Chapter 49 Chapter 49
Chapter 49 Chapter 49
Elara's POV
“Damn!” Matt cussed, seating on the bottom part of the landing. The look I passed at him was so terrible I knew I needed to fix my face before he realized it.
“We need to move out of here. I'm sick of his chirping.” He rumbled, still rubbing his throat which was so red I feared it might spill blood the redder it becomes.
“So, do you have somewhere in mind?” I drawled, biting back my scalding word.
“Not yet. But once you speak with your brother, and he helps, I'm sure you will be able to come…”
“No!” I exclaimed, baring my teeth in the process.
“Babe–”
“Matt, I'm still fazed by what almost happened hours ago. I still just can't think what would have happened to us if Davis and his man hadn't stopped the vehicles.” I gushed.
“And you don't see the problem in that?” Matt sneered.
“For god's sake, what problem could there be in that?”
“He’s having us monitored, that's what!” Matt drawled.
I paled immediately, not because I hadn't wondered about how much of a coincidence Davis Man happened to be on the scene when our accident almost occurred.
“For all I know, he planned it. To get rid of me faster.” Matt continued.
“Ah. I see, that was why you decided to use me as your shield, uh?”
Matt blanched by my words, and made sputtering sounds a couple of times to redeem his actions.
“No. I panicked, that's all. You know, you were there, sitting on top of me… I hadn't even slipped out of you yet. I just had to hold onto something. And naturally since you were there, I just held on.” He chimed.
“But I could have died!” I yelled, throwing my hands up in exasperation.
I didn't know why I was even having that conversation with this cold blooded fool. I still trembled from shock if I remembered sitting right on top of him, incapacitated, while he was shielded from the impact that would have destroyed my body.
The hospital had helped to calm down the tons of nerves that had piled up as a result of the aftermath of our near death accident.
“So did I, too.” Matt whispered, and I flung him a bone wracking glare.
“Maybe it wouldn't be as brutal as yours would, but I'll be hurt all the same. Imagine the damage it'll do to my mind if you'd…” He trailed off.
From her room, I caught Lena as she kept poking her head out, eavesdropping on us. I pitied the girl. Being exposed to a toxic environment such as this.
“In any case, my family's a bad decision. You'll have to come up with something on your own.” I blurted.
“Well, how the hell am I supposed to come up with the money my creditors are requesting for?” He snapped, and I jumped.
“Sorry.” He murmured.
“Ask your father for help.” I sneered, looking him dead straight in the eyes.
“Don't give me that shit, Elara! He's the last person I would ask to help me.” He announced.
“So do I. My family is the last person I'll bother with my shit.” I spat, climbing back upstairs to my room.
Once locked into my room, I climbed into my bed, already feeling drowsy from the effect of drugs I had been given at the hospital. Hell, the Farestar's Event had carried on through the night, it was no wonder I was fast asleep as soon as my head hit my pillow.
Some noise rustled me from the terrible dream I was having. I steered then blinked multiply to accustom my eyes to where I was. Then I remembered I was in my room, and how I'd gotten there after an argument with Matt.
Brushing my hair back, away from my face, I turned and almost yelped in shock.
“You're awake.” Davis muttered.
“What are you doing here?” I choked.
“Sorry. Didn't mean to wake nor alert you. Just wanted to make sure you're okay.” He murmured.
“You're not my husband.” I spat.
“Exactly. That's why I'm saddled with the responsibility to, as my dimwitted son wouldn't dare to, especially as he's still nursing his bruised ego.” Davis drawled with a smile.
“It's not funny.” I snapped.
“But I'm serious.” He allowed it.
“How did you find out we had an argument?” I questioned.
“The new housekeeper–Lena.”
“Ah. She's quite loquacious ain't she?” I broke in.
“Yeah. And she was the one who informed me you hadn't been done ever since to eat, not drink. And now, it's past dinner time.”
Startled, I sat up in a daze. “How long have I been sleeping for?” I questioned.
“All day?” He drawled, his eyes twinkling in the process. “I brought you something to eat.”
My stomach took that moment to growl out loud, embarrassing me in the process.
“I see.” I whispered.
“Alright, then. I'll leave you to it.” He said and turned on his heels to the door.
Accessing his attire, I realized he wasn't in the clothes he had on earlier when he left the house angrily.
“You're just returning?” I questioned, hoping to get an answer to my whirling mind.
“As a matter of fact, yes. I needed to come pick up some clothes.” He whizzed.
“Ah.” I mumbled, shaking my head at the thought that he probably was staying at Anne's place. Of course, he would have change of clothes there.
As though reading my thoughts, he rasped. “My guest house is at the heart of Paddlefin. It's closer to the office. I'll be there for a while.”
I turned my face to the side, so he wouldn't read the relief his words brought as he stared intently at me.
Hoping to elongate his stay, I said, “Matt?”
His face crumpled in a scowl as his jaws snapped.
“I don't give a fuck about him.” He let out, and turned the lever on the knob, and stepped out as quietly as he had appeared.
