Chapter 26: Rescue Plan
Kael pulled at the black collar around his neck until his skin bled, but it wouldn't break. He paced his small stone cell like a trapped animal. Without his wolf strength or magic, he felt helpless for the first time in ages.
"Elias," he whispered. "I'll find you."
A sound at the door made him freeze. The lock clicked and the door swung open. Kael braced himself for Orion, but instead, Marcus stepped in.
"You!" Kael lunged at him, but Marcus stepped away easily.
"I'm not here to fight," Marcus said quickly. "I'm here to help."
Kael laughed bitterly. "Help? After you failed us?"
"I made a mistake," Marcus said, his voice low. "Orion offered me power, but this—" he gestured around, "—this is wrong. Using an unborn child for the shadow? I never agreed to that."
"Where's Elias?" Kael demanded.
"Recaptured," Marcus admitted. "I tried to help him escape, but the shadow caught him."
Kael's heart sank. "Is he hurt?"
"No. Orion needs him healthy for the ritual tomorrow night."
Marcus pulled a small key from his pocket. "I can't remove the collar, but I can free you from this cell."
Kael narrowed his eyes. "Why should I trust you?"
"Because right now, I'm your only hope," Marcus said frankly. "And because there's someone waiting outside who wants to see you."
Before Kael could ask who, Marcus freed his chains and opened the door wider. A person stumbled in, leaning heavily on the wall.
"Seraphina!" Kael gasped.
Elias's sister looked pale and weak, but her violet eyes burned with purpose. "Kael," she nodded. "We don't have much time."
"How did you get here?" Kael asked, holding her as she swayed.
"Shadow paths," she said grimly. "Nearly killed me in my condition, but I had no choice."
Marcus closed the door behind them. "The guards change in fifteen minutes. We need to move fast."
"I'm not going anywhere without Elias," Kael said strongly.
"We can't free him yet," Seraphina said. "The temple is too heavily guarded, and we need help."
"What help?" Kael asked. "We're in the Valley of Mists, cut off from everyone!"
Seraphina smiled slightly. "Not everyone. My pack has been hiding in these mountains for generations. They know ways in and out of the valley that even Orion doesn't know."
Hope flared in Kael's chest. "Your pack is here?"
"Waiting for my signal," she confirmed. "But first, we need to get you out of here and remove that collar."
Marcus shook his head. "Only Orion has the key to the collars."
"Then we'll take it from him," Kael growled.
"First things first," Seraphina said. "We need to escape this tower."
Marcus led them through dark halls, stopping whenever shadow guards passed. Kael noticed that Seraphina's steps were shaky. The black rock had left a dark mark on her chest.
"Are you alright?" he whispered.
"I'll live," she said shortly. "Worry about Elias. The red moon rises tomorrow night. If Orion completes the process..." She didn't finish the sentence.
They reached a small door that led outside. The night air was thick with mist, hiding the stars. In the distance, the temple rose like a shadow against the sky.
"That's where they're keeping Elias," Marcus whispered. "In the heart of the temple."
"How many guards?" Kael asked.
"Too many for us three," Marcus admitted. "Especially with you wearing that collar."
Seraphina pulled a small whistle from her pocket. It was cut from bone and decorated with tiny runes. "Follow me," she said. "And stay quiet."
They crept through the misty valley, keeping to the shadows. Kael's every sense screamed at him to run to the temple, to find Elias. But without his skills, he would only get himself killed.
After what seemed like hours, they reached a secret cave entrance, nearly invisible behind a waterfall. Seraphina stopped and raised the bone whistle to her lips. The sound it made was too high for human ears, but Kael felt it tremble through his bones.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, quietly, figures emerged from the mist. Wolves with silver fur, shifting to human form as they neared. They wore leather armor decorated with runes similar to those on Seraphina's whistle.
"The Night Pack," Seraphina explained. "My mother's people."
A tall woman with silver hair stepped forward. "Seraphina. We feared you were lost."
"Not yet, Aunt Lyra," Seraphina said. "But Elias soon will be if we don't act quickly."
Lyra's eyes found Kael, narrowing at the sight of the black collar. "This is the Alpha who bonded with Elias?"
"My name is Kael," he said, standing as tall as his weakened body would allow. "And I need your help to save your nephew."
Lyra observed him for a long moment, then nodded. "Come inside. We have much to discuss."
Inside the cave was a hidden camp. Dozens of silver-haired wolves moved about, preparing weapons and armor. They all bore the same mark as Seraphina—a half moon behind their left ear.
They gathered around a stone table where Lyra unrolled an old map of the valley. The building was marked with red ink.
"The Temple of Shadows is the oldest structure in the valley," Lyra stated. "Built by the first shifters to contain the shadow when it first appeared in our world."
