Chapter 144: A Cake for Din
Jessie got up at three in the morning. After she had spoken with Din about letting go of the past and making his birthday special, Din had dozed off while she was holding him. Din had everything, so Jessie thinks that giving him a gift for his birthday won't be particularly special. She knew she had to do something special for him, and the only thing that came to mind was...
Jessie gasped. "Cake!" She screamed and covered her mouth with her hand as soon as she noticed Din had adjusted his body on the bed. This time, she whispered, "Cake."
How will she accomplish getting a cake to him before he wakes up if the bakery won't have opened that early? She placed his hand on the bed after gently removing it from her lap. After getting out of bed, Jessie put on her slippers. She needs to think of another strategy, perhaps baking a cake for him herself.
Jessie, on the other hand, was not a baker. She used to be more of a cook, so she is in need of all the help she can get. As she slithered out of the room, she quietly shut the door after herself. Jessie went down the stairs without trying to rouse anyone, holding her phone in her hand. After all, it was early—3 am. A typical person shouldn't be awake at this hour.
She turned on her phone's touch light as soon as she reached the kitchen door. After locating the switch and turning it on, she shut the door behind her. "Okay. Where do we begin?" Jessie sighed. She placed her phone on the table before going to the cabinet to open it. She should be able to find some flour and baking ingredients in the house since Abby doesn't go to work but instead stays at home. "Where are you?" Jessie used her hand to look for it, but because she was short, she couldn't see what she was actually looking for.
She reached out to grab the stool, moving it closer to the cabinet. After climbing it, Jessie started looking for the flour. She saw a big, transparent container beside another container. She removed the one that is filled with a white substance and placed it on the table. When she opened it, felt what was inside, and realized it was flour, a smile appeared on her face. She just needs to locate the remaining ingredients to make Din a chocolate cake.
She used her phone to look up some information on how to bake a cake. "I have gotten my flour. Remaining ingredients: eggs, sugar, salt, milk, chocolate, and baking soda." She read from her phone and dropped it. As she looked around the kitchen, she put her hands on her hips. Under the sink, she noticed a cabinet. When Jessie got close to it, she knelt down to open it. She opened some other containers when she spotted them.
"Ma'am, do you need something?" She was startled by a voice. As she turned to face the maid she hadn't realized had entered, Jessie's hand left the cabinet and was placed on her chest.
"Mary." She got to her feet. "What are you doing here? It is midnight."
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but I heard a sound and came to check what it was."
With her hand on the nape of her neck, Jessie sighed. "I'm sorry if I woke you up, but I need to look for something, and if I don't get help, I don't think I'll be able to find it anytime soon."
"Ma'am, what are you looking for?" Mary moved closer to her.
"I need some baking tools for..."
"Mr. Cooper's birthday?" Mary immediately responded.
Jessie was taken aback. "You are aware?"
"Yes, ma'am. I have worked for the Cooper family for a long time, so I kind of know these things. Mr. Cooper also decided not to celebrate his birthday last year and every other year because it also happened to be the day of his parents' memorial service."
While holding her hands, Jessie inhaled. "Well, fortunately Din has agreed to celebrate this year, which is why I am looking for baking equipment. To make a chocolate cake for him."
"I had no idea you could bake." She smiled as she spoke.
"Well, I don't." Mary had a questionable face, and Jessie explained, "I'm going to use my phone to look up instructions on how to do it. Use YouTube, perhaps."
"All right, ma'am." Moving to the upper closet, Mary climbed the stool she found there. She took out a few containers that Jessie hadn't noticed before. If Jessie had been patient enough, she would have noticed it, but she wasn't. Mary brought it down and set it on the table. "When Mrs. Abby came into this house, she kept the baking tools in that cupboard." Mary indicated the cabinet from which she had taken those containers.
Jessie approached the table and placed a hand on it. "I must also obtain the ingredients. Eggs and other things." Mary was informed of her needs by Jessie, and the items were then brought out and placed on the table.
"I'll remain here to help you." She offered.
Jessie shook her head. "No. Return to bed. Sleep is necessary so that you can get up early to complete your chores. I'll manage just fine on my own."
"Ma'am, are you sure?"
"Yes. Now go." She swung her arm toward her phone. "It is now 3:45 AM." She grinned as she observed the maid walk around and open the door before leaving.
Jessie browsed the internet for the process, and once she found it, she started combining her flavors. Every time she tried making the paste, they failed to even produce a good cake.
Since it was her third attempt, she became frustrated. "Let's go again." She wiped her sweat off with the back of her hand, washed her hands once more, and then returned to the table to start mixing.
When she finally got the outcome she desired, she grinned heartily. Everything actually worked out well, exactly as she had wanted. It tasted exactly as she had hoped.
