’m not a little pleased he’s annoyed.”
“Same,” Kent admitted, his grin broadening. “Let’s grab those pretzels and relish the fact that we just made him mad.”
They arrived at the vendor, a cheerful old woman with kind eyes. “What can I get you two?” she asked, her smile infectious.
“Two pretzels, please!” Kent replied. “One with salt and one with cheese—and extra cheese.”
The vendor laughed, glancing between him and Lilith. “Ah, a cheese lover! You’ve got good taste.”
As they received their warm, steaming pretzels, the comforting aroma wafted towards Lilith. “They smell amazing!” she exclaimed, taking a big bite of hers, the soft bread and rich flavors melding in her mouth.
Mmm, delicious," Kent agreed, tearing off a piece of his. He watched with a fond gaze as she savored hers, the light spilling around them like liquid gold.
"By the way, do you actually like Finn?" Kent found himself asking, curious about her perspective.
She paused mid-bite, her brows furrowing as she thought of her response. "I mean, I appreciate his friendship. He has always been nice to me, but. you know I have eyes only for you, right?"
His heart fluttered at the words, warmth filling his chest. "Good, because this sunflower has only one bee to pollinate her," he teased, winking playfully.
Lilith rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You ridiculous flirt. You know how to make me feel special."
Kent leaned in closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "It's not flattery when it's true. I mean it; you're incredible, and Finn can't compete."
She melted under his gaze, those blue eyes piercing through any lingering doubts. "Do you really think so?
Absolutely," he replied, fingers tightening around hers again as they walked through the crowd. The darkening sky seemed to only add to the sparkle of the festival lights around them, creating an enchanting canvas. "The way you laugh, the way you see the world, you have this magical light within you that draws everyone in.
Lilith felt her cheeks warm under his loving gaze, and her eyes rushed to fill. "Kent…" She struggled to find words; emotions bubbled like a fizzy drink inside her, ready to overflow.
"Don't let Finn distract you, what we have is real, and I cherish every moment," he continued, determination potent in his voice as they caught the attention of a passing festival performer twirling brightly colored ribbons.
"Thanks," she said softly, drawing strength from his words. "It means the world to me. I just—Finn has always been around, you know? But you… you hold my heart in your hands."
"I won't drop it, I promise," Kent assured her, holding her gaze with fierce conviction. "And while we may have our fair share of obstacles, I'll always choose you, Lilith."
Tears prickled at the corners of her eyes as the emotion swelled inside. "I feel the same way," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Then let's make the most of this festival together," Kent exclaimed again, much more excited now, his smile lighting up the twilight. "Let's swing by the games next! I bet I can win you that giant stuffed bear!
Lilith cocked a brow, and her eyes wrinkled in playful skepticism. "Oh really? You think you can take on the ring toss champion? You might want to practice."
"Careful! I'm feeling competitive now!" he exclaimed, with mock deliberation. "Let's make a wager-if I win you that bear, you owe me a special date!
Deal!" Her heart rose at the thought of a victory, but equally because of the thrill involved with a special date.
Kent took her through the festivities, dodging the colors around them, their laughter merry in tune with the chirping background. With games and jubilation building up, the jealousy Finn had evoked was minute in nature compared to what they were crafting-a love that brightened with every compassionate moment they shared, hand in hand amidst the chaos of celebrations.
At last, they arrived at the game booth. Kent eyed it, calculating. It was indeed a challenge, but he felt his blood stir with the opportunity. "Alright, watch and learn, my sunflower," he said with confidence, stepping up to the stall.
As Kent played, throwing rings with practiced precision, Lilith's admiration swelled, and her appreciation only deepened with every ring that landed perfectly on a bottle. The vendor's expressions changed from disbelief to encouragement as Kent continued to nail each toss, a fierce determination fueling him.
"I think he's actually going to do it!" she exclaimed, bouncing on her toes, excitement radiating from her.
"Just a bit more!" Kent muttered under his breath, focusing intently. With the final ring, a triumphant cheer erupted from her lips as it landed, securing victory.
"I did it! I totally did it!" Kent exclaimed, lifting his arms dramatically, a grin splitting his face.
The vendor handed over the giant stuffed bear, its plush surface soft and inviting. "Congratulations! Here's your prize!"
"Now this is what you call a trophy," Kent said, clutching the bear triumphantly, turning to Lilith with eyes sparkling. "And your special date is officially scheduled!"
Lilith burst into a fit of laughter, her joy beyond bounds. "You are unbelievable! That thing is larger than I am!"
"Exactly!" he exclaimed, his eyes alight with excitement, "And it's yours to cuddle! But again, my love, it is another fabulous proof that I can keep you happy."
