Chapter 156: Care

A few days had passed since the last confrontation between Mayara and Arthur. The tension surrounding them was only increasing, and the disappearance of important figures was leaving everyone on the brink of collapse. With each new piece of news, a new weight fell on Mayara's shoulders, but instead of succumbing to the pressure, she felt a strange strength growing within her.

She was no longer the scared person who hid in the shadows of events. Something inside her was changing. Fear had given way to courage, a flame that grew slowly, fueled by the need to protect those she loved and to confront Santiago once and for all.

The city was on alert. The streets, once bustling, were now quieter, filled with murmurs of uncertainty and suspicious glances. People avoided leaving their homes, fearing who would be the next name on the list of the disappeared. Businesspeople, politicians, and even figures from high society had mysteriously vanished without a trace.

Mayara walked through the streets, her face reflecting the determination that now resided in her heart. She knew she was at the center of it all. She knew that, somehow, Santiago was behind the kidnappings and that time was running out. Every move she made needed to be precise; every decision had to be carefully considered.

She approached the Halley mansion, where the lights were on as always, but the atmosphere was different. The absence of Richard still loomed like a shadow over the house. As she walked through the gates, Mayara took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her grandmother Cassandra's gaze, who watched her from a distance, still resentful.

Deep down, Mayara knew that, despite everything, she would have to face not only Santiago but also the distrust of her own family and those around her.

The time had come to make a decision. Santiago's furious move needed a response of equal measure. She bumped into Countess Anna.

Mayara felt the weight of her father's absence at home. Guilherme was becoming more distant, involved in matters he preferred to keep secret. She knew something was wrong, but he wouldn't give her answers. The house felt empty without his firm presence, and the concern for Celina only worsened the situation.

Celina, on the other hand, was slowly recovering in the hospital. Despite her improvement, something troubled her. Since coming out of the critical state, she had refused to receive visits, even from Mayara. The pain of her sister refusing to see her consumed Mayara inside, but she didn't have time to succumb to those feelings. There was much more at stake.

Stepping out for a walk to clear her mind, Mayara wandered the city streets with her head full of questions and few answers. Each step felt heavier, as if the ground were sinking beneath her feet. She needed air; she needed to think... but her thoughts wouldn't give her peace.

It was in this state of restlessness that she turned a corner and came face to face with Anna.

\- You. - Mayara murmured, feeling a mix of anger and exhaustion stirring in her chest.

Anna stood there, poised, with that same air of superiority, as if she knew something no one else did. Her eyes scanned Mayara from head to toe, full of venom.

\- I didn't expect to see you here, Mayara. - Anna said with a mischievous smile. - By the way, you've been quite busy, haven't you? With Santiago around... you're playing a dangerous game.

Anna's insinuation was enough to make Mayara's skin crawl. She knew Anna was capable of anything, that she was involved in something much larger, but what truly worried her was what Anna knew and how she would use it against her.

\- What do you want? - Mayara asked, trying to stay calm, but her voice came out firmer than she intended.

Anna smiled, as if she were exactly where she wanted to be. She stepped closer, leaning in slightly so only Mayara could hear.

\- I want to see you fall... like the paintings that fell on Arthur. Do you really think you can keep everything under control, Mayara? Sooner or later, someone is going to fall. And guess what? It could be you.

Mayara felt a pang in her stomach, her heart racing faster than she would have liked. Anna was there to provoke her, to test her weaknesses. And in that moment, Mayara knew she needed to be stronger than ever. This situation was too complicated for her.

As she returned home, Guilherme stopped her at the entrance, his face grim.

As Mayara returned home, she barely had time to process the disturbing encounter with Anna when she was stopped at the entrance by her father, Guilherme. He stood there with arms crossed and a somber expression that promised nothing good.

\- We need to talk - Guilherme said in a grave voice, his eyes fixed on Mayara's, conveying a concern she rarely saw.

Mayara paused, feeling the weight of that moment. There were so many questions, so many doubts hanging between them. Guilherme had always been protective, but now he seemed... distant. Something was wrong, something he was hiding.

\- What happened, Dad? - Mayara asked, trying to keep calm, but already feeling a growing tension inside her.

Guilherme took a step forward, uncrossing his arms. His eyes, always so firm, now showed an unusual hesitation. He seemed to be searching for the right words.

\- There's a lot going on, Mayara. Things you don't know and that I couldn't tell you before... - He paused, taking a deep breath. - But I can't hide it anymore. Not when your life is at risk.

Mayara felt a shiver run down her spine. Everything around her seemed to close in. Santiago, Anna, her father... it was as if the world was crumbling, and she was in the middle of it all.

\- What are you talking about? - she asked, forcing herself to face the truth she knew was coming.

\- The disappearances... it's not a coincidence. Santiago... he's behind this, and you've been placed at the center of this game. - Guilherme looked exhausted, his voice heavy with a guilt Mayara couldn't fully comprehend.

She took a deep breath, feeling the shock of his words. She had already suspected that Santiago was involved in something larger, but hearing it from her father made everything more real, more dangerous.

\- I know... - she murmured, looking away for a moment. - And I also know I can't stay out of this.

Guilherme stared at her, shaking his head slowly.

\- No, Mayara. Not this time. I won't let him involve you any further. I need you to stay out of it... at least while I try to resolve things.

Mayara looked him in the eyes, her determination growing.

\- I'm already involved, Dad. There's no turning back.

The silence between them was heavy, filled with unspoken emotions.

Mayara clenched her fists, looking at the ground. That situation caused by Santiago...

The mafia's dealings would weigh heavily on them soon. How would they yield??? She looked at her father without much hesitation.
