Chapter 42
Dante tightened his grip on his gun as he noticed the unfortunately compromising position everyone was in now. When he lifted his gun to point it at Gregor, the other man pointed his at him.
If Gregor shot Sasha, he would shoot him, and the other man would shoot Dante. In the end, that was the one who would live. What a joke.
"Go ahead," Gregor said, his teeth whitening. "Try something."
Dante was just about to give a sharp retort when Sasha started laughing. "What the fuck?" he said instead.
Even Gregor and his companion had to shoot her a look too. Who the hell would start laughing when they were about to die?
Gregor let out a shout of pain as she hit him hard in the stomach with her elbow and spun round.
Dante smiled slyly, taking advantage of the opening to change course and shoot at Gregor's companion. As though tge man wss expecting it, he stepped to the side. Dante got him on the side of his arm though, and while it hurt, it didn't render him powerless.
Sasha attempted to shoot at Gregor, but she wasn't that lucky a second time. She let out a strangled cry as a bullet from his gun embedded in her leg, and she fell to the floor.
"Are you really going to stay here for her, Dante?" Gregor asked, breathing heavily. His gun was trained on Sasha, but his eyes were on Dante.
He was furious. He had come in here with three reinforcements, and just Dante and Sasha, a woman, had managed to bring them down. This was not the plan.
Another shot rang out, and Sasha screamed. She clutched her chest where Gregor had shot her. Dante gritted his teeth, hating that he could do nothing to bring Gregor down. Damn the man who had his gun on him—if he did anything funny, he would die for it, and all for Sasha.
"Let her go," he growled.
"On one condition, Dante," Gregor smiled wickedly. "You come with me. The master wants to see you."
"Caius is not my master," Dante said slowly so that his words would sink in.
"I'd like to hear you repeat that after you have had an audience with him."
Dante hesitated. Sasha was badly hurt, but she could still live if quick intervention was taken. Was he really going to let her die because she was on a mission for him? So far, she had brought the most important details his way. She was too useful to just discard.
"Go, I'll take care of them," she whispered in pain.
"Take care of who?" Gregor asked, looking down at her. He looked down too late. With a grunt, she drove the fork that she had reached for earlier into Gregor's leg.
Gregor screamed, overwhelmed by the pain. Then everything else happened in a blur.
Dante ran just as Gregor's companion started shooting at him. Gregor was shooting wildly in any direction, blinded by his pain.
However, by some stroke of luck, Dante reached the door, and surprisingly, it was not locked. He pulled it open.
"Dante, you coward, come back!" Gregor shouted just as he stepped through.
He was not a coward if his main aim was to save his life. Sure, Sasha should not be left alone, but she was already almost dead. If he stayed to rescue her, they would end up with two dead people and not just one.
The woman did prove herself useful and noble to the end though, risking herself for him. It was not something he was to forget in a hurry, but right now, he had to move on.
He vaguely remembered her saying that Desmond was supposed to be on his way here. And yet the man was yet to arrive.
He pondered over it as he hurried down the hallway, surprised that no one had heard the commotion going on in that suite. Or maybe they did, and they didn't come up to check.
Could it be that Desmond had led Gregor here? That his supposed alliance was all a trap?
Sasha should never have told him the location of their meeting. It was too easy, too gullible of her.
