Chapter 45
ELENA'S POV
A CLOSE CALL
“Fuck!" Conner yelled, his voice sharp with alarm and laced with pure shock as he swerved the steering wheel sharply to the right. The tires screeched in protest, rubber grinding against the asphalt as the car veered off its path, narrowly avoiding the looming headlights of an oncoming truck that seemed to appear out of nowhere.
The sound of the truck's horn blared past us, fading just as quickly as it had come, replaced by an odd, suffocating silence.
For a few brief moments, neither of us said a word. The only sounds that filled the car were the rapid inhales through our noses and the unsteady exhales from our mouths. My breathing felt shallow and erratic. My chest rose and felt like it was trying to catch up with the panic still echoing in my veins. Slowly, the adrenaline began to settle, and everything faded into a haunting, heavy stillness.
"You good?" Conner asked, his voice low and careful. The calmness in his tone contrasted with the chaos that had just occurred. His eyes flicked toward me for a second, a quick glance, and then back to the road.
I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. My voice was lost somewhere in the chaos inside my head. Thoughts swirled uncontrollably, and my heart pounded so fiercely it felt like it would leap out of my chest. I trembled from within, a subtle but unrelenting shake that gripped my entire body. Breathing was suddenly a chore. My eyes were wide open and fixed on the road ahead, but everything looked like a blur, a vague mess of colors and shapes. I wasn’t really seeing anything. I was just staring….blankly.
Conner didn’t push. He just kept driving in silence, his grip on the wheel tight but steady. The road curved slightly, and the city lights cast fleeting shadows across his face. We reached a roundabout, the car slowing as we approached it.
"Hey..." he said gently, his foot pressing the brake. The car eased to a stop. He tilted his neck toward me, turning his head to get a proper look at me. Then, carefully, he reached out and tapped my arm.
"Hey... you still there?" he muttered.
"Huh? Huh?" I blurted, blinking rapidly as I snapped out of my haze. The suddenness of his voice, the touch…it startled me. I felt disoriented like I had just been yanked out of a trance.
"Where’s your mind at? I’ve called you a couple times," Conner said, his voice edged with concern now, softer than usual.
"I... I’m sorry about that," I stammered, my lips parting but unsure what words to fill the silence with. I was grasping, searching for something, literally anything..that could patch the awkward air between us.
Conner didn’t say anything right away. He let the silence linger, then muttered under his breath, "Let it go, Lena..." His hand reached out again, resting lightly on my shoulder. He gave it a gentle shake..nothing forceful, just enough to ground me, to remind me that I was here and safe.
But I didn’t respond. My head dipped low, eyes staring at the floor of the car, unwilling to meet his gaze. My mouth opened slightly as a shallow gasp slipped out, an attempt to compose myself. I was trying…really really trying, but I was still shaken. My mind hadn’t caught up with the moment yet.
“Uhh... so... you sure you can stay home alone?” Conner asked, his tone walking a thin line between gentle concern and a subtle firmness. “You can come over to mine…”
It wasn’t exactly a suggestion, it felt more like a quiet insistence. Like he’d already decided what would be best for me, assuming I couldn’t trust myself to be alone. Maybe he was right. But at that moment, the thought of being around anyone, even Conner…felt too heavy. I needed my space. I needed to be alone with my thoughts, to scream into a pillow or collapse into silence on my own terms.
“Nah... uh... I’ll go home,” I muttered, barely loud enough for the words to be clear. “Thank you for your concern…”
He didn’t argue. He simply nodded, and for a split second, silence swallowed the car again.
"Okay... I'll drop you off then," Conner said. He turned the ignition, the engine hummed back to life, and we continued driving. The world outside the window passed by like a forgotten dream…
Eventually, we turned onto my street.
"I'll drop off," I said quietly, already reaching for my seatbelt.
Conner didn’t respond at first. The car kept moving, tires rolling. He turned his head slightly, and one of his eyebrows rose as if to ask what you said... It was obvious he hadn’t quite caught what I said.
He raised his chin in a questioning motion, eyes glancing over.
"I'm stopping here," I said again, this time slightly louder and clearer.
With a screech of rubber on the road, Conner brought the car to an abrupt stop.
“This isn't your house...?” he asked, his brow arching, curiosity laced through his voice. “So…?”
I didn’t answer. I didn’t owe him one right now. My fingers moved to unbuckle the seatbelt, the click echoing in the quiet car. I grabbed the door handle, already halfway out.
But before I could push it open, Conner’s hand shot out and held me back, his fingers curling around my wrist…not tight, but firm enough to make me pause.
"Yo, look... I'm stubborn enough to not let you leave this car if you don't get your shit together," he said.
I froze. His voice was different…firm, commanding, and serious in a way I hadn't heard from him in a long time. Not sarcastic. Not playful. Not half-hearted. It wasn’t just concern anymore; it was something deeper, more intense. And it hit me hard.
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shaky breath. The weight in my chest grew heavier. It wasn’t that I didn’t appreciate him trying... it’s just…I didn’t have the strength to talk, at least not now. I felt drained and hollow. This conversation felt like a weight pressing against my lungs.
"Conner, please... not now..." I whispered, my voice soft and hoarse. I gently tried to pull his hand away, wanting…no, needing…to escape.
But he didn't let go. He pulled me back again, this time with more force, more urgency.
And something inside me snapped.
"Leave me the fuck alone!" I screamed, my voice shaking with raw anger and emotion. The words ripped from my throat like a storm breaking through calm skies. I felt my whole body tense, shivering with rage and exhaustion.
Conner pulled back, stunned for a moment. The shift in my tone must’ve caught him off guard.
But then, as if trying to shake it off, he leaned in again, reaching out once more.
"Leave me... alone..." I muttered sharply, my voice broken but urgent.
And then…..without thinking, purely out of instinct and raw emotion, my hand moved.
Faster than I could stop it.
It landed squarely across Conner’s cheek. A hard, resounding slap.
Time froze.
My eyes widened. My heart stopped.
"Oh my God..." I gasped, my hand still hovering mid-air, trembling.
What had I just done?
