Chapter 76

Chapter Seventy-Seven:

Ethan still looked skeptical, but he didn't argue. "Okay, we'll keep working with him. But we need to be careful. We don't know who else is watching us."

The next day, Emily and Ethan met with their lawyer. He was a tall, thin man with glasses and a sharp suit.

"I've reviewed the evidence," he said. "And I think we can make a case. But we have to be careful. The boss has a lot of influence, and he's not afraid to use it."

Emily and Ethan nodded, understanding the risks. "What can we do to protect ourselves?" Emily asked.

"We can file for protective custody," the lawyer said. "That way, you'll be safe while we build the case."

Emily and Ethan agreed, and the lawyer filed the paperwork.

Over the next few days, Emily and Ethan kept a low profile. They didn't leave the hotel unless they had to, and they were careful not to talk about the case in public.

But one evening, as they were returning from dinner, they were ambushed.

A group of men dressed in black came out of nowhere and surrounded them. Emily and Ethan knew that they were in trouble.

"What do you want?" Ethan asked, trying to keep his cool.

One of the men stepped forward. "We're here to make sure you don't testify against the boss."

Emily felt her heart sink. They were too late. The boss had found out.

Ethan tried to reason with the men. "We don't want any trouble. We just want to do the right thing."

But the men didn't listen. They started to advance on Emily and Ethan, their fists clenched.

Emily knew that they had to act fast. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, ready to fight.

The first man came at her, swinging his fist. Emily dodged and countered, landing a solid blow to his jaw.

The man staggered back, surprised. Emily didn't give him a chance to recover. She launched into a series of kicks and punches, taking down each of the men one by one.

Ethan watched in amazement as Emily fought off their attackers. He knew that he couldn't let her fight alone.

He stepped forward, ready to join the fray. But before he could, Emily finished off the last of their attackers.

She turned to Ethan, her chest heaving with exertion. "We need to get out of here," she said.

They ran back to their hotel room, locking the door behind them. Emily collapsed onto the bed, her heart still racing.

Ethan sat down beside her, still in shock. "I can't believe you just did that," he said.

Emily shrugged. "I had to. We don't have any other choice."

Ethan nodded, understanding the gravity of their situation. "We have to leave town. Now."

Emily agreed. They packed their bags and left the hotel, taking a taxi to the airport.

As they waited for their flight, Emily and Ethan knew that they were in for a long fight. But they were determined to see it through.

"We'll make him pay for what he's done," Emily said.

Ethan took her hand. "Together," he said.

And with that, they boarded their flight, ready to face whatever came their way.

The flight was long and uncomfortable, but Emily and Ethan tried to make the best of it. They talked about their plans once they arrived at their destination and what they would do next. They also talked about their marriage contract, which they had entered into just a few months before. It was a business arrangement, a way for them to combine their resources and strengthen their positions in their respective fields. But now, with everything that had happened, they wondered if their marriage could become something more.

As the plane descended into their destination airport, Emily and Ethan felt a sense of relief. They had made it this far, and they were ready to take the next step.

But as they stepped out of the airport and into the bright sunshine, they were greeted by a group of men dressed in suits. Emily and Ethan knew immediately that they were not here to welcome them.

"What's going on?" Ethan asked, his heart racing.

One of the men stepped forward. "We've been sent to take you to see the boss."

Emily and Ethan knew that they had no choice but to go with them. They got into a black SUV and were driven to a large, imposing building on the outskirts of town.

As they were led inside, Emily and Ethan couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. They knew that they were walking into a trap, but they didn't know how to get out of it.

The boss was waiting for them in a large, ornate office. He was a middle-aged man with a stern expression and a deep voice.

"I hear that you're planning to testify against me," he said, his eyes narrowing.

Emily and Ethan tried to keep their cool. "We have evidence that proves your involvement in illegal activities," Emily said.

The boss laughed. "Do you think that matters to me? I have more power than you could ever imagine."

Suddenly, the boss's demeanor changed. He stood up and walked over to Emily, getting uncomfortably close.

"I know about your little marriage contract," he said, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "And I know that you're not really in love. But maybe I can change that."

Emily and Ethan knew that they were in trouble. They tried to back away, but the boss's men were blocking the door.

Suddenly, there was a loud banging sound. The door burst open, and a group of armed police officers rushed in.

"Everyone, freeze!" one of the officers shouted.

The boss and his men tried to make a run for it, but the police quickly subdued them.

Emily and Ethan looked at each other, relieved. They had made it through another close call.

As they left the building and headed back to their hotel, Emily turned to Ethan.

"I know this isn't how we imagined our marriage," she said. "But maybe it can be something more."

Ethan smiled. "I'm willing to give it a try."

And with that, Emily and Ethan headed back to their hotel room, ready to start a new chapter in their lives together.
