Chapter 28: What Essa Knows

Kael’s Pov

"Just say it straight. Whatever it is."

Essa looked at me for a moment across the small table. Then she did.

The Ashborn was not built to dismantle the Noble Houses. It was built to find me. Not to help me. To use me. Grey had known the difference since before I was born and had never once put it on the table between us.

I did not move. Outside the trade district carried on its afternoon business through the thin walls, cart wheels and voices and someone arguing about a delivery two doors down. Normal sounds. Completely indifferent to what was being said in this room.

Essa told me the rest of it. Echo Resonance at full development does not just absorb abilities. It transfers them. Permanently. Takes what was removed from one person and returns it through the carrier. Grey's Resonance was not fraudulently voided. It was taken directly by the man at the center of her wound, using a procedure that required his specific access and his specific power and nobody strong enough to stop him. Eleven years Hollow on paper. Eleven years living inside that specific absence. Eleven years building toward the one moment that could undo it.

The moment she gets it back.

Through me.

I sat with that and let it settle the way you let something settle when you need the full shape of it before you respond to any part of it.

Grey in my chair every evening. Grey watching my face when I reached past three abilities into the vast space beyond them with an expression I catalogued as recalculation. It was not recalculation. It was recognition. The recognition of someone watching a thing they built for eleven years finally becoming what they built it to be.

"My father found out," I said.

Essa nodded slowly. "Four days before the execution. He found a secondary report. Nothing about Ardenmere, nothing about House Maren specifically. Something about Grey and what she needed from an Echo carrier. He filed a counter report and it was buried faster than anything else he ever submitted." She paused. "He was going to reach you directly. They moved before he could."

"So he put it in a letter under a floorboard."

"Yes."

I looked at the table between us.

Do not trust the woman who finds you first.

He was not warning me about her motives. He was warning me about the specific moment when her purpose and mine would need different things from the same situation. The moment when what she needs and what I need cannot both happen at once. He saw that moment coming from four days before his death and he wrote it in the only place he had left to write anything.

"Has that moment arrived," I said.

Essa looked at me steadily across the table. "I think you are already standing in it."

The room was very quiet.

"She genuinely wants to help me."

"Yes."

"And she genuinely needs to use me."

"Yes."

"Both things true at the same time."

Essa placed her hands flat on the table. "That is the most dangerous version of someone in your life. Not an enemy. Not a traitor. Someone who loves what you are and needs what you can do and has been living with those two things as the same thing for so long she genuinely cannot separate them anymore. She cares about you." Her voice was quiet but direct. "I am not telling you she does not. I am telling you that caring about you and needing to use you stopped being different things for her a long time ago. Maybe before you were born."

I stood up.

The room was too small. The thing on the table was too large for the same space as the room and I needed air and the particular kind of thinking that only happens when my feet are moving.

I reached for my coat.

"There is one more thing."

I stopped.

Essa stood too, slowly, like someone careful about how they get to their feet after sitting with something heavy. "The emperor's youngest son has been building his own case against the Noble Houses from inside the palace for two years. Completely separate from Grey and the Ashborn. He knows about you, the Echo program, what Grey built, what she needs from you." She met my eyes across the room. "He thinks if you work together the investigation does not stall. House Maren does not get the thirty days to restructure. The window closes before they can use it."

"How does he know about me."

"He has been watching the academy since your father's execution. He knew your father. Not well. But well enough that what happened to him meant something personally." She held my gaze. "He has been waiting for whoever came after it."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"The note on my table. The imperial stationery."

She said nothing.

"You wrote it."

"I needed you to come alone." Her voice did not apologize. "The only way you come alone is if you think it is already him asking. So I used his initial." A beat. "It is also mine."

I stood in the doorway with my coat in my hand and felt the specific feeling of someone who thought he had been reading a situation carefully and has just found the layers underneath the layers.

"Does he actually want to meet."

"He has been waiting for a reason to contact you since before you walked through the academy gate." Essa crossed her arms. "You are the reason. You have always been the reason."

I looked at the door. Then back at her.

"Tonight. Set it up for tonight."

She nodded once.

I walked out into the street and the city moved around me and I started building the new shape of everything in my head before I reached the end of the block. The shape was larger than it was an hour ago. Larger than anything I had been building toward when I thought this was about five names on a list and a cold thing in my chest and a father I could not save.

Behind me the door closed.

Somewhere ahead a meeting was being arranged.

Somewhere in the academy Grey was sitting in my empty room not knowing that the instrument she built for eleven years just learned what it was built for.

And did not break.

And did not run.

And was already deciding what it would do instead.