"But it failed," Marcus added. "The shadow escaped and has been hunting powerful vessels ever since."
"And now it wants my child," Kael growled.
"Not just any child," Seraphina said quietly. "A child of both Alpha and Omega families, with Aelara's blessing. The perfect vessel."
Kael's hand went to the collar around his neck. "I need this off if I'm going to fight."
"The key is here," Lyra pointed to a small room near the top of the temple. "Orion keeps all magical artifacts in his private sanctuary."
"Then that's where I'm going," Kael said.
"Not alone," Seraphina stressed. "We do this together."
Lyra nodded to her soldiers. "Prepare for battle. We move at dawn."
As the others left to prepare, Marcus pulled Kael away. "There's something you should know," he said, his voice low. "About Orion."
"What about him?" Kael asked.
"He wasn't always like this," Marcus said. "The shadow has been poisoning his mind for centuries, feeding on his jealousy and pain."
"I don't care about his sad story," Kael snapped. "He took Elias. That's all I need to know."
"You should care," Marcus urged, "because there might be a way to save him. And if we save Orion, we might save Elias too."
Before Kael could reply, a commotion broke out at the cave entrance. A young wolf burst in, bleeding from several cuts.
"Shadow wolves!" he gasped. "They found us!"
Lyra sprang to action. "Defenders to the door! Protect the hurt!"
The cave burst into chaos. Warriors grabbed weapons and ran to the door. Kael, despite his weakened state, joined them.
Outside, shadow wolves mobbed the waterfall. Their smoky bodies seemed to melt through the rocks, reuniting inside the cave.
Kael grabbed a silver spear from a fallen fighter and thrust it through a shadow wolf. The thing howled and dissolved into black mist.
"Silver weapons work!" he yelled to the others.
They fought fiercely, but without his Alpha strength, Kael soon tired. A shadow wolf leaped at him, jaws aimed for his throat. He couldn't raise his spear in time.
Suddenly, the wolf burst into black smoke. Seraphina stood behind it, a silver knife in her hand.
"We can't win this fight," she said, pulling Kael back. "There are too many."
Lyra emerged beside them, blood streaming from a cut on her face. "Take the secret tunnel," she ordered. "We'll hold them off as long as we can."
"I won't leave your people to die," Kael protested.
"They aren't fighting to die," Lyra said strongly. "They're fighting so you can save Elias and stop the ritual. Now go!"
Seraphina pulled Kael toward the back of the cave, where a small opening led deeper into the mountain. Marcus followed, helping an injured warrior.
"What about the others?" Kael asked as they entered the tunnel.
"If they can, they'll follow," Seraphina said grimly. "But our priority has to be reaching Elias before the blood moon rises."
They hurried through the dark tunnel, the sounds of fighting fading behind them. After what seemed like hours, they emerged on a ledge halfway up the mountain. From here, they could see the entire valley—and the temple at its heart, glowing with an eerie red light.
"We're too late," Marcus whispered. "The ritual has begun."
"No," Kael said, his eyes fixed on the forehead. "The red moon doesn't rise until tonight. That light is something else."
Seraphina gasped. "It's Elias! His magic is fighting back against the collar!"
As they watched, the red glow pulsed brighter, then faded. A scream rang across the valley—not of pain, but of rage.
"Orion," Seraphina whispered. "He's punishing Elias for resisting."
Kael's hands curled into fists, the collar biting into his neck. "I'm going down there. Now."
"That's suicide," Marcus objected.
"I don't care," Kael growled. "I won't let him hurt Elias anymore."
"Wait," Seraphina said suddenly, her eyes wide. "Look!"
They all turned to see a person emerge from the temple doors. Even from this distance, the midnight blue hair was obvious.
"Elias!" Kael cried. "He's escaping!"
But something was wrong. Elias wasn't running. He was walking calmly, his moves stiff and unnatural. Behind him came Orion, and between them floated a small, bright object.
Seraphina's face drained of color. "That's not Elias in control of his body," she whispered. "And that object—it's the Heart of Aelara."
"What does that mean?" Kael asked.
Seraphina's eyes met his, filled with fear. "It means the shadow has already begun to control him. And it's using him to find the final piece of the Heart."
"Where's it taking him?" Kael asked.
"To the deepest lake," Marcus answered. "Where the shadow was first imprisoned thousands of years ago."
"Then that's where we're going," Kael said, already moving toward the way down the mountain.
"Kael, wait," Seraphina grabbed his arm. "There's something you need to know about the process. Something I didn't tell Elias."
Kael paused, dread filling his chest.
"If the shadow fully merges with the baby," Seraphina said, her voice breaking, "the only way to stop it is to kill them both."
