Moments of Tension Between Friends
After running, Mayara began to notice something strange in the environment around her. People in the streets were whispering to each other, exchanging worried and alarmed glances. The tension in the air was palpable, as if a shadow of fear had fallen over the city.
As she continued walking, Mayara picked up fragments of conversations that heightened her concern. "They have disappeared... no one knows where they are..." "It all happened so quickly..." The mention of familiar names made her stop abruptly. Political representatives, influential businessmen, and figures from high society had simply vanished. They had been kidnapped.
Richard, who was in an important meeting, was one of the missing. Arthur's father had also disappeared without a trace. The list of names was long and shocking, with powerful and influential people being taken like pieces in a sinister game.
Mayara felt a chill run down her spine. Santiago. He had to be behind this. What was he planning? What was the purpose of kidnapping these people? She knew she needed to act fast, but the weight of the situation made her even more aware of the dangers that were approaching.
Determined, Mayara knew that now more than ever, she needed to find a way to stop Santiago before it was too late. She was in conflict with herself. All of this showed that she should never underestimate the influence of Santiago and Governor Juaréz. He was a severe and unscrupulous man.
Mayara began to run desperately toward her house, her heart racing as she tried to process the latest information. When she reached the door, she barely had time to prepare for what was to come.
As soon as she entered, her grandmother, Cassandra, was waiting for her with a dark and furious look. Before Mayara could say anything, Cassandra raised her hand and slapped her hard across the face. The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the room, and Mayara fell to the floor, holding her face as tears began to stream down.
Guilherme, who was present, quickly intervened, pulling Cassandra away and helping Mayara to her feet.
"What is going on here?" Guilherme asked, holding Mayara gently while casting a disapproving look at Cassandra.
Mayara, with tears in her eyes and her face marked by physical and emotional pain, looked at her grandmother with confusion and sadness. She could barely understand what was happening, but she knew that things were about to get even more complicated. Cassandra pointed her finger at Mayara, her voice heavy with anger and frustration.
"This is your fault! Richard's disappearance... All these problems! You brought this disaster upon our family!" she screamed, the words cutting through Mayara like blades.
Mayara, still feeling the pain from the slap and now being accused of something so terrible, shrank back, trying to hold back the tears that insisted on falling. Guilherme, realizing the seriousness of the situation, tried to intervene once more, placing himself between Cassandra and Mayara.
"Cassandra, stop it! Mayara is not to blame!" Guilherme said firmly, his voice attempting to calm the rising tension.
But before they could continue the discussion, the door of the mansion creaked open with a sinister sound. Everyone turned to see who was entering, and Mayara's heart stopped as she recognized the imposing and cold figure crossing the threshold.
It was Santiago.
His gaze was sharp, a cruel smile drawing itself across his face. He entered the mansion as if he owned the place, his presence making the atmosphere heavy and suffocating.
"How nice to find everyone gathered," Santiago said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "It seems I arrived at quite an opportune moment."
Mayara felt a chill run down her spine, knowing that things had just gotten much more complicated.
Santiago, with a sinister smile on his face, pointed a gun at the Halley family, who were gathered in the living room. The silence in the mansion was deafening, each second felt like an eternity.
"Listen well," he began, his voice cold and calculated. "One of you must participate in my competition. You have three days to choose who it will be. Otherwise, I will make that choice for you... And I guarantee it won't be the most pleasant one."
Mayara felt her heart race. She exchanged a desperate glance with Guilherme, her father. He was pale, his eyes fixed on Santiago, but with a glimmer of determination. Mayara knew what that look meant; he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect the family.
"No!" Mayara exclaimed, almost unaware that she had spoken out loud. "I will participate. I can't let anyone else suffer because of me."
Guilherme shook his head, about to protest, but Santiago merely let out a low laugh, enjoying the scene.
"Oh, Mayara... So brave," he mocked. "But courage won't get you very far in this game. Let's see what you decide." He slowly lowered the gun, but the danger in his gaze remained clear. "Three days. Don't be late."
With that, Santiago turned his back, leaving the mansion as if nothing had happened, leaving behind a trail of fear and uncertainty.
To him, it didn’t matter how; this was much more fun and brilliant.
