Chapter 119: Reconciliation
Nicole sat behind her desk, staring out the large glass window of her office, lost in thought.
The morning had been a blur of meetings and paperwork, but her mind was elsewhere.
The past weeks had been stormy: their victory against the Fury family, reclaiming what she lost, and finally getting justice from the wrongs done to her. Yet deep down, she knew there were still loose strings to tie.
A soft knock at her door pulled her out of her musings. It was Emilia peeking inside. "Ma'am, you have a visitor."
"Who is it?" Nicole asked, assuming some other business partner or yet another journalist looking for an interview.
Emilia hesitated. "It's Taylor Fury."
Nicole's breath hitched. Taylor? Here? Of all people?
"Let him in," she said, though her voice did not reflect the sudden turmoil that had risen in her chest.
The door swung open, and Taylor walked in, his usual arrogance replaced with something unfamiliar -- humility.
He looked different, almost worn down, as if the weight of the world had finally pressed him down.
Ever since Nicole returned to the city, watching her on tv, he'd felt something familiar - that feelings of connection with the one you love.
But the gravity of his betrayal couldn't get him to let her know what he still felt for her.
"Nicole," he said quietly, his tone free of that hostility that seemed to lace all their conversations.
"Taylor," she returned, easing back into her chair. "What do you want?"
He let out a deep sigh, running his hand through the slightly disheveled hair of his head. "I came to apologize."
Nicole raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Apologize? For what exactly? For ruining my life? For not believing me? For taking your mother's side against me when I needed you most? Be specific."
Taylor flinched at her words but nodded. "All of it," he admitted. "I should have believed you three years ago when you tried to explain what happened at that hotel. I should have listened when you told me you were pregnant. I should have protected you, not thrown you to the wolves. And because I failed you, you lost our child."
His voice finally cracked on the last word, and for a moment, Nicole saw the depth of pain that he had carried with him, buried, these many years.
He also wasn't there to apologize. He was here to grieve.
A lump welled in Nicole's throat, but still, she kept silent, and let him proceed.
"I wasted years blaming you, hating you, building up this ghost of a villain in my mind. But that was wrong, and I'm so, so sorry."
Before Nicole could reply, the door opened again.
Sarah entered next, apprehension etched on her features.
Nicole's eyes flashed dark as she straightened. "What is this? Some kind of family reunion?"
First to speak was Sarah, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Nicole, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness, but I need to say this. I was jealous, selfish, and blind. I let my insecurities drive me to betray you. I helped ruin your marriage, and for that, I am deeply sorry."
Nicole took a deep breath and looked at the two of them. The ones who had once been the architects of her pain now stood before her, seeking redemption.
Part of her wanted to hold onto her anger, to remind them of every wound they inflicted on her, but another part of her -- the one that had spent years longing for peace knew such hate would poison her own heart.
After all, the sole architect of her misery had met the sting of justice; she made sure of that.
The silence between them stretched out until she eventually spoke.
"I don't know if I can ever forget what you did to me. The betrayal, the pain, the loss of my child. those wounds don't just disappear. But... Let's make sure we don't see each other again because I can't promise what I'd do. I hope you understand?"
Taylor's shoulders sagged in relief.
Sarah wiped the tears off her eyes, and even Taylor seemed shaken by Nicole's words.
Taylor stepped forward, hesitant. "I understand. Thank you, for hearing us out," he whispered, and his voice was hoarse with emotion.
"Go," she said, giving a small smile. "I'll need my privacy now."
Taylor nodded, his gratitude palpable. With one last glance at her, the two of them turned and walked out of her office, leaving Nicole standing there, lighter than she had in years.
Just as they opened the door, Leo stood before them, about to pull the door open. Taylor only smiled at him while Sarah and Veronica went on.
Unlike Taylor, Leo didn't look remorseful, he looked conflicted, unsure whether to lash out or walk away.
"You've been avoiding me," he said, his voice a mix of frustration and longing.
Nicole sighed. "I know. And I'm sorry."
Leo took a step closer. "Is this about the case? About Taylor? Do you still have feelings for him?"
Nicole's eyes widened. "No! Of course not. Taylor is my past. You... you're my future."
Her voice somehow betrayed her emotion. She knew somewhere in her heart, she still felt something for Taylor, something she hated herself to still feel.
Leo searched her face, his tension easing slightly. "Then why have you been pushing me away?"
A rush of tears at the corners, Nicole realized the injustice she'd been doing him.
Out of instinct, she stepped right into his open arms and pressed her body firmly against his.
"Because I was scared," she finally admitted against his chest. "Scared to lose myself into this revenge; scared to spoil what we're having."
Leo held her, his arms secure around her waist. "I've always been here for you, Nicole. But you have to let me in."
Nicole pulled back a bit, peering into his deep, warm eyes.
Taking a shaky breath, she reached for his hand and placed it on her stomach. "I have something to tell you."
Leo's eyebrows furrowed in misunderstanding, and then his eyes opened in a lightbulb moment. His breath caught as he stared at her in utter disbelief. "Are you... are you saying-"
Nicole nodded, tears rolling over her cheeks. "You're going to be a father."
Taylor who was still standing outside the door, eavesdropping, felt his heart skipped a beat on hearing Nicole tell Leo he's going to be a father.
He was conflicted weather to be happy for his ex-wife or regretful. Well, he felt both as he shook his head regrettably.
He walked away to catch up with Sarah and Veronica.
For a moment, Leo was stunned, his emotions crashing over him like the ocean waves.
Then, without warning, he lifted her off the ground, twirling her around with inexpressible joy. "We're having a baby!" he laughed out loud.
Nicole giggled through her tears, holding onto him tightly.
As Leo finally set her down, he cupped her face in his hands. "This is our fresh start, Nicole. Our chance to build something beautiful."
She nodded, smiling. "Yes. It is."
