Chapter 137: Who Knows Whether She Will Betray Me
Was Caroline calling her about Jonathan?
But she really wasn't in the mood.
Caroline kept calling persistently. Grace finally answered.
"Grace, I know what's bothering you."
Caroline got straight to the point. "I'll tell you this—the mole in your research institute is Carol. She's already on the run, and I know her escape route."
"You know her escape route?" Grace shot to her feet, eyes wide with disbelief.
She was so worked up that her hands gripped the phone tightly.
Every sentence Caroline said hit like a bombshell, each one completely unexpected.
"How did you find out?"
"Obviously, I got it out of Charles." Caroline curled her lip dismissively.
"You think everyone's as dumb as you? All you do when things go wrong is act on impulse. You're brave but completely brainless."
Grace didn't care one bit about the insults. Her mind was entirely consumed with Carol's situation.
"Tell me where Carol went. I really need to know."
Caroline gave a cold snort. "Of course I can tell you—otherwise why would I be calling? But you know you'll have to return the favor, right?"
Grace paused.
The person Caroline cared about most was obviously Jonathan.
But Caroline was already pregnant with Jonathan's child and still hadn't won him over—what could she possibly do about it?
She couldn't exactly force Jonathan to marry Caroline, could she? He wouldn't listen to her anyway.
Most importantly, things had gotten this messy and she and Jonathan still hadn't managed to finalize their divorce.
"Grace, I'm not going to make this hard for you."
Caroline put on an air of being reasonable and magnanimous. "Your divorce from Jonathan isn't something that'll be settled overnight. And even after it's settled, whether Jonathan will marry me is still up in the air."
Grace raised her eyebrows in surprise.
She never expected the usually unreasonable and domineering Caroline to say something so rational and generous.
Had someone taken over her body?
Caroline continued, "Right now I just need you to promise me one thing—don't go chasing after Jonathan."
"Of course I won't chase after him." The words flew out of Grace's mouth.
"I'm not finished yet." Caroline sounded impatient.
"I don't care how you do it, but get Jonathan back to the country as soon as possible. After he's back, you don't need to worry about the rest."
"Whether Jonathan and I end up together or not, I won't blame you."
"As long as you agree, I'll tell you Carol's escape route right now. I guarantee the police will have her in custody today."
The offer was too tempting for Grace to resist.
She barely hesitated before nodding. "Okay, I promise."
"Good. I've recorded this."
Caroline smiled triumphantly, her expression turning sinister, her voice dropping lower.
"Grace, don't say I didn't warn you—if you dare go back on your word, I'll make your life a living hell. I'll trash my own reputation if I have to, and you won't have a single peaceful day."
"I understand." Grace gripped her phone tighter.
She'd experienced Caroline's methods firsthand.
Caroline never cared what people said about the tactics she used to get what she wanted, never cared what names they called her—she only cared about achieving her goals.
People like that were more single-minded, and harder to deal with.
"Alright, I'm sending it to you now." Caroline was quite cautious.
If she said everything over the phone and Grace got any ideas, every word she said could be used as evidence.
But if she sent it directly, who could prove she was the one who sent it?
Moments later, Grace received Caroline's message.
It contained the conversation between Caroline and Charles, along with the country Carol had fled to and the hotel where she was currently staying.
"Thank you, Caroline." Grace's gratitude was sincere.
No matter what grievances existed between her and Caroline before, they all ultimately stemmed from Jonathan.
But at least in this moment, the two of them were on the same side.
Caroline gave a proud huff.
"Don't think I'm treating you like a real friend. Everything you're doing now is just to atone for your sins."
"If it weren't for you back then, Jonathan and I would've been together ages ago. None of this would've been necessary."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Grace's head started aching as soon as she heard this topic. After a few more words, she hung up.
"Michael, I've got new information."
Grace quickly shared the good news with Michael and called the police.
She didn't say much—just provided the route without mentioning how she got the information or bringing up Caroline.
The police tactfully didn't ask too many questions and immediately set out to apprehend Carol.
Michael was quite surprised.
After Grace explained, he said, "You and Caroline seem to be getting pretty close these days."
"That's just surface-level." Grace didn't think much of it.
"Caroline said so herself—she'll never consider me a friend. The only reason we're working together is so she can get Jonathan."
She sighed deeply. "Truth is, I don't want to be friends with someone like Caroline either. She's too scary, willing to do anything to achieve her goals."
"Today she can betray Charles to get Jonathan. What about next time? Will she betray me?"
"You've got a point there." Michael agreed wholeheartedly.
It seemed Grace was still clearheaded, not losing herself just because she was cooperating with Caroline.
"So what are you going to do to get Jonathan back to the country?"
Grace thought hard for a moment, then shook her head. "I don't have any ideas yet."
"Then why did you agree so quickly?"
"I didn't have a choice." Grace looked helpless.
"The situation was so urgent, and Caroline was deliberately dangling the information in front of me. What else could I do besides agree?"
"Besides, I just don't have a plan 'yet'—that doesn't mean I won't come up with anything at all."
Grace actually already had an idea forming.
But she needed to do something to throw Jonathan off.
More precisely, it was about time to head back home anyway.
Once Carol was arrested, the police would definitely extract information from her.
When that happened, both Dr. Carter and Charles would get dragged down with her.
